maddogmorgan Posted April 3, 2011 Share Posted April 3, 2011 In about two weeks I am riding around Oz on my bike. Leaving Cairns and roughly to Bris-Syd-Mel-Per-Broome-Darwin-Alice Springs-Cairns. This route is highly changeable so am looking for ideas from members...It's a bit of a plane porn trip too... So far I have tee'd up visits to: Jabiru Lightwing Brumby Aircraft and visiting Fighterworld Aviation Museum - Williamstown Any other suggestions as to Aviation museums etc, aviation related spots of interest etc? (Way too high stress job, no holidays for about 5 years) 2. See some of the aircraft I'm interested in building in the flesh 3. Catch up with family in Geelong/Perth/Darwin 4. It has a great selection of old Naval and other aircraft and fascinating exhibits too. Sorry, the link to their website is dead, so no point posting it here. A real lancester is on display with a plethora of other wartime aircraft (Spitfire, Catalina, DC3 & weedhoppers!) and you have a number of RAAF retirees that are willing to show you around and give you info on the history. Guest Maj Millard Posted April 3, 2011 Share Posted April 3, 2011 Hey Bill, I can also recommend the Caloundra air museum for a stop and maybe a sleepover, you'll be surprised what they have there , it's a must see. Howie Hughes used to have a comfortable bunkhouse above the factory. Say hello to Terry the main welder also. He lent me his bike once to go into town a couple of times. If your going to Taree you might also pedal across the W end of the grass strip and visit Pylon 500 and his wife. They have a house and hangar right through the fence next to the airfield. Also the mob of flyers at the casino Aero club should welcome you, as would the fine group at the South Grafton Aero club. One of the times I did it, the bulldust was so bad that I got from Broome to Sandfire exhausted. That was it for the day - about 300k's. My BMW has crossed the Nullabor 19 times. You have to do it once at least. Aviation parallel? I have spent many hours with my arms out wide (throttle lock) going "zoom zoom". Low level flight was easier to get away with in those days. Mad dog, Just happened to do that on a bike in 99 (VN 1500 Nomad) and 2004 (1/2Lap) on a BMWK1100LT, has an awesome time doing it too, went around in 23 days first time boy were there some big days in the saddle 1200kms was the most we did in a day but there were a few 1000k days thrown in. You have yourself a safe and enjoyable ride and watch out for those desert gliders (eagles) the B#$^tards dont like giving up their road kill, i nearly collected 3 on seperate occasions. It's well worth the visit (although my two daughters and my wife thought that 'shopping' was more interesting).
