Is there a decent set of landing lights with wig-wag for Jabirus

JWWI bought a solid state and adjustable wig-wag system from Claus who makes the PowerMate voltage regulators.

 

The Wig-Wag unit and the PowerMate both worked great & without issue.

I went back and searched the build log in J230 @ YSWG, but while I mentioned it, it looks like I didn't include a photo.

The unit is about 1.5 times the size of a matchbox, if I remember correctly.

I suggest that you give Claus @ Powermate a call and he should be able to send you something, as I always found him very helpful.

Took off from YMOR last year at dawn, first time that I have seen any usefull need to use, it certainly iluminated the runway.

I always have on when touring, but have yet to hear that I am identified by these.

Strobe lights are more noticible, especially from above.

Finals would be of some comfort though.

I have factory installed light on left strut. Can't, and won't change.

The Powerburst lights don't have or need a control box. They are fully self contained.

Prices for true aviation strobes and nav lights are a little excessive methinks

Crickey, this thread died out years ago! Does that mean nobody needs wig wags?

Despite all efforts to make my plane visible, I've had a few close encounters of the "I didn't see you" kind.

Nothing beats a pair of bright wig wags mounted on the outer wing leading edges. I know one that was seen from 20 miles out by ATC. I bought the Crazy Pilot set but they're crap- only visible at dusk.

Does anyone know where I can get a properly bright setup, but not at aircraft prices?

Get some reasonable priced led s off ebay and use the wig wag system electronics from a guy in NZ i will see if i can find his site and pass it on to you

Got a couple of 25 watt LED small spotties wired up inside the cockpit to a flasher/indicator unit.

A 3 way toggle switch allows on/off/flash.

Need to be careful your electrical system can provide the power.

I can confirm it is bloody bright. Blinding if you're standing in front of them.

I am with Downunder, the eBay style lights can be excellent value and bloody bright.

I have used them with motorbikes and can attest to the great light at low wattage. You can get spit and flood variety's and combo versions.

Nothing needs great lights like a fast motorbike, I bet my life on em.

I have used slimline ones that are flood and spot combo 5 inch long. Alloy body for heat removal and waterproof. Could smash it with a hammer and would still work perfectly. And dirt cheap, enough to buy lots of different ones to get a perfect system.

Wing tip lights are another matter but are sortable.

A good system can be had for landing lights that will illuminate hundreds of metres ahead, use very little power and not cost a bomb.

I would not worry too much about battery drain if the landers are only used for landing periods. A small extra battery could always be carried to cover the extra load for the loads if running long periods. A small SLA battery will run a set for a long time.

Whilst the Aveo lights look nice at that price, I wonder if a better and far cheaper one could be made and possibly marketed?

Would we happily pay $300 for a better one or is the market small and just after a big name?

For that matter a good landing light setup?

I doubt that'll be a problem, LS. I have a Lithium battery which doesn't like overcharging, so I'm trying to find uses for the 20 amps put out by my alternator. At present I have Kuntzelman wingtip strobes (2A) a pair of LED kitchen down lights (c.15A) for landing and my radio, iPad and GoPro (c.3A).

I guess there's enough left over for a couple of powerful LED wig wags.

Sparksfly from nz sell a control unit i have purchased 1 approx 75 aus dollars to use for my build and a housing from jaycar about 7 bucks works a treat for covering the module

Some lights are all bright and no Penetration. Hence the need to carefully evaluate the lights you get. As they are very cheap this allows some experiments.

A trick motorbikes do is the addition of a bright blue led, it can gain attention and has proven value. Can be strobed or just on. It provides a clear distinction and car traffic takes notice when otherwise they claim to not have seen you. This could be a solution.

I am not talking about just using a bluish white light but a separate blue bright Led.

Yes it is legal, just do not add a red one as well. The cops use these colours for the attention they grab.

Also the power (wattage) plays an important role. You can only go so far with efficiency. Serious light output requires serious energy input. Not much different to fuel in an engine. If you want bigger power, with a bigger engine, ultimately you need to feed more fuel.

Best to determine your allotted power quota to the lighting system first and make sure your system can keep up. More power is larger, heavier wiring too.

I keep my lights flashing 100% of the time.

I don't see the point of not keeping them on.

A light not on is good for nothing...
