  1. Thanks Jab7252, I read your “light reading” - and will never approach my Savannah again without my acid-resistant protective gloves! But, seriously, there was obviously something wrong for a Jabiru to spontaneously ignite. In this particular situation, even though the Jabs were used fairly frequently for student training, the standard batteries were often unable to start the engine. Hence the need for leaving them on a charger. Maybe there is a need for some guidance on best battery or best way to maintain adequate charge.
  2. Maybe it is under reported but it is very rare these days to hear about a car or aircraft bursting into flames when it is “switched off”. Obviously a crash is a very different situation but it is hard to see what could cause a fire in a cold, hangared aircraft that has its battery physically isolated - apart from an intrinsic battery malfunction or the effects of an external charging current. Is there any alternative explanation?
  3. This incident could have been so much worse. There were several other aircraft and gliders in the large club hangar which is close to the fuel bowser. Fortunately it happened during the day when people were around and one of the members reacted promptly to save at least two of the aircraft by pulling them out of the hangar. It is not confirmed that it was caused by a charger/battery - but you see a lot of hangars with a cheap solar panel on the roof hooked up to the aircraft as a routine post-flight action.
  4. I know this is an old thread but I am looking to replace the tyres on my SVNH VGXL known as Noddy. I currently have 6 x 6.00 tyres alround but planned to replace with 8.00s all round. I am intrigued that the messages above suggest 8.00 on mains - and 6 on the nose wheel. If I haven’t misunderstood this, surely that tips the nose down and reduces the already limited prop clearance with a 66” Bolly? I assumed it was 8’s all round. Am I wrong?
  5. Not sure where you are, but the easiest way is to have a look at another Savannah and check it out. I am at Gawler in SA if that is any help. I have a plywood template and could mark the supports on it. Otherwise I could make a drawing if you cannot find a Savannah to inspect. John
  6. The silicon tube I found on eBay came at a max length of 1 Metre. If someone can supply in longer lengths in Australia I reckon quite a few of us would be interested. It seems to come in rather jolly colours as well!
  7. Hi Tassie, I am most intrigued about the taildragger idea. There is a school at Aldinga and I wonder how difficult it is to learn. Dr John
  8. Hi all, I am very new to flying - just on my second lesson at Adelaide Soaring Club - but I am fulfilling a long-held ambition at the ripe old age of 66! I am still at the overwhelmed by it all stage but I am assured that it will all start to make sense after a few more sessons. Dr John
