  1. Background: This trip was originally booked when I found a cheap sale fare to Melbourne with Qantas, this would allow me to ride a 767 out of Canberra. From Melbourne I looked at a few options one of them was to head up to Brisbane stay two nights and do QF8 (747) back to Sydney, but I eventually settled on keeping it as a day trip with the final routing of CBR-MEL-SYD-CBR, giving me one new type the Airbus A330-200 as well as the opportunity to re-visit my favorite 767 and my old foe the 737-400. All up the fare were pretty cheap although I booked the flight from SYD-CBR using my frequent flyer points. July 11, 2011 As my flight didn't leave until 0910 I was able to sleep in a bit more than the usual 4am wake up. I woke up to find a text message telling me that my Jetstar flight had been delayed from 1415 till 1535. Eventually left the house at 0745 which is cutting it a bit fine for my liking but I arrived at the airport at 0810 with plenty of time. Check-in today had to be done at the desk as I was supposed to have an exit row, however when they tried to check me in the machine spat out a boarding pass with 8A on it. It turns out that my flight had been downgraded from a 763, to a 737-800. As 8B was taken and I had someone with me I moved to 28A before proceeding through security and down to gate 13 to find my aircraft unloading after arrival from Melbourne. CBR-MEL Flight: QF811 Aircraft Type: 737-838 Rego: VH-VZA Name: Port Augusta STD: 0910 Off Blocks: 0909 Rotate: 0918 Gate: 13 STD: 1015 Touchdown: 1015 At Gate: 1020 1st Time on VH-VZA 22nd 737 flight 8th 737-800 Flight 59th Flight Overall VZA getting prepped for our departure. FIDS Boarding for the flight was delayed slightly and all passenger who had checked in online the night before were asked to go to the service desk to collect a new boarding pass. Boarding via the glass aerobridge. Legroom shot from 28A, adequate for a short flight. 28C was free so we had a seat between us. Qantaslink's newest VH-LQB Once fully boarded there was a short wait for LQB to push back. Load today was about 75%. Pushing back from gate 13 Safety demo was the usual, we taxied right down to the end of runway 35 for our departure and used the extension, we were pretty much rotating by the time we were at the Piano keys where the old runway used to end which I though was pretty funny, the full length was certainly not needed. Climb out today was smooth over Canberra's north before turning to the left and flying back past the airport, not much turbulence at all which was un-expected after the weather of the previous day. Turning to the north. Black Mountain tower. Shortly after takeoff we were served a light snack, today a Byron Bay cookie. Followed by a full drinks service today I chose to get a lemonade. Snow dusted Brindibellas Lots of snow Wow. As can be seen our flight path took us over the snow capped mountains which was amazing, however clouds hindered this view as the snack was served. Byron Bay Cookie Decent into Melbourne was once again rather un-eventful despite the in increment weather. A few bumps here and there but that's about it. Landing was into a slight crosswind and that was easily over come with a very skilled landing. Just after descending through the clouds. On final approach with flaps. Getting the wobbles close to the ground. down. spot the special livery Singapore Airlines A380 9V-SKG. United jumbo and Vietnam A330 Taxiing behind SKG VH-OQD Emerites having some work done. Parking next to VH-ZXA Once at the gate we asked for a flight deck visit and were given permission Flight deck of VH-VZA, we were however rushed out by the CSM as the turnaround was quite tight. Melbourne Airport With four hours turning to five we were in no rush to do much at Melbourne, we looked around T1 before checking in at T2 and then heading over to a quiet corner of T3 where we could watch the planes. Eventually we decided that it was time to go through Customs and over to our gate. International Departures Jetstar desks from T3, it's the white E190 VH-ZPR Customs was relativity easy to get through as we were able to use the domestic express lane. Once though all this we went over to our gate to find no aircraft, so we went to look around the terminal. Up close with VH-OQD Two of many vehicles assisting in it's preparation for QF009 to Singapore and London. From the side Two part rudder, never seen this before. Malaysian and China Southern getting prepped for departure Singapore 777 getting prepped New part of Melbourne's terminal. FIDS Hey look, it's our plane...oh wait it's going to the domestic terminal. The terminal itself was clean however it was rather hot and lacked ventilation making the wait rather uncomfortable. What was a problem was the lack of communication from the Jetstar ground crew about the delay. For this flight we were lucky enough to be assigned over wing exits back in row 44. My colorful boarding pass. Hey look it's finally here, and it's Jetstar's newest A330 featuring seat back AVOD Gate 5 occupied at last. The aircraft was prepared and finally about 5 minutes before we were due into Sydney boarding commenced. Straight down to row 44 to find a huge amount of leg room. The flight was pretty full in the rear section of economy, not sure about the front though. Only a small amount of space to stretch out in! Nice clean wing on this four month old aircraft. About 20 minutes after boarding the main door was closed and push back commenced, a recorded safety demonstration was shown the crew doing all the usual actions. Not sure if the screens were used in the demo as mine was tucked away in my arm rest. Takeoff was very smooth, the A330 produces plenty of power making for a quick climb up to 39000 feat. After some exploration of the AVOD system I put it on to airshow and tracked our progress until it had to be stowed back in my armrest. The usual Jetstar BoB menu was offered, I got Cheese and Biscuits and a Lemonade. My snack AVOD, Hook, Line and Sinker was one of the shows offered for free. Cruising over thick cloud. Decent today was pretty quick and very smooth, making approach for 34L On decent. On downwind turning base for YSSY A little bit of speed brake as we head out over the coast Turning final On final approach with sun setting in the background. Over the runway Down Taxi in VH-OJS Landing was smooth and taxi in was quick, we were able to get through customs, etc relativity quick once again due to the express lane. we then headed into the City for a short time before heading back to the terminal for our flight back to Canberra. Very quickly made our way through security to find TJH at our gate managing to score ourselves exit rows upon request at the service desk. Boarding was a few minutes early and I took up my assigned seat in 12C. Just before departure I was asked to move to 12D so there was two people in each exit row. Push back was close to time and we were taxiing in no time on our way to runway 16L. A powerful takeoff ensued with a quick climb. At the top of the climb the cabin crew served Caramelized Onion Crackers with antipasto dip which was delicious! Decent commenced and we were soon touching down on runway 35 in Canberra disembarking the aircraft via the stairs at gate 14. At Sydney Before departure Disembarking the fron stairs Returning to the terminal Conclusion It was disappointing not to get a 767 so I will have to take that the opportunity another time. It was a shame Jetstar was late but that can't be helped. The ground crew spoiled the experience with their lack of communication spoiled it as the on board product was really good, I would have no hesitation in doing long haul with them. The 737-400, well it's certainly getting on in age and the interior really shows this, the sooner they retire the better!
  2. The cricket was really good, the GABBA is a great venue, and the seat I had provided views of approaching aircraft when nothing was happening in the cricket. Qantas is certainly still the way to go!
  3. Introduction: After contemplating which cricket game I wanted to go and see this year I eventually decided on going to a match in Brisbane on January 30. I booked flights with Qantas through Sydney and accommodation was organised with my friend and I staying at my aunts house. On this trip I would travel on my two favorite aircraft, the Boeing 767 and the Dash 8-Q400 as well as travelling on the one aircraft I hate, the Boeing 737-400. 27/01/2011 For once I wasn't on an early flight so I had a decent (what you call decent on a 25 degree night) sleep. My grandpa drove us to the airport arriving just on 8am, with no line up for check in we checked our bags in and were off to security within a few minutes. Problems occurred at security when a random explosives test on myself gave a false reading stating that I had traces of explosives. after a few more attempts I was cleared and took a seat next to departure gate 13. VH-QOM arrving at the gate. Boarding was called early and I was th first onto the aircraft greeted by our CSM for today Denise who directed us to the very rear of the aircraft. After about 10 minutes it was announced that we were now fully boarded and were awaiting the final paperwork before we could get going. In the cockpit today we had John and John whose last name escape me. Engines started at 0950 and pushback commenced shortly after. At about 0954 the flaps were set and we made the 10m taxi from the terminal to the runway entrance most Q400s use at Canberra. After holding short for a Virgin Blue 737 the spoilers were raised (no idea why this is done with the Q400s) and we taxied on to the runway before the captain powered up and lowered the spoilers, we rotated with about 1/3 of the runway left. A bit of turbulence was experienced on takeoff but soon we were settled into quite a smooth climb to our cruise at 16000ft. The captain spoke for a bit briefing us on the flight and weather conditions and soon after crossing 10000ft the seatbelt sign was extinguished. The two cabin crew Denise (previously mentioned) and Luigi made quick work handing out cup cakes and drinks. Today we had a Orange and Caramel Cupcake as well as a choice of tea, coffee, juice or water. Today I opted for coffee to accompany my cupcake. The Orange and Caramel Cupcake served, quite tasty although quite small. After the quick run through the cabin with the refreshment the crew then got to work with rubish run as we commenced our decent into Sydney. Today we would be arriving on runway 16R. My attempt at a legroom shot, plenty of legroom on the Q400s! Approach was a little bumpy but nothing to bad, if my camera wasn't in the over head it would have been a great approach for pictures with an approach right next to the Sydney CBD, landing was certainly nothing special but compared to what I have experienced in the past it was nothing. We exited onto the cross runway and arrived at the gate a few minutes later with the engines shut down we were cleared to get off. VH-OGS is seen taxiing past as we make out was to the terminal, I had been informed that this aircraft would be operating my next flight. Sydney Airport: With just over an hour and a half between flights I headed off to get some lunch before sitting at the gate to await the flight, my advice to anyone travelling through T3 at Sydney would be to avoid eating at Hungry Jacks, they are pretty bad there. QF524: Aircraft: VH-OGS Boeing 767-338 Name: Roma Seat: 53A STD: 1205 STA: 1335 (1235 BNE time) Pushback: 1204 Wheels Up: 1216 Wheels Down: 1322 At Gate: 1324 Departure Gate: 13 Arrival Gate: 22 Stats: -First time on aircraft -3rd time on type -55th Flight Roma at the gate just prior to boarding. VH-OGS is one of the internationally configured Boeing 767s in the Qantas fleet, featuring a rather aged interior, the interior in this aircraft seems to be in better condition seems to in a much better condition than that of VH-OGM (the other International config 767 I have been on). Boarding was called on time and I took up my seat in row 53, the last row before the crew rest area so recline in this row is unlimited. Push back commenced a minute early after all the over sized bags were stuffed into the overhead lockers. Another poor legroom shot, not as much as the Q400 but still enough....just. Another 767 next to us. This flight was the first time I had seen the new Qantas safety video which features John Travolta rather than the sleezy pilot. A nice change, the video is much more relaxed and engaged the passengers more than the old one. After the safety demo taxi commenced as we made our way out to runway 16L. after holding short for a Jetstar A320 we turned onto the runway and we were off with the power that is the reason I love the 763! A pretty steep climb out as with most 767s with a sharp left hand turn to head north, a few bumps on the way up but it was pretty smooth on the way up. Off to Brisbane, YSSY can be seen just under the wing. Soon after takeoff the cabin filled with the smell of food and not long after the cabin crew were through offering lunch, today a spinach and cheese calazone. A full bar service soon followed, I chose to get a can of lemonade. The Calazone, I was almost tempted to see if they had another, it was delicious. Today's in flight entertainment commenced before takeoff, the news was shown followed by a documentary about art, neither of which I bothered with choosing to look out the window instead. Decent today commenced over the Gold Coast as we made a Runway 01 approach so very few turns were made, a smooth approach with a little bit of turbulence as we came through the clouds. Landing was rather hard and seemed to shock everyone on board. Over the Gold Coast. Short Final over the airport. A 727 with what appears to be an old Ansett Bae146, someone might know th story behind the 146, I believe the 727 is named Tania and is some sort of static training aid these days. Qantas 747-438ER VH-OEH awaiting departure. Down We stopped infront of the terminal so the taxi in was quite short. There goes OEH. after parking at the gate there was a short wait to disembark the aircraft but that comes with sitting at the rear. Once in the terminal we headed directly to baggage claim where out bags were two of the last out. After that it was on to the airtrain and off to the City. Getting to Brisbane Airport: 31/01/2011 After an interesting but enjoyable few days in Brisbane it was time for us to head home. Today we would be getting to the airport via train from Zilmere which is two train rides and a trip that takes about an hour. However today due to a late train this took a bit longer having missed the airport train at Eagle Junction by about 30 seconds, it left as the train from Zilmere was pulling in. We figured Eagle Junction was a place we didn't want to wait for 30 minutes so we continued to Fortitude Valley. Fortitude Valley or China Town station is quite a modern station and appears quite new. After a short five minute wait the train to the airport arrived. From the City it is about 20 minute by train and there are very few stops, after Central only Fortitude Valley, Bowen Hills and Eagle Junction I believe. Arriving at the airport I tagged off my GoCard for the very last time this trip, the ride from Zilmere costing me $17. I don't know why but I don't have a problem with paying this where as I do have a problem paying $11.80 to get the train to Sydney Airport. Maybe it is because QR actually provide a fully air conditioned service with Luggage space unlike the Airport Link offering where it is really luck of the draw, usually an old S or R set. I would recommend this service to the airport to everyone who travels to Brisbane, it drops you in a really convenient spot and you never have to wait more than five minutes to get on a train as they cross over at the International stop, even though it may be 20 minutes later that you leave at least you can sit on it. Brisbane Airport: After the short walk from the train station to the Qantas check-in desks we found that there was no line for check in. With-in minutes we were on our way to security having scored an exit row seat on the 767 and row 13 on the 737, which in the 737-400 is directly behind the exit rows. Security today was a breeze, I even managed to sneak past the random explosive people for once, since the incident I have been through security a few times and they haven't come near me, I have found that if you look them straight in the eye they tend to leave you alone more than if you try not to make eye contact with them. Having not yet had lunch we decided to go for a walk through the terminal to see what there was to eat. As far as domestic terminals go I would have to say that Brisbane has th widest range of eateries that I have seen to date. There is a huge range of fast food outlets from Eagle Boys to Hungry Jacks as well as some small cafes and bars, today my eatery of choice was Eagle Boys Express which offers a $10.95 meal deal including a Pizza, Garlic Bread and a 600mL drink, well worth the money. Once we both had out food we sat down to eat where we could watch the planes taking off, landing and taxiing. Do I spot VH-QOM? Must have swapped between Sydney and Brisbane runs on Thursday after we got it, as the Brisbane to Canberra Q400 flight only runs a few days a week. After lunch a quick look at the clock....darn, still 3 hours till the flight leaves! After walking around the terminal for a bit we finally found a spot where we could plug the laptop in and watch a few episodes of the BBC comedy "Come Fly With Me". After watching the entire 6 episode first season there was about 10 minutes till our aircraft was to arrive, time to head over to gate 24 to see what todays bird was going to be. By the time we got to the gate there was a 767 turning off the runway, I could only assume it was ours, another new roo, only thing I could think was it was OGS again, there aren't many 767s with the revised livery (4 I think) and one was undergoing heavy maintenance at Sydney, knowing my luck it was going to be OGS, however as it got closer I found that it wasn't, todays aircraft was to be VH-OGQ, the display 767 from this years Canberra Airport Open Day. Having being on this aircraft before (not flown) I know that the interior is quite new and it certainly isn't as run down as OGS. Arriving from Darwin Yes, OGQ not OGS! Jetstar's newest A320, VH-VGF QF551: Aircraft: VH-OGQ Boeing 767-338 Name: Birdsville Seat: 34K STD: 1845 (1745 BNE Time) STA: 2020 Pushback: 1840 Wheels Up: 1847 Wheels Down: 1958 At Gate: 2010 Departure Gate: 24 Arrival Gate: 2 Stats: -First time on aircraft -4th time on type -56th Flight Boarding Pass for this flight, a nice touch for the check-in person to write the gate down for us (not that it's a problem for me) usually they don't even tell you the gate at Qantas. The gate lounge was quite empty, a lot less than what I would have expected for a flight this time of the day, boarding was called at 1825 and we joined the back of the rather short line. Not long after we were on our way down the Jetway and onto the 767 having no troubles finding the seat we were warmly greeted at our seats by two cabin crew, a lot happier than the usual Qantas crew and a lot younger, funnily enough one of them turned out to be my former Japanese teacher's twin sister. I need to work on getting the legroom shot right! Being in an Exit row I had to put the camera in the over head locker, when I stood up I looked at the load, I said to one of the crew it looked like a light load and she responded by telling me there was 92 on board, 90 Y class and only two in J. This is a light load alright, I have heard about the performance of the 767 with a light load and I knew it was fun ;D . After a quick exit row briefing we were ready to push back, early. The safety demo was played and before long we were holding short of runway 01 with the in-flight news showing, waiting for two E190s to land, watching them they appeared to be in very smooth air, this could be a really smooth climb. With the second one on the ground we lined up on the runway before the captain powered up, and we were off, in no time we were climbing out over Morton Bay with quite a rapid climb, soon after we made a sharp right and set course for Sydney, shortly after takeoff it was announced that dinner would soon be served, this surprised me, we were only supposed to get a snack, even better, it was a full hot dinner tray! Climb out was very smooth and as soon as the seatbelt sign was off the meal cart was out, arriving at row 34 in no time, the drinks cart there before I could even look at the dinner. Today the tray featured Cheese, crackers, water, a small chocolate and our main which today was braised beef in tomato sauce with parsley tomatoes and beans, not a bad offering at all! To give it a rating out of 5 I would say a 4. Friends dinner tray, was a bit hard to get one of my own as the tray table was in the armrest. I got lemonade with my meal. This is the last picture for the report due to poor lighting. The main screen IFE was actually decent, unlike on the way to Brisbane. Today after the news was shown a cut down version of the Gruen Transfer was shown followed by an episode of Man vs Wild, I don't really watch Man vs Wild, so I tuned into "Rock on Q" and reclined the seat right back as there was no-one behind me, quite a relaxing position. Before long we had commenced our decent over Newcastle and my seat had to be returned to the up right position before been locked into position by the Cabin crew, todays approach would take us directly over the Sydney CBD before making a sharp right hand turn to land on runway 34L. Again there was not a spot of turbulence which I thought was very strange, a nice smooth landing followed as we made our way to gate two, after waiting for another aircraft to come out of the ally we made our way in before another short wait for an engineer to bring us in, not long after we were back in the terminal, thinking our next aircraft had not arrived I checked the gate, no departures from it till our, no arrivals so what was there would be ours, but on the way in I didn't see any 737-400s, only 738s and 767s. Sydney Airport: Not too much time here. Walked down to gate 8 to see what the bird to Canberra was to be, it was VH-VYL, a 737-800, not been a fan of night flights I went to the service desk to see if I could get an Exit row only to be told I was already in one. LOL, how embarrassing, in the 737-800 the exit rows are rows 13 and 14 as opposed to rows 11 and 12 in the old 400s. It now appeared that my move from row 15 to 13 wasn't stupid after all. After this I sat down and browsed the web for a bit on the laptop and before long boarding was called for QF807. QF807: Aircraft: VH-VYL Boeing 737-838 Name: Wangaratta Seat: 13F STD: 2110 STA: 2205 Pushback: 2100 Wheels Up: 2112 Wheels Down: 2150 At Gate: 2154 Departure Gate: 8 Arrival Gate: 11 Stats: -First time on aircraft -7th time on 737-800, 22nd 737 flight -57th Flight Boarding for this flight was called a few minutes early and after my boarding pass rejected me the stub was ripped off and I was cleared to board. No mistakes with my seat again. Not long after the slow stream of people stopped, tonights flight wouldn't of had more that 60 people on. Fueling finished the final papers were handed to the CSM and the door was closed around 15 minutes before scheduled departure, push back soon followed. Once we were all ready to go the long taxi all the way out to 34R began, the co-pilot gave us some flight details and by the time he had finished we were not far from the end of the runway. As we began making our turn on to the runway the engines powered up to the point where they let the engines stabilize and about halfway through the turn full power was applied the plane straightening quite quickly, not long after we were climbing out, again very smooth, as I said before very un-Sydney like. I of course expected turbulence in Canberra! Seatbelt sign was off about three minutes after takeoff and the inflight service started. Today we were served French Vanilla Almonds (YUM!) with a choice of Juice, water or wine. Not being 18 I chose the juice as I already had water with me due to biting my lip on takeoff when the plane hit a bump on the runway. Our decent started when the climb finish our timed cruise was a whopping total of 30 seconds ::) . We made our approach for runway 35, pretty standard for Canberra except for one thing, the turbulence, there was none, quite strange really, it would have to be the first time I have ever flown into Canberra without experiencing a spot of turbulence. Landing was a good one and we made the taxi back to the new Qantas terminal where we docked at one of the new glass walkways. Soon enough I was off the flight and contrary to my last Brisbane trip my bag got to Canberra with me!! Conclusion: All in all, for the money I payed I think I am going to find it very hard to book with Virgin again, the Qantas service on all four flights was superb, even the ground staff were great, except for that guy on Business Class check-in at Canberra :P . I would be quite happy to say that the flight back from Brisbane to Sydney has been my best flying experience to date. My next trip will be with Qantas, I have no doubt!
  4. Here is my report for my recent trip to Brisbane, there are a lot of photos hence the warning, hope everyone enjoys! CBR-SYD Flight: QF560 Date: 10/07/2010 STD: 0645 Push back: 0653 Rotate: 0700 Gate: 14 STA: 0735 Touchdown: 0736 At Gate: 0742 Type: Boeing 737-838 Rego: VH-VXR Name: Shepparton Seat: 14F (Exit Row) Arriving at the airport around 0520 I headed straight to check in, the wait for check in was quite long until all passenger for the Brisbane flight were called forward, this almost halved the queue. Having already checked in online I proceeded with Ed (my travel partner) to the bag drop desk where we requested an exit row, only to be told that there were none left. After getting through security we went to the service desk on the departure level with 'Todd M' accompanying to ask for an exit row, this time we were told that it was possible to be seated in the exit row so we were reissued with our boarding passes. After about 15 minutes of talking with Todd his flight was called for boarding. Not long after that our flight was also called which made for a mad dash across the tarmac to our bird for today VH-VXR, a new rego for me, glad to see there was no VXP there :D. As per the usual I was the first on board. This is the only picture I have from this flight, as I was in the exit row my camera was in the overhead locker. After about 15 minutes the aircraft was fully boarded and the doors were sealed. A short delay due to VXA having issues and we pushed back from the standoff bay, todays load factor was around 60%. A short taxi following the reason for our delay before we turned off at taxi way November(?), VXA would be using the full runway, so we were now #1 in line to take off. A quick 90 degree tun onto the runway and the pilot in control powered up the engines, I think this is the first time I have been on an aircraft that has used taxiway November(?) and rotated in front of the terminal, that's one short takeoff roll, climb today was a bit bumpy but not too bad. After about 10 minutes the seatbelt sign was turned off and the crew began the inflight service. Today we were served a raspberry muffin (from the Sydney biscuit company) and a juice. The muffin was delicious! After a short cruise we began our decent into Sydney, today landing on runway 34L. Approach was quite smooth followed by an awesome landing onto 34L. A brief taxi back into the terminal followed. Parking at gate 1. Ed and myself tried, in vein, to get off fast so we had more time between flights, but this failed, after a few minutes we were off the aircraft on our way to hungry jacks for some brekky. SYD-BNE Flight: QF510 Date: 10/07/2010 STD: 0835 Push back: 0843 Rotate: 0853 Gate: 5 STA: 1005 Touchdown: 1006 At Gate: 1010 Type: Boeing 767-338 Rego: VH-OGM Name: Bunderburg Seat: 40K This leg would be my first ride on a 767. After a quick stop for brekky I arrived at the gate to find VH-OGM, I was not surprised to see the aircraft as I had been told that it would be the aircraft operating the flight weeks in advance. For those who are unaware OGM is in an international configuration featuring blue seats and the dream time business class seats. On board with VZD parking next to us, Yananyi Dreaming is the next one across Seconds prior to push back. After boarding was complete Matthew Johns and all, the plane pushed back and the standard safety video was shown, this would be followed by the long taxi out to runway 34R. Push back As per the usual taxi was uneventful however the douche behind me was bashing his arm rest and shouting at it "WORK!". I assume he was referring to the IFE which had been turned off for taxi and take off. taxiing Vietnam 777 exits 34L After waiting for a few aircraft to land and takeoff we taxied into position holding for the Virgin 737 just ahead of us, after about 30 seconds we were cleared for takeoff and the throttles were pushed to full. I was surprised with the amount of power the engines produced, considering the flight was fully booked we were in the air very fast, I really wish I had my camera ready to go because there was an awesome vapor trail coming off the wing as we lifted off. Climbing out Flaps retracted, still climbing The seat belt sign was turned off quite early in the flight however just as the cabin crew was starting the service it was turned back on due to turbulence which was a non event. There was a few bumps but nothing major. still climbing cruise The cabin crew eventually made it through with the in flight snack. Today there was a choice of an Apple and Raspberry Cake (from the Sydney Biscuit Company) or a fresh apple. I opted (as did pretty much everyone) for the cake. The cake was delicious, fresh, and had plenty of flavor. A drinks service followed with choices been coffee, tea, juice, water or a soft drink. I opted for a coffee as I really need a caffeine hit. Before long we commenced our decent into Brisbane. The captain once again advised that there would be turbulence however this eventuated to nothing, well there was a few bumps (I think after my Japan experience not much phases me). Turning at the top of decent Spoilers deployed Flaps down as we break through the clouds over Morton Bay On final approach for runway 19 Over land just about to touch down down Landing was very smooth today, one of the better widebody landings I have had (only my third wide body flight). Rollout was brief before we exited the runway and made our way to the gate. Here is a picture of OGF prior to boarding. Expecting to find a seat where the recline was limited (the online check in showed 54 as the last row) I was pleased to find that there was a row 55 and that it had a sign on it saying "Not for Passenger Use". I would be able to use the full recline of the seat today! I found that the domestic configuration of the 767 provided more leg room than the International one making for a much more comfortable flight. View out the window Pushback was a few minutes late, nothing too major. Taxi to runway 19 was as per the normal until we stopped on the taxiway and the called someone over the PA to press there call button. We were sitting on the taxiway for about two minutes before we once again got underway for runway 19. Once at the runway we had to wait for a Qantas 738 to land, a Virgin 738 to depart and a Virgin 73G to land. Once the runway was cleared we rolled onto the runway and powered up. Takeoff on this flight was pretty ordinary due to crosswinds. Climb out was also bumpy but after five minutes things smoothed out. On the way out At cruise Once the seat belt sign was turned off the cabin crew moved through the cabin with the in flight snack and usual drinks service. Today our choice was either a cherry streausal (not to be confused with strudel) or once again a fresh apple. I am not usually a fan of cherries but today I opted for the streausal as well as a can of lemonade. The streausal was delicious (once again well done to the Sydney Biscuit Company). After the Qantas 'Welcome' program presented by Deborah Hutton the News was shown followed by a very funny episode of the Gruen Transfer. The captain came over the PA giving us an update on our arrival time and the weather conditions in Sydney. Turbulence was predicted. Decent On finals for runway 07 As we made our approach the turbulence went from minor to quite major. As we made out final approach for runway 07 it became apparent that we were landing with some decent crosswinds and the 767 got thrown around a bit. On more than one occasion we thought that we were going to do a go around, but after one of the worst approaches I have ever had, the pilot made one very nice landing (given the circumstances). A taxi from the International terminal to gate 5 followed, we had to wait for an aircraft to come out of the ally which delayed us a bit. Once at the gate the engines were shut down and the people all rushed for the door (once again we remained seated and waited patiently), leaving me to think, that's what it was like in a 767, do I want to know what it is like sitting in row 19 of a Dash 8-Q400? I immediately made my way to gate 17 to try and get exit rows (row 1) on the next flight and that's where it got interesting..... Taxiing past the International terminal China Airline A330 with Special 50th Anniversary Titles VH-OEJ 'Wunula Dreaming' about to leve as QF1 QF A380 VH-OQD departs for Singapore Continuing on from the end of the last flight, when I got to the desk I was told that the flight QF1493 had been canceled. Fearing I would be put on a 737-400 (I hate them with a passion) I requested to be put on QF1491 only to be told that my bag were already on QF805. I was handed a boarding pass to find I was in row 28 (one that doesn't exist in a 734) so there was only one possibility, a 738, I said to Ed, "I will be very happy if it is operated by VH-VXB", Ironically..... SYD-CBR Flight: QF805 Date: 14/07/2010 STD: 1755 Push back: 1800 Rotate: 1808 Gate: 9 STA: 1850 Touchdown: 1845 At Gate: 1850 Type: Boeing 737-838 Rego: VH-VXB Name: Yananyi Dreaming Seat: 28F As can be seen the aircraft operating the flight, much to my delight was in fact Yananyi Dreaming :D! Boarding was called on time at 1735 and I found myself at the back of VXB with what appeared to be a very heavy load. Push back was a bit late followed by a taxi all the way out to 34R. Another power up and we were up making a few sharp turns over Sydney before straightening out. As expected from the previous flight takeoff and climb was bumpy and with the same forecast for most of the flight as soon as the cabin crew were allowed they were up with the in flight service. No choices on this one. A sandwich was handed out Half was Silverside and Rocked, the other was Egg, Mayo and Rocket, both were very nice. The basic drinks service came around and I got juice. The cabin crew just got through with the rubbish collection just before the seatbelt sign was turned on due to our approach and turbulence. Landing was nothing special very bumpy on approach using th full length of runway 35 before a taxi into gate 13, maybe that was an bad omen. After deboarding we got to baggage claim only to find that our bags a long with about 30 others had not made it on to the flight. After the report was filed I left the airport, by the time I got home I was called saying that my bag had been found and would be delivered the next day. Summing Up: Qatas was awesome. Service was great except for the minor mishap. The 767 is an awesome aircraft and Yananyi Dreaming is just a normal 737 with an awesome paint job. I am already planning my next trip with Qantas. I hope you have enjoyed reading this!
  5. I decided to go on a transport related trip to Sydney for the day and due to cheap airfares I decided to fly. This time was the opposite to last time I flew Qantas one way and Virgin the other, I was highly disappointed with the performance of Virgin Blue and pleased with Qantas. I walked out my font door at 0420 to be met by my uncle and his friends who were off to Dundee Island near Darwin for a fishing trip leaving on a flight around the same time as mine, so I got a ride with them in the taxi. After a few pick ups in Canberra's inner North we made our way to the airport arriving at 0455. Having already checked in online I made my way directly to security and into the departure lounge. At about 0520 I was joined by Ed who would be travelling with me today. CBR-SYD Date: 21/04/2010 Flight: QF1460 STD: 0620 ATD: 0615 STA: 0710 ATA: 0655 Aircraft : Dash 8 Q400 Rego: VH-QOP Seat: 15A Seq: 1 Departure Gate: 14 Arrival Gate: 17 At 0600 boarding was called and we made our short walk across the tarmac to VH-QOP A bit early for decent photos. After about 10 minutes sitting on the plane the doors were sealed and those beautiful turbo props began to spin as the all male cabin crew did the safety demonstration. After waiting for my uncles Brisbane flight to begin taxi we turned around and taxied straight onto the runway, Captain Michael Bourke (my second time with him at the controls) pushed the throttles foward for one of the quickest takeoff rolls followed by one of the smoothest climbs ever. Ready to taxi Climbing out Qantas logo, note the reflection Shortly after takeoff the first officers (the only female crew member) came over the PA and gave us the usual update as the cabin crew came through the cabin serving a 'Breakfast Box' which contained Banana Bread with Butter and a choice of Juice, Water, Tea or Coffee. Not a very good picture A view to the front After about 10 minutes the seatbelt sign came back on as we began our decent into Sydney. Top of decent Sydney's outskirts Getting closer After a few turns we were lined up with runway 34L as the gear dropped down into position with a huge thud, followed by a very smooth landing a few minutes later, a short taxi into gate 17 and the engines were cut. We were lucky enough to get to go up to the cockpit to meet the captain. After that we were escorted into the terminal by the flight attendant (as the door had to be opened) and then it was off to Hungry Jacks for Brekky. On the ground It's Wunula Dreaming A pretty shitty shot of the flight deck SYD-CBR Date: 21/04/10 Flight: DJ672 STD: 2035 ATD: 2200 STD: 2130 ATA: 2245 Aircraft: Embraer 170 Rego: VH-ZHB Name: Brazilliant Blue Departure Gate: 36 Arrival Gate: 7 After an enjoyable day in Sydney it was back to the airport to check in for the short flight back to Canberra. After checking in we met up with Mat and went to a pizza place in Tempe for dinner with Ken. We had been informed upon check-in of a minute delay. After a delicious dinner we returned to the airport with 5 minutes to go till our boarding time of 2005. After checking the screens we saw that our gate had changed from gate 39 to gate 40. After running to the gate we found that there was no aircraft yet and that our gate had again been changed to gate 36. After a long wait our aircraft VH-ZHB turned up at about 2120 (we should be 10 minutes away from Canberra by now! After a quick turn around we boarded the aircraft at 2135. As the time past it became clear we would be sitting here for a while longer. The captain then came over the PA and announced that the aircraft had developed and engineering fault that required a thorough inspection every time the aircraft was on the ground meaning that by the end of the day they were very late. At about 2155 the safety demonstration was commenced at the gate with push back commencing at the conclusion of this. Followed by a long taxi all the way out to runway 34R. As we reached the top of the runway we were thrown back into our seats with that awesome power up from the small but powerful engines of the E170. A very fast takeoff roll and then a rough climb out. The crew came through and took orders, they only got two (one from me). I purchased a bottle of water and when they asked me if I wanted ice I made a joke asking if I could catch my own (there was ice coming out of the aircon). After another quick cruise we began out approach into Canberra, something different for me today we would be arriving on runway 17 (from the Belconnen end of the airport). After a quick landing roll we turned off the runway and taxied to gate 7 where we disembarked using the front stairs. I was surprised to see that along with the other overnighting aircraft was the blue Virgin VH-VBY. Over all a nice trip but I was not impressed with Virgin's service.
  6. Went out to the airport once again this afternoon for a bit more spotting, a few interesting ones in this afternoon including Strategics YQA and Virgins VUA and ZPM. A long with the regular 734s and E Jets. This afternoon was one of the busiest days I have ever seen t Canberra airport with at one stage 12 commercial aircraft were on the ground causing a bank up for Virgin Blue as they only have three spaces and there was four on the ground. A bit of a surprise seeing this one come in, not one I was expecting. Strategics VH-YQA 'The Kimberly' about to touch down. VH-ZHE, 'Bee Bop-a Blue' taxis for departure on runway 35 737-800 VH-VUA 'Bondi Babe' follows closely behind. VH-ZPI 'Allie Albury' gets going. 'The Kimberly' departs after a short stop, taxiing to runway 35 YQA heading onto taxiway November. VH-TJL 'Swift' ready to depart, taxiing to runway 35 VH-ZPM 'Emma-braer' taxis to depart to Adelaide. Tiger VH-VNC back to Melbourne after a short stop. VH-TJF 'Brolga' taxis to 35 and finally Todd M's favorite > VH-TJR 'Lorikeet' taxis out
  7. I went out to Canberra Airport on Monday afternoon to do some spotting, here are the decent photos from the afternoon. Unfortunently my lens was smudged which spoiled most of my photos. VH-QOM leaves Canberra Airport as QF1476 approximently 45 minutes late due to an aircraft change Virgin Blue's VH-ZPD 'Tickled Blue' arrives at Canberra from Brisbane. I haven't seen this plane since I flew on it when it was two weeks old so nice to see it again. VH-ZPB 'Rio de Gold Coast' makes its way to runway 35. VH-VNJ preparing to depart to Melbourne VH-VNJ taxing onto taxiway November for departure to Melbourne
  8. Is the delivery for Qantas? If so it could be QOX which is on its way over here registered as C-FZGC Edit: Just realised that is posted in another thread
  9. VH-VOK has Live 2 Air issues, lol. It wouldn't work when I flew on it until they refunded everyones money and put it on free mode. nice trip report btw.

Check in was easy due to a group check in counter. A/C arrived from Brisbane on time and we boarded at 1745. The climb out of Canberra was smooth after one of the shortest takeoff rolls I have ever had. A brief inflight meal of sanwhiches was served before our decent over the Sydney CBD. A bit of turbulence on final approach followed by a very smooth landing and a long taxi back to the gate. After collecting my bag we headed to th Formule 1 hotel for the night. Sydney-Tokyo Narita Date: 19/09/09 Flight No: JO772/JL772 (codeshare) A/C Rego: JA706J (B777-200LR) Seat: 55F Seq: 197 STD:0810 ATD:0830 STA: 1710 ATD: 1717 Gate: 8 Checked in at about 530 am originally assigned seat 50G. The aircraft arrived late and our boarding time became our departure time. A brief taxi to the runway before a smooth takeoff. After takeoff food was served. We were given a pork dish with some Japanese salads a tim tam and rice. Inflight entertainment was a wide choice of music, movies and games. After passing over the tip of Australia we hit turbulence and it was bumpy for the remainder of the flight due to a Catagory 5 typhoon. About an hour before landing the cabin crew served sandwhiches and yogurt. Landing was very bumpy and we came in over speed which made the landing pretty scary. JAL were very goo and I enjoyed the flight, except for the landing. Tokyo Haneda-Kansai (Osaka/Kyoto) 20/09/09 Flight No: JL173 Rego: JA315J Seat: 55C STD: 0625 ATD: 0630 Seq: u/k STA: 0730 ATA: 0730 Gate:25 Arrived at the airport at 0500. Found check in and then painstakeinly moved through security. Got to the gate thinking that I must have been given the wrong gate as I had seat 55C and at the gate was a B738. I thought that we must have been on the domestic 747 next to it. At 0600 our flight was called to board on the 737. Upon looking for my seat I found that the seating skipped from row 22 to row 50. Departure was smooth passing directly over the top of Mt Fuji. Inflight service was poor, we were only served drinks. Landing at Kansai was smooth and we arrived dead on time. Tokyo Narita-Sydney Kingsfordsmith Date: 05/10/09 Flight No: JO771/JA771 Rego: JA707J Seat: 57A STD:2005 (2205 AEDST) ATD: 2005 Seq.: 197 STA: 0740 (06/10/09) ATA: 0718 Gate: 77 Got to the airport just after 4pm after over 2 weeks of traveling. With check in out of the way our group of 20 split up for a few hours to go and get dinner. Had a nice seafood pasta in one of the restaurants. Got to the gate about 30 minutes before boarding after clearing immigration and security, our gate been the one down the very end of the terminal. Boarding was called a few minutes early and I was the first economy passenger to board. Push-back was also on time before one of those painfully long taxis to the runway. Takeoff was very bumpy eventually climbing to 35000ft. Cabin crew served a pretty dodgy meal after takeoff, Wasabi Beef, which was repulsive. Turbulence continued throughout the night keeping me awake and extending the viewing time of my movie Transformers 2 to almost 4 hour as I couldn't concentrate during turbulence. Finally fell asleep at about 3am just crossing Cape York. Woke up passing Rockhampton as the sun was rising and just in time for a hot towel from the Cabin crew. A strange Cheese and Mushroom Croissant thingo was served along with some yogurt and a Kit Kat, none of this was really that nice at all. Passing Brisbane we saw the beautiful red sky as the sun really became visible. Decent began passing over Dubbo before over flying the Sydney Habour and landing on Runway 34L which menat a very short taxi in. Engines were shut down and we could finally get off, cleared Customs and Quarantine before getting put on a Murrays Bus to the domestic airport. Got stuck in the traffic and it took us longer than it did to get through Customs. Sydney Kingsfordsmith-Canberra Date: 06/10/09 Flight No: QFA1473 Rego: VH-QON Seat: 15A STD: 1040 ATD: 1050 Seq: 025 STA: 1130 ATA: 1140 Gate: 17 (Canberra Cityflyer Lounge) After the slow drive from the International Airport we were dropped off at the curbside check in where we checked our bags in. Having been issued our boarding pass at Narita sped things up a bit. We then moved through security and to gate 17. We then split up for brekky, after some Hungry Jack myself and a friend headed to the Qantas Museum where we watched the Runway 16R(?) operations before heading back to the gate. VH-TJU pushed back and started up at one of the near by gates before having to return to the gate with a technical fault. Out aircraft VH-QON arrived at the gate about 10 late after a hold up on the taxi way, TJU I assume, therefore delaying us a bit. Boarded at 1025 and sat on the a/c for a bit. Startup commenced and we sat with the props at that quiet startup speed for a while before we were pushed back and the engines finished their startup giving me the prop sound I like. A short taxi out before a wait holding short on 16R?. Takeoff was very smooth despite the mention of turbulance on the way up. A refreshment of Apple Streusel was served a long with a tea and coffee service. Decent into Canberra began with the tiniest bit of turbulence and a dusty touchdown in Canberra, home at last!
  12. they should get Q400s!! I love those things!

While waiting for the flight to finish boarding I enjoyed Live to Air. Push-back was dead on time and we taxied straight out to the runway past the QF Dash 8 that had carked it (VH-SCE IIRC). Takeoff from Cairns was smooth and the Live 2 Air system was having issues. After battling with the system the Cabin Supervisor announced that he was putting the system onto free mode after which it didn't play up at all. A wonderful but bumpy approach into Sydney over the Harbor and onto Runway 34 Right (after circling the airport) a quick taxi past the wonderful looking VH-VXB and into Gate 40. Sydney to Canberra Date: 12/07/2009 Flight No: DJ664 Reg: VH-ZHF Name: Little Miss Sunshine Coast Type: Embraer 170 Seat: 16A Seq: 11 Class: Economy STD: 18:20 ATD: 18:19 STA: 19:15 ATA: 19:18 Gate: 35 After the quick walk from gate 40 I arrived at gate 35 just in time to see ZHF pulling into the gate. After the quick turn around we were called to board at about 18:00. I was the first passenger on the a/c leaving my family for dead (I was sitting down reading the safety card when they got on) and realizing how annoying it was going to be with the widow so far in front of the seat. Once again push-back was on time with the cabin crew finishing the safety demo before push-back had commenced. After start up we followed VH-VOK all the way out to 34R where we finally departed Sydney after 15 minutes of taxiing. The flight was at a very low altitude of 16000ft and we had a very rough decent into Canberra. Touchdown was pretty much on time on runway 35 and a quick taxi back to gate 5 where they decided not to use the rear stairs so it was a bit of a wait to get off. Anyway congrats to Virgin Blue on keeping us on time (un-like certain other airlines) and making the flight enjoyable.

The aircraft had arived late due to traffic in Sydney. We boarded at our schedualed departure time of 11:55 and we were on the ground for another 15 or so minutes. Eventually we were ready to commence start up with Captain Michael Bourke in control. A long taxi down to the end of runway 35 (we had to wait for VZC to start up) and we were away at last a full half hour behind at 12:24. Very smooth out of Canberra, I really enjoyed the Q400s climb (my first time). Once at the top of the climb the cabin crew thew out the food which was a very ordinary sundried tomato and chesse loaf served with chilli jam. This was followed by out breif decent into Sydney landing over the ocean with plenty of turbulance. A short taxi to gate 17 and we disembarked with our flight to Cairns due to depart in a matter of minutes. Canberra to Sydney Date: 03/07/2009 Flight No: QF926 Reg: VH-VXP Name: Logan Type: Boeing 737-800 Seat: 12F Seq: 116 Class: Economy STD: 13:25 ATD: 14:00 STA: 16:35 ATA: 16:52 Gate: 9 Once again we were running late and were called for boarding at our departure time. (still behind by about 3 hours we were meant to be on QF922) Once on the a/c we waited for ages before been told that the had been a loading error and that we would be on the ground for a while still. Once we pushed back dead on 14:00 a full 35 minutes behind we were on oour way with a quick taxi out to the runway and takeoff to the West. After a rather rough climb the IFE screens came out of the celing and a rather dodgy movie (which I chose to ignore) was shown. The Cabin crew served either a choice of fish or beef of which I chose the beef which was very nice. After about 10 minutes with the cabin crew serving ther meals still the in-flight service was suspended for about 20min. due to turbulance. Once those trays were collected the crew then served a very hard ice cream. Eventually we began our decent into Cairns and we were on the ground. The decent was rather nice and smooth as well as scenic fling in over the mountains as it brought the caotic delayed travel to an end.
  15. Todd M says if Qantas weren't flying into Canberra today, why would he be working, proving that this is bullocks.
  16. I am heading to Cairns in July and I have a few questions about Qantas services 1. What would they serve as a 'refreshment on a flight at 9am out of Canberra? 2. What would they serve as Lunch on Syd-Cairns? 3. In flight entertainment on a 734, what's it like? 4. In flight on a 763, what is it and how is the quality? The 763 will be my first wide body flight, I am very excited as I have heard these are awesome aircraft to fly in.

After going through security and getting a random bomb test I sat down waiting to board me E190, VH-ZPL. Other aircraft in the VB terminal included VH-ZPG, VH-ZHA and VH-ZHE. At 0615 we boarded through the rear doors. We pushed back right on time and taxied straight onto the runway without having to wait for any other a/c. It was a textbook takeoff with no troubles at all. About 5min into the flight the captain told us that he was climbing to 38000ft and that we could expect to be in Melbourne about 10min ahead of time. After some cheese and biscuits we began decent. There was a lot of cloud and the usual Melbourne turbulence but we landed without trouble. We were about 5min early getting to gate 1. Melbourne to Canberra Date: 12/01/09 Flight No: DJ719 Reg: VH-VBH Type: Boeing 737-7Q8 Name: 'Spirit of Salty' Seat: 20C Departure: 1450 Arrival: 1555 Gate: 8 Arrived at the airport about an hour before the flight and used blue check to check-in. I had some Maccas for lunch and then headed to gate 8. By the time I finally got to the gate they were ready to board the flight. After taking my seat (20C) I watched the Live 2 Air. While we were waiting we had a 737-800 pulled up either side with VH-VUG on one and VH-VUM on the other. We pushed back on time and went on a very speedy taxi by the time we got out to the runway a 747-400 had just landed and was clearing the runway, we rolled straight on to the runway and began the takeoff roll, we lifted off with about a quarter of the runway remaining. Live 2 Air was activated with a credit card and continued. Cheese and Biscuits again and then the very turbulent landing into Canberra. Just before landing a crosswind hit and the right side of the a/c touched down, followed by the left. We were 15 min early. The cabin crew on this flight were funny, the cabin supervisor say things like "Virgin Blue have the best cabin crew on earth but they are all on annual leave so you are stuck with these three" and "We are about 15 minutes early which proves red jets fly faster". Hope I did the trip report right.:icon_lol:
