New to Melbourne

Recommended Posts

I hold a PC and a PPL with CTA and am about to relocate from country Vic to Melbourne, probably the western suburbs.

Does anybody have any suggestions regarding a facility where I can refresh my controlled airspace procedures, learn how to operate out of Moorabbin (I guess?) and all without being completely looted?

Also, a reasonably close facility with RaAus a/c?

Cheers

Try Lethbridge Airpark both RAA & GA & 1 hour 15mins from CBD, less from western suburbs

As a fellow western suburber it's a bit slim for offerings this side of town. Apart from Moorabbin or Lilydale and Coldstream on the other side of town, you have-

Bacchus Marsh (bit pricey and no RA)

Sunbury/Penfield (RA only)

Ballarat (RA and GA)

Lethbridge (RA and GA)

For polishing up on CTA I find just heading to Essendon or Moorabbin for a couple of hours with the air scanner works a treat.

I certainly agree Lethbridge is an ideal location.

Whilst Skythrills has left Lethbridge due to the principle taking a full time position with RFDS the GA side of things is about to launch in a big way there with a new training group going in today.

Long bitumen runways and smooth grassed runways and well maintained facilities make it an ideal option.

Skythrills owner often returns to run aerobatic or specialist training...080_plane.gif.36548049f8f1bc4c332462aa4f981ffb.gif

Recreational training is also very big there with three aircraft on line and experienced trainers.

Lethbridge is going through a big growth stage with about 16 large hangars going in now. New facilities including up to date fuel systems.

And importantly, Lethbridge has an active, enthusiastic owners club whom are very welcoming. Come down to their midday Saturday BBQ well worth flying in or driving down.

There are also plenty of hangars being built over the next few months, so reasonably priced hangar cost will be available - about $50 to $60 in most now - and may go down as more hangars go up in the next few months.
