CAAP92-1 says it all, basically you can land anywhere you think it’s safe.

 

On a side note I follow Trent Palmer on YouTube, he’s into bush flying & a memeber of the flying cowboys, I think in this nanny state we live in if you tried half of what he does the FUN POLICE have a fit, especially if any of you guys with tail wheels water ski on any of our water ways.

Curious... just what are the legalities of landing on a beach? I would love to give it a try but I have no idea what is or is not allowed. I suppose public beaches, state parts and national parks might all be different? And God help us if local councils have a say!

It also depends on the beach, in QLD a lot of the beach’s come under the Parks, Sports and Rec:

Aircraft and recreational craft landings to be authorised Aircraft and recreational craft may only land in:

 

• protected areas (State land) authorised (except on a designated landing area) by a Permit to land aircraft or use recreational craft.

 

• recreation areas authorised (where supported) by way of a written approval from the Chief Executive or the Queensland Recreation Areas Management Board respectively.

 

• State forests and forest reserves authorised (where supported) by way of a permit under the Forestry Act 1959.

 

Aircraft landings – general

 

Due to potential issues and impacts, aircraft landings in QPWS managed areas are discouraged. Only in exceptional circumstances - and only where it is demonstrably in the public interest to do so - will landings be authorised. Landings may however be authorised at existing constructed aircraft landing areas that meet certain statutory requirements and other guidelines (see below) and are subject to appropriate maintenance programs.

The real Police won't have a fit, but may help you to a Court appearance where activities are prohibited on beaches.

 

I had a session with one at Inverloch in Victoria, which didn't start well when my dog attacked his.

Flight this morning from Stephens Creek to White Cliffs for a milkshake and a bucket of hot chips. By 11.00am it was rough as guts up to 7500ft, spew bag on the ready for my young bloke but to his credit he held on. Not a rain cloud in sight. Easy 10 minute stroll into town from the strip and well worth putting on the destination list for a couple of days.

What a sensational day. Got to fly in SA. Couldn't get to fly our filed plan due to a huge cloud base building up over the coast but still a great 1.1h. I highly recommend Cape Town Flight Training Centre.

I rocked up a bit early as traffic can be super thick. When there the lovely owners were sitting down at the table and wanted me just to keep talking as she loves aussie accents. The instructor they got in for me is their advanced training (IFR and Flight test) instructor. We had a quick chat and then he was super happy as he doesn’t normally do trail flights and said since you can fly we would go do this awesome area over to Robben Island and through class C airspace through the Airforce base around Table Mountain and then down nice and low along the coast line around the naval base and back. A check of the notams showed that one area we wanted to visit was active with rocket launches... so we did a bit of a change of planned route and then we filed our flight plan (needed to be 30min before flight minimum), we then went out to do our walk around and inspection. There are special rules for some of the areas (see link) Local PPG around Fisantekraal Airfield and Durbanville area

 

Other than that, the fight plan filing was not too bad, an online system. We called up with mobile on the ground to activate our flight plan and pick up our squawk code.

 

Once out and flying the clouds were building up a lot more than predicted over the coast line, as we had planned to transition though the military airspace at 1500’ but cloud base over the coast was below 800’ and the base was active (we had 2 jets scream past us while we orbited) so they wouldn’t transition us that low. But a great experience, Fisantekraal is an old airforce base so there are multiple runways but it is poorly maintained.

Just back from our country NSW flying trip, day 1 Caboolture-Warwick-Narrabri, day 2 Narrabri-Mudgee, spent 4 days in Mudgee & surrounds, haven’t been there since the early 1980’s, would have to been one of the most beautiful country towns I’ve seen, we stayed at the hangar house which I would describe as 5 star, the host Alex was great, he even drove us into town to pick up our hire car, day 7 Mudgee-Maitland, spent a few days visiting parents at a retirement village, day 10 Maitland-Gunnedah (thanks to the friendly local pilots we meet & who drove us into town for brunch)Narrabri, day 11 Narrabri-Moree-Warwick-Caboolture (moderate turbulence & 15 kt headwinds, a long & uncomfortable day.

 

Was good to spend money in the drought stricken country & supporting the small family run businesses.

Thanks good friend, my wife and I were priviledged to have a relaxing day as passengers on board a R44 for a round trip, Toowoomba, Bribie Island, Caboolture & return. We had two close calls with birds and short final at Caboolture and shortly after takeoff with a hawk/kite. It's hard to believe they actually located the Dump/Land Fill right next to the airfield. It was a nice day for flying with plenty of traffic in the Caloundra, Caboolture and Redcliffe areas with constant radio chatter. Here are a few photos taken today.

An early morning trip

 

Flight home today took me past the Menindee Lake System in Far West NSW. Lake Wetherall (below) part of the Darling River system still with some water.

The village of Sunset Strip on the edge of Lake Menindee have lost their water views with what looks like sand dunes forming on the Lake bed.

Today we finally flew the Darling river between Menindee and Wilcannia today. Have covered it in each direction beyond that but for some reason had never done this short hop. Not much water in it around Wilcannia at the moment, mostly deep holes.

Yesterday I took my first flight in a Cirrus SR20. What an amazing plane, so comfortable and fast. A big change from our little PA28. Apart from the cost, this is something I would love to fly often.

Last flight was a test run over the Laguna Mountains in Southern CA to test a carb issue. RV-3 with 150hp climbs at 1500'fpm from 6500 to 9500'. What a plane.

Why is no-one ever around to see that perfect landing. Had a short local flight over the local recreation dam this arvo, which finished with a straight in greaser. Made the hour or so to get out of the hanger worthwhile.

brinykraut it is mad max country! Mad Max filmed out near Silverton and some awesome trips and adventures still to be had in Far West NSW. Bourke and Wills did part of the Darling river and split their party at Menindee way back in the 1860s. You are right though, much easier to fly over! I learnt to fly Gyrocopters this year so want to fly the length of the Darling then the Murray as one of my first adventures. Planning to do the trip as a small group next year. That should be fun.

I thank you for the background Waraton, afraid most of our understanding of down undah comes from cinema. Pretty clear why the Pommies viewed the continent as an ideal prison at first glance--no worries about escapes!

 

That said, many parallels to U.S. development--British/European colonists=rapid terraformers. Give us a century or two and we'll make anyplace productive.

 

Yeah, we drag the aboriginal inhabitants along against their will, but that seems to be the history of the HUMAN race, dunnit? Steamrolling along towards the future.

 

(BTW, we're currently binging the series 'A place to call home'--enjoyably nostalgic soap opera, does require some idiomatic translations for us, though!

 

Enjoy your 'magic carpet' and the adventure of exploring! Icarus' dream realized, hopefully without the hubris.

 

As mentioned, I always marvel at being able to expand my horizons from above rather than bobbing along on a camel or mule, enduring the horseflies and heat! I'm no T.E. Lawrence, that's certain...

 

As you may know, we have our own version of the Outback--the 'Great Basin', basically between the Cascade/Sierra Nevada range and the Rockies, pretty sparse.

Dingo

Winton

Adels grove

Karumba

Gilberton station

Bowen

Yeppoon

And then home

 

There was some spectacular scenery along the way and some really interesting stops. Winton, Adels grove, Karumba and Gilberton station were amazing
