I might be looking for a helpful person who might accidentally fly over the border, land and ask for directions and being aviation safety conscious I would have to hop in and fly with you for precise directions to Queensland...it is very dangerous for a pilot to get lost

So this is how to leave the Socialist Republic of Victoria - it will cost any of you Mexican refugees without wings plenty of $$$$$$ - Upon cash being delivered I will put a X on the map and send it to you with a time to pick up. Who said people smugglers in Australia cant beat the system.

Another example of how to make money with RAA aircraft.

Several weeks ago, I flew over the border both ways and saw exactly no missiles. This time, with no plane, we came back early to miss the rush. This was from the West Wimmera, a covid-free place. Less covid there than in SA for sure.

Personally, I hate the idea of using the army to police civilians. One army guy I once knew was quite crazy. I thought there was something in the constitution banning the use of military against civilians. If not, there should be. ( That army guy is now on veteran's benefits for being crazy... somehow he managed to convince them that he got that way in the army )

His name wasn't Corporal Klinger was it?

Klinger was way more sane, and they were correct to ignore his drag outfits. This guy was crazy before he joined up. I imagine his recruitment was like in the Alice's Restaurant song. ( where both the recruit and the recruiting officer-psychiatrist finish jumping up and down together )

You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant - exceptin' Alice.

NO wonder Ian is looking for lost aviators to guide to the Sunshine Coast. Ian booked on Jetstar and his scheduled flight was cancelled.

Jokes aside, can anyone point me to any guidance material regarding what specific limitations currently exist for a Melbourne based flyer. The 'four reasons to leave home' rule is probably the biggest hurdle, although based on other allowable recreational activities, it is not exactly clear. I'm guessing that a recreational flight that takes you beyond the metropolitan lockdown zone is not acceptable.

Any thoughts, preferably backed by government guidance material or specific rules are welcome...

If I look at it in simplistic terms there are only 4 reasons you can leave home and flying doesnt fit into one of them so even though there is nothing explicit that is the way I would look at it

There are truisms and axioms and cliches. The inclusion of the words "currently existing" make that a Trumpism.

According to the Victoria Government

Can I get out of the house and just go for a drive?

Yes, however this can only be undertaken within metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire, and should not involve leaving your vehicle for any purpose except for the four reasons (shopping for necessary goods or services, care, caregiving or compassionate reasons, exercise, and work or study).

According to that, you could do a flight like this.

You could even get up to Seymour. You can take a person who lives with you.

The airspace is not closed. If you have current M/R in force then your A/C needs to be kept airworthy which would mean the engine is to be kept in serviceable condition, IE operated. I flew right thru the last debacle! Stay within the state of Victoria (the leper colony). If stores like Bunnings and other non essential retail stores are allowed open then the 4 reasons to leave home are a joke! You can now play golf, fish etc, the fools this time realised that some activities are extreme low risk!

It couldn’t be clearer, so let’s cut the BS flying is not allowed. Some clever people thought they’d push the meals boundary and were fined $25,000. We’re in the position we are because people pushed the boundaries.

The government is under fire for being overly harsh on some of the lowest income segments of the community with the strict public housing towers lockdown.

One way to deflect that would be to implement restrictions on (perceived) high income people e.g. pilots. If people keep pushing the boundaries, they are likely to ground private and recreational pilots - and we would get no sympathy from the public. It has happened in other countries. If we were grounded, it might not be lifted for 12 months or more.

Please follow the rules, and do not draw undue attention to us!

That logic would justify paying a commercial pilot to fly your aircraft (i.e. work). It does not mean you can fly it yourself.

As long as you don't need to get out of the aircraft away from home, i.e. it would probably work for Lindsey Fox or anyone else with an airstrip at home, but if you need to go to a public airport, no go.

Firstly, just so you know, the word Mexicans is highly offensive to Victorian

Secondly, you must have been asleep during the first lockdown when thousands of illegal flights took place. One South Australian Flying School continued flying shoulder to shoulder in contingents of 8 aircraft out of Adelaide. I saw at least 40 border crossings between Victoria and South Australia on weekends when now and again I had a look.

The first PA 28 has just flown out of Moorabbin and out of the Metro area.

Tens of thousands of us in Melbourne have been affected in our businesses, with hundreds probably having to go out of business and hundreds about to lose their homes, not becaise of anything they did but because of the massive community spread from the CBD up north as far as Seymour, and right through the western suburbs. Inevitably people legitimately going to work across town, and transport companies legitimately distributing necessities are going to spread the infection to the other half of Melbourne before it is shut down.

We are under the control of the Chief Health Officer, not Dan

You can leave home to go shopping. So go to Woolies and buy a loaf of bread and dozen eggs. What you do after shopping is irrelevant - you left home to go shopping and you went shopping.

That being said, you are permitted (under the Stat At Home (Restricted Areas) directions) to leave home to attend a lesson to operate a vehicle or to practice for the purpose of obtaining a licence to operate a vehicle. Chapter 10(h).

Vehicle is defined as the definition contained inthe Public Health & Wellbeing act -which happily defines it as " vehicle means any means of transport, whether self-propelled or not, and whether used on land or sea or in the air.".

Chapter 1(B) of the Stay at Home directions says you must not leave the restricted area except as allowed under Clause 6,7,8,9 or 10 - with 10 allowing the operating a vehicle exemption. So yes, you can still go flying if you're putting in practice to obtain a licence - even if you need to leave your locked-down post-code to do it. Maybe organise a BFR at Mangalore if you really want to get the police excitable??

So go flying to practice for your PPL, or your RPL, or something else and tell the rozzers to sod off - even if you haven't bought that loaf of bread first!

The original post was obviously tongue in cheek, not so much some of the replies I think.

If you ask me the government has been way too soft. I have been following what is happening in other countries, and there is no reason it won't happen here too. We need to decide, do we want to be in the same position as New Zealand, or the same as the USA or UK?

They are running out of storage space for bodies in Texas, and bringing in refrigerated trailers.

Many people who survive the disease end up with lung damage, kidney damage, strokes, blood clotting disorders, brain damage. People who ran 1/2 marathons still can't climb a flight of stairs 3 months later. They have recently discovered that x-rays of children who they thought had asymptomatic, mild disease shows lung damage. If we let it run 90% of people are likely to get it eventually.

We need to take this more seriously and do whatever it takes to turn things around. Australia should be aiming to look like New Zealand.
