  1. We use summer oil for our smokers in the ag planes. Should be able to get it from any farm supply store.
  2. I spend most days flying around well under 50 ft spraying crops. As an ag pilot we do not (well not ment to) go below 500ft unless we have a reason to be there aka spraying. And when we do it is not just a case of getting down low and doing it we actually plan every job and and research all known obstacles befor getting into the aircraft ant then do a thorough survey of the work area from a safe height befor going down to spray heights. Down low is not a place to be for a novice. However there are times when it may be nessasary to get low and for that reason LL training should be part of training but is not a license to get below 500ft for he thrill of it. A mate of mine was forced to ditch after getting caught below a low cloud base resulting in the loss of the ac and worse his pax he was lucky to live. The other thing to consider is public scrutiny the other day I was at the beach and watched one of the local guys buzzing up the beach at 100ft. It only takes one person to complain to cause many headaches for everyone else. I would be a bit cautious as to the ability and experience of may instructors to be able to teach LL. Bottom line do the training as part of awareness it may save your bacon one day but stay safe and keep at a safe height.

  4. Is a major problem to me working off farm ag strips. Have hit a few luckily no damage to plane roo was not so lucky hitting him with landing gear. Best way to try keep them at bay is to keep the grass mowed. A blip on the throttle usually sends them hopping as well

Can remember my first flying lesson 20 odd yrs ago one of the first things my instructor told me (started in choppers) "f$&k the chopper it's insured do whatever you can to make sure you walk away" bloke made his decision to pull the BRS and turned out to be the right one. 10 points to the pilot for good out come by using all available resources.

  9. Yeah they do give you a bit of a wake up call. They are pretty aware of you and are good at getting out of the way at the last min. I fly ag and have to deal with close encounters of birds on a daily basis when spraying. Watch out for ducks they are incredibly stupid and won't get out of the way.
  10. There is an old saying if it flys floats or f$?ks rent it. Having said that go with what you really will use and get most enjoyment from. Fast is not always the most fulfilling, I'm a full time commercial pilot but instead of wanting to fly faster I dream of going slow and spitting out bugs in my teeth.

My two cents worth. 50hr in the big picture is nothing for someone with experience however that extra 50 hrs for someone with a freshly printed cpl license could be the difference of getting your first job or not. Having spent x amont on 150 hrs and being unemployed is more expensive than spending an extra hand full of cash on 50 hrs and being employable. The only way it makes sence doing the 150 hr course is if you intend on doing extra traing straight after your cpl and getting IR rating or instructors in which case you would be doing those extra 50 hrs anyway. In summary do the 200 if you don't want to do instructors or IR straight away and just want to get straight into flying charter do 150 if planning on doing extra ratings. As for VET FEE help the concept is ok but the flying schools offering the courses are ripping off the system. 24k for an IR rating is just proferteering and preying on those who don't know any better. A golden rule in aviation NEVER pay a lump sum up front. Don't stress too much about doing theory at flying schools in my experience I had better results self studying but you have to be focused and disiplined it is very easy to get distracted .

  13. G'day all this is my first post here. I was hoping I may be able to get a little guidance. I am currently a 2000 hr CPL and would love to instruct and maybe one day have my own flying school. There is a RAA/GA flying school on the airfield where I am based where I could do my Instructors and supervision however they only use the likes of Jabirus but I am more interested in the lighter slower open cockpit machines Bantams, X Airs, etc. So question is how do I go about doing this can I just do my instructors on the Jabirus and then just get an endorsement on the lighter machines or are they all pretty much classed as the same thing or do I need to do a compleatley different instructor rating on the lower performance aircraft? Could I transfer an RAA instructor rating over to GA? I am also interested at a later stage in Trikes how would this fit in with a RAA instructor licence? Cheers for any help.
