G'day fly,

Garmin aviation GPSs usually have two sorts of map software, one is the basemap and the other is the aviation database.

Garmin say that the basemap is specific to the region and cannot be changed - in other words the sketchy map which shows main roads, rivers, lakes, rail lines etc - according to Garmin is burned onto the machine at birth. That means that if you have a northern hemisphere unit you will generally have a northern hemisphere basemap and you can't change it. I think you can however upload things like Ozi Explorer maps.

The aviation database is a different story. Garmin buys its data from Jeppesen and packages it up into updates which are available every 28 days. Go to this page for the download:

http://shop.garmin.com/aviation/databases/

It will cost you about $30 USD and you need to check through the instructions and ensure that you have the right software and hardware to connect the unit to the computer. Do that and actually connect the unit and confirm that the computer can see it before you pay your money.

Regards

Mike
