  2. Interesting, Call the Brisbane tower and ask them what happened, I'd be interested to know....if it is possible to over fly Bris, I'm in.
  3. Thanks Coop, I plan to be up there in a bout 10 days time to do some photograpy, I am looking forward to it more than ever now. I'll let you know how I go.

  5. Michael Congratulations, what do you sell?? If I had known I'd have made a point of saying gday. GAJab, I'm sorry that I missed you up there, I did keep my eyes open for you. I dropped in to Tooradin to get fuel on the way home only to be told to go somewhere else..... I only needed 30 litres to top up prior to crossing the pond and I was up against last light any way. I ended up at Leongatha where thay helped out. I will be avoiding Tooradin in future after that treatment. Have a go at them for me would you. Cheers Qwerty
  6. I came home last night (Sun) to beat the crook weather forecast for this afternoon in Vic/Bass Strait. As it was the straight was clagged in and I had to go over the top at 6500 for most of the strait. I didnt see much of the comercial displays or the presentations, I was busy adjusting the mixture on my a/c, giving demo flights, picked up a mate from Wagga on Sat and spent some time in the air with a photographer. I was flat out and missed most of the show. It seems that Natfly is a friday affair. Over the last few years that I have been going, the is a significant exodus on Sat am. Last year, a high proportion of the displays were pulled down by the time I got there at 9.00 am on Sat. Next year I am going on thur, walking around on Friday and heading off on Friday after noon. The grass hoppers were a bugger, I still havent got them all off. operation of 09/27 all day was a bugger too. Apart from those minor gripes it was a good weekend. Im sorry that I didnt get to meet any of you guys.

John, The blasted pages are "protected" by one of those idiotic disclaimers, try this address- http://www.airservices.gov.au/publications/aip.asp - Then you will need to click on AGREE - and on the next page, open up the bottom dot point - and the fifth dot point on the next page These are all the ICAO codes for Australia. That is a lot of mucking around compared with clicking "Resources" at the top the page you are on now and then clicking "Airport codes" Cheers, Qwerty

  9. Gday John Too easy. Y = Aust YP = Aust Perth region YM = Aust Melbourne region YB = Aust Brisbane region The last two letters are usually the first and last leters of the town or city. Look them up (decode) here, http://www.airservices.gov.au/publications/pending/ersa/LND__11-Mar-2010.pdf
  10. Targets sounds like an appropriate idea (I'm Tasmanian so perhaps a convict arrow pointing up might be better). How about a 15 mm dia red and white target sticker on the shirt pocket, and for those who were about to say "I will be waring a T shirt", where a shirt pocket would have been if you had worn a proper shirt. Does that sound reasonable. :confused:

  13. Hey guys, Good to see you BrettC, how goes the training. The guys here are pretty laid back, lots of plane spotting and HEAPS of pics. I started posting here and chatting and things sort of got going. I hope these blokes dont mind the invasion of us rats looking for a life raft. Its a good site and as you say only as good as the participants (including the moderators) make it. Lets keep it all positive though, I have had enough **** in my life and still get a bit of it from time to time, I like it here, nice, friendly and full of aviation nuts like me. BTW Ive posted a bugger of a pic in the "guess the airstrip" competition.
  14. I found this pic on my computer while looking for airfield pics for the competition, I saw this on a toilet door in a pub I stayed in on one of my trips, it just seemed to me to be an amusing juxtaposition.

No No No, you have it all wrong.....these are the days...right now, get in and fly, right now, Drifter, trike, Lightwing or a plastic.....they are all good and cheaper than $14/hr and $90/hr in their respective times. In fifteen years we willa llbe saying how cheap and regulation free Rec aviation was back in 2010.......go now and enjoy, its all there and its cheaper than it has ever been and the aircraft are all pretty well sorted now......Go Go Go.

  19. Thanks guys, it was an interesting trip. This occurrence gave me a new perspective on how difficult it is to be objective about your own state of competancy. This is also how people end up driving cars as pissed as parrots. When they get in the car they simply dont realize how drunk they are, its only when they get pulled over or hit something that they stop and think about how pissed they are.

After watching Windsor's vid on Hypoxia, I thought you guys might like to hear about a mental incapacitation incident that occurred to me and just like hypoxia, I didn't even realize it was happening. In fact I didn't know about it until I was thinking about the flight several weeks later and finally pieced together the whole story with the clear view of calm considered hindsight. I had arranged a cross country trip. I was to depart Tassie and fly to Mackay and return, picking up another mate at Yarram on the way north. The excuse for the trip was that there was a slight crackling in my radio and another mate who had installed the radio had moved to Mackay so I thought it would be a good idea to go up there and get him to fix the radio. All the planning was done, the aircraft packed and ready to go. I got up on departure morning with a bit of a headache and not feeling the best, I was OK, just not at my best. No biggy. I got ready had a reasonable breakfast and checked the weather on the computer, high cloud of no consequence and all OK apart from a bit of a breeze, OK it was a 25kn north westerly but again no biggy. I completed an uneventful (in my mind) trip at about 5000 ft from Tassie as far as Hogan Island just south of the Victorian coast. At this time, I was starting to feel a bit crook but nothing serious just the headache was back and I felt a bit doey in the head and didn't feel comfortable. I might have been a bit squeemish in the stomach too, I just didn't feel on top of the world. The weather had become a bit cruddy too. I had to descend to 1500 feet and then 800 feet and dodge around half a dozen rain showers between me and Yarram, the breeze was picking up too, I was punching about a 25 kn head wind and there was a sizable crosswind component, I was looking out the right side of the windscreen to where I was going so there was a reasonable breeze. At least, over the water and the flat area around Yarram the air was at least smooth. I executed a tricky wheeler landing at Yarram with a ground speed of about 10 or 15kn. I managed to half taxi, half slide on the gravel and half fly to the taxiway but there was no way that I was going to turn 90 degrees into the taxiway. At this point I was stopped on the runway with the engine at about half power, the brakes on and the tail in the air. If I reduced power or lowered the tail I was in real danger of becoming airborne, sliding back on the gravel or being blown over backwards. The guy I was there to pick up and another mate came over (both pilots by the way) and grabbed the struts and helped me taxi all the way into an open hangar. Now this was only about 20 minutes after I started to realise that I was feeling a bit crook over Hogan Island and now I was decidedly sick and weak. It was about 3.00 pm, my mate took me to his place and pointed me at a bed where I stayed till the next day. I got up the next day and was fine, we got organised and headed off on our trip. I didn't think much about the flight across Bass Straight till a few weeks later. My take on this is that I was a long way below par when I got out of bed in Tassie before I left. I now know that I did not or was not able to recognise my poor mental state. During the Bass Strait crossing I was under a 15 minute reporting schedule and I missed every single report, Melbourne Centre had to chase me for my scheds. Under normal circumstances I am right on top of all of my flying, I was clearly not functioning properly and worse than that I was not able to recognise that I was not functioning properly. The deteriorating weather, rain dodging and challenging landing was probably what finished me off, I was exhausted. I am sure that I could not have flow for another half an hour and I am horrified at what my reaction times and coordination must have been like. I am now prone to err very much on the side of caution. There is nothing that will push me into flying if I am not dead certain that both me and the aircraft are in a proper and fit state to take to the air.

  22. Great video, thanks for putting it up. I love flying, I am going to have to have a go at that. I had about 0.3 in a winch launch years before I learned to fly, I remember it all clearly but missed a lot of the experience because I had no idea what was going on most of the time. The guy gave me the stick but I just got into a PIO and it was all a just a stuff up. I'd like to have a go and get into some aeros. The thought of flying without a head set, in a quiet cabin is really appealing..I hate noise.

As with all these regs, you can look all blasted day and there will be some obscure clause buried somewhere where no one woudl think of looking that will clearly state an exception to what you want. In this case it seems that a judge may have made a ruling. My PPL says I can fly a single engined aircraft with an MTOW of less that 5700KG, gess what a rec a/c is........ maybe its as simple as that. The PPL does not say the the a/c must be on the australian register and if the aircraft is properly registered and legal to fly in Aust, irrespective of where is is registered, I can see a bit of fun in Court with it.
