Hey Guys,

I'm about to continue my flight training as i've been out of it for a long time.

Looking at either Lilydale or Soar at Moorabbin.

Does any one Hire or Train at any of these schools? Would like as much information as possible PM is welcome. Looking for pro's and con's of each Lilydale \ Moorabbin.

Cheers!

I'd suggest you consider Coldstream where the Yarra Flight Training School does both RAAus and GA.

CFI Dick Gower would have to be one of the most experienced instructors in both fields you could find and the club is a very friendly place.

Moorabbin is saddled with higher fixed costs which have to be passed onto students and you can't just go out and do a heap of circuits whenever you want. But both Moorabbin and Essendon are only a short flight away when you want some CTA experience.

Thanks for the info fellas - I'm moving to Melbourne from Canberra next month and currently got the exact same question in my head, although for me it's Coldstream or Lilydale (but might look at Moorabbin)

My two concerns is that I have flown Jabiru's up to this point (Pilots Certificate, no Nav yet ~40 hours) and it looks like the Coldstream school doesn't use them, so I might spend $$'s getting up to speed with a new aircraft. The published rates are a bit different to. The Lilydale seems to be considerably cheaper than Coldstream.

Cheers.

I'd never looked at the aircraft rates at YLIL , pretty reasonable, I've only done endorsements there so the costs were way up there, sounds a lot better dollar for dollar there, do have a fly of a tecnam if you get a chance they're a lovely aircraft

  • 2 months later...

I've been flying with SOAR at Moorabbin for the last six months, I pay $199 p/h dual and $135 solo in a Jab 160D.

I chose to fly at YMMB as I'm only 5 min drive away and the little extra cost is outweighed by the close proximity (no travel time or fuel costs to drive) plus I get invaluable CTA experience ...........and I can squeeze in short notice flights. (I ussually get a call if there are any last minute cancellations)

I'm just waiting on my final RAA Cert test with 35 hours dual and 10 hours solo circ time in the book.

cheers

I'm currently assisting a friend assess local schools as she is about to start learning.

Peninsula Aero Club is also on her shortlist. I see from their website that the average time to pilot certificate is 35 dual and 5 solo hours. I am not familiar with the RAA syllabus however I would've expected some training area solo in that 5 hours.

I don't know the current rates at Lilydale but I do know that their website has not been updated for about 5 years.

You can't fly solo outside of the circuit until the RAA certificate flight test is passed and you need 10 hours solo for a passenger endo, hence I have clocked up 10 hrs solo in the circuit whilst I await my flight test, I can then do my RAA certificate tests and passenger endo at the same time. (Which has been postponed numerous times over the past 6 weeks due to WX or availablity of the CFI)

cheers

Err nope, student pilots can fly solo in the training area to practise things like stalls etc before they do their flight test everywhere else in Australia. Of course Moorabbin may have its own special rules
