  1. J230 chopper incident last year Wondering if the same thing did happen to a J230 last year at Jamestown, SA. See PPrune thread - Plane crash at Jamestown S.A. The pilot has given a good description of what happened in post 21 which I have copied below. "I have only just completed my RA licence, with a few extra hours due to nav, when I went flying that day. My plan was to do a few landings / touch & go, fly to Booleroo and back. I took off in pretty good conditions with a bit of a cross wind and completed the circt, when I was on final, I had an updraft or two, which is common with a light plane like the Jabi, and I decided that I was to high to land. I applied full throttle, right rudder, lowered the nose but with a stall warning that just kept going. The plane went up like a chopper and it did a 360 degree turn at a hight of about 50feet before it droped the nose straight down. I did not have all day to think about my next move and all I did was pulling the nose up. It came up a second or so, before I hit the grass strip next to the runway ( not on the runway) I know that the guys at the club found a few witnesses who saw the same picture as I have just told. I haven't heard the final outcome of the investigation yet, but they suspect thermal/wirley/windshear. My instructor, who was handling the media and investigators/insurance and a lot more, suggested that we do it again. May-be from a bit higher up, away from the runway! I don't know if any one could learn anything from this, as the final answer is not out yet. I would certainly want to know as well! Regards Lucky P" Frightening. I thought a wirley but are now wondering after reading this thread.
  2. Plane crash at Jamestown S.A. PPrune On the PPrune thread - Plane crash at Jamestown S.A. The pilot has given a good description of what happened. Some interesting discussion on what happened follows. Be interested to hears Guy of the Blueshed's thoughts after they try it again at height. "My instructor, suggested that we do it again. May-be from a bit higher up" Either possibility would certainly be a very frightening experience.
  3. Some may not have seen this video This is the original footage from air traffic controller Personally I'd prefer a bit more safety margin.
  4. Good advice Peter. The answer I got was - Hang gliders are covered as not specifically excluded. Person liability is covered as long as the vehicle is not mechanically powered be it hang glider or paraglider. On a bicycle you are covered for personal liability, on a motorbike you are not. Regardless, even this is just the interpretation of whichever clerk took the phone call. If I was planning a hang gliding holiday I think I would want the answer in writing. Thanks George B
  5. Thanks for the QBE suggestion, had a look & seems to cover partly. You appear to be covered for personal injury and loss but not for liability to others "We will not pay for a liability: (d) arising out of your ownership, possession or use (including as a passenger) of a mechanically propelled vehicle, or any aircraft or watercraft;" Guess this would also include a hire car. It certainly would pay to check the car/boat/aircraft's insurance for liability. Paragliding, parachuting & hot air ballooning are specifically mentioned as OK Hanggliding is not mentioned butI assume OK as not excluded. I assume these are also covered for third partly liability which is good. Commiseration on the floods & your replacement airline ticket costs Phil. George B
  6. Hi, Going on a holiday to NZ and all travel insurance I have looked has amongst the exclusions a clause like this - "A loss that arises from parachuting, sky diving, hang gliding, Paraponting or travel in an air supported device other than as a passenger in a licensed passenger aircraft operated by an airline or charter company. This does not apply to hot air ballooning or parasailing." Has anybody knowledge of a company offering travel insurance which does cover private flying? Thanks in anticipation.
  7. I like to read the Aus non RAAus incidents here and appreciate the effort spent in putting them up. Can I suggest the problem is the descriptions which we could improve Rather than "Investigation underway into fatal plane crash" maybe "ATSB to investigating WA Goldfields Cessna fatal 17/10/07" then those with no interest would not have to go into the thread to see just what it is.
  8. Read an fascinating incident report in the Accidents /Incidents section for the July 2007 Hang Glider Federation Australia Managers Report in Soaring Australia, the joint HGFA/Gliding Federation magazine. See Incident 1 on page 2. http://www.hgfa.asn.au/skysailor/Issues/0706/GM-Report0607.pdf
  9. Contaminated regular unleaded petrol safety warning extended. This diesel contamination problem warning has now been extended to include the whole of Eyre Peninsula, SA. See http://www.caltex.com.au/about_news_detail.asp?id=993 The SA 891 ABC news this morning even included Pt Lincoln airport in the list.
  10. Thanks for the good new Glenns. Any idea why it lost power. Believe A hired Jabiru 160 lost control on takeoff at Murray Bridge yesterday. Left the runway and flipped on reaching ploughed ground. Pilot apparently is also OK but not the plane. Not a very good week in SA for ultralights.
  11. From Adelaide Advertiser 17/05/07 SA. "Two people survived an ultralight crash near the Gawler Soaring Club yesterday. The aircraft crashed on a public service road adjacent Two Wells Rd, which is next to the club's runway just after 3pm. A police spokesman said a male and female were on board the plane and were taken to hospital for precautionary checks?." Hope they are OK.
