  1. Lookup the local Aussie company Flyleds at Flyleds – Lighting kits for Van's RV aircraft I experimented with off-road LED lights and they produced intolerable radio/intercom interference. I fitted these to my Arion Lightning for a fraction of the cost of what you see coming out of the US (see attached pic). Wigwag option is available too, with about 8 patterns to choose from.
  2. I installed a $15 automotive horn a couple of years ago (see it arrowed on photo attached) for the purpose of warning people on the ground if I found myself in a similar situation. Not long prior to doing this there had been an RV landing on a beach that hit someone and another aircraft trying to put down on a ski field that killed a woman - both incidents occurred in Europe. At the time there was a lot of bad press about the Jabiru engine, which I have a 3300A in my Arion Lightning. I also use it at the "clear prop" stage on engine start-up. It certainly gets people's attention, as is the intent. Whether it is effective in warning people on the ground of my presence 100~200m away I have no idea. It is mounted within the engine bay and is pointed toward the cooling air discharge opening in the bottom of the cowling.
  3. Did you go ahead with the EFI modification? If so, any feedback on how it has preformed? I have a 3300 powered Arion Lightning and have been considering with the EFI idea for some time.
  4. Just in case someone is tallying up the yeas and nays I vote for expanding the RAAus / CASA requirements for mandatory radio usage to all flight groups and all locations - fixed wing, rotary wind, floppy wing, unlicensed strips, farm paddocks, the lot.
  5. The Tru Trak Digiflight II autopilot that's installed in an Arion Lightning operates fine in its lateral and vertical (Alt Hold) functions but when the GPS commands the autopilot to turn to a new heading at a waypoint, even if only a few degrees, the pitch servo starts to put the aircraft into a dive. I have to pull back on the stick, against the servo, to keep the nose at the correct pitch. Once it is back on an even keel I release the stick and the Alt Hold performs fine. Any ideas what may be causing this?
  6. As rgmwa says, SkyShop no longer sell them but Rod suggested contacting London Fire and Safe at Bowen Hills, Brisbane. I Looked up their website http://www.londonfireandsafe.com.au/ and they sell Halotron extinguishers, Halotron being a replacement extinguishing agent for Halon 1211. However, according to Wiki, it takes a larger volume of Halotron to get the same fire suppression ratings as Halon 1211. How much more I don't know.
  7. Just got back from my (hopefully) second-to-last navex. I opened up the e-mail to find Ian giving me a gentle reminder to log on to Recreational Flying and introduce myself. I've been learning to fly at Rod Tyson's Free Flying school at Redcliffe (Brisbane) on and off, mainly off, over the last 18 months. Problem was I did an initial intensive 9 days to get solo but then had to go back to Roxby Downs (north of Woomera) for another 12 months before I could get back to Redcliffe and pick up where I left off. I relocated back to Bris Vegas in February and now I'm starting to get a few hours done on the x-country endorsement. One more longish navex in the next week or two and I should be done - apart from sitting the Human Factors exam. I've done all my time on a FlySynthsis Texan. Very pleasant to fly - it flatters my abilities.
