  1. I have received my Skyecho2 and have the required hex code. I believe I have configured it correctly through the wifi connection and browser. Unfortunately AvPlan is refusing to connect. Also the Skyecho2 is not transmitting- the middle green light flashes slowly. Can anyone tell from my description what I might have missed? Laurie

Then there was the writeup in Ed 99 about the ASIC too, but failed to mention that so long as you avoid the traffic period for an RPT airport, you don't need an ASIC. If you can't do that, you get the ARO to escort you, or simply feign ignorance.

One thing military life taught me is It is better to ask forgiveness than for permission...

I'd be interested to know how many weekend warriors have flown into an RPT airport and actually been asked to display their ASIC.

Only Kalgoorlie (by a grounds person who didn't even know what an AVID was) and Merimbula where they have a vested interest. They serve absolutely no purpose apart from keeping a few more pen pushers in a job.

  3. Victoria gave away car registration labels years ago.  It is quite risky 'running the gauntlet' because many highway patrol cars are fitted with ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) which alerts the persons in blue in real time of expired registration, disqualified drivers, outstanding warrants etc.

Also, SAFA (HGFA) have stopped producing annual registration cards for their aircraft (trikes) and have come up with a sticker with a QR code which if scanned reveals the registration status.

It's possible that a slight change in output makes the flame pattern in the port slightly different. Next time it happens move the throttle a bit and see if any change.. Nev

Thanks FH.  I adjusted the throttle, applied carb heat, fuel pump on, confirmed mixture rich and after a minute or so the EGT returned to its normal level.  Laurie

Yep, I would suspect the sender first. An electrical connection sure could do that.

I have EGT on all 4 cylinders of my SK jabiru, and I don't use it much now that the 4 cylinders have been equalized. I was surprised how different the cylinders were to start.

I don't see much use in the EGT figures except to show if the cylinders are the same like you want them to be.

Remember you are just reading the average temperature of a probe, and this probe gets a blast of hot gas for 45 degrees in every 720 degrees. Apparently the "real" combustion temp is about 2000 degrees C. So the difference in 700 to 740 is not that much. Did the CHT show a change?

Thanks Bruce.  There was no change in the CHT, RPM or fuel flow.  Laurie

  6. I built (ish) a Jabiru UL 450 and now have 260 hours on both airframe and 2200 Jabiru engine.

CHT and EGT are only monitored (at this stage) on two cylinders -  no 3 for EGT and no 4 for CHT.

Today I was out jollying around for about an hour.  Cruising steadily at 2800 rpm, around 13 litres per hour and EGT on 700 deg C.  Suddenly I notice the EGT quickly rising to about 740.  There was no change in RPM, fuel flow was steady, CHT steady (around 105 indicated), oil temp 90 and pressure steady.  This has happened before, months ago and I have check the induction manifold and tubes, all secure. If there was a problem there I would think it would be more consistent than this apparent spurious reading.

Is it possible that a dodgy electrical connection could cause this?  The gauge is a standard VDO display and the sender a K type screw in type.

  7. Your fabric must be in excellent condition to handle 1380 grams @ .9mm then 🙂

I wouldn't have thought Thruster fabric would be as heavy as the top surface of a trick wing.

  8. I have had Lightspeed Zulu 1 for a long time.  The control unit went all sticky and the noise cancelling was playing up.  I sent them to the Lightspeed repairer here in Australia and they came back like new. $300 well spent.

Aside from that I fell victim to a mongrel from NT who advertised a late model Bose set that appeared in perfect condition but as it turns out has a dickie mic plug (the end pin feels loose) and they don't seem to work.  The noise cancellng is fine but no audio send from the mic.

Can anyone advise an authorized BOSE headset repairer in Australia?

I haven't heard of too any thrusters coming apart in the air. Nev

There was one in Victoria a few years ago and resulted in an AD for the stainless steel strut to spar plates.  Andrew Richards and a student from memory.

  10. I used Stewart Systems water born 2 pack paint on my Jabiru. Watched all the videos and read all the Stewart Systems instructions. I made a temporary spray booth in my shed with filtered air extraction system and a heater to maintain the required temperature. I found one compressor insufficient for the HVLP gun and ended up running two in tandem. I liked the idea of using distilled water as a thinner rather than poisonous thinners. I'm definitely an amateur when it comes to painting but the results were pretty good.  Laurie
