  2. Congratulations on passing your RPL test. What was the aircraft and where do you fly ?
  3. Is it worth taking a handheld scanner along ?......or is there a loudspeaker commentry running during aerial displays ?
  4. So on first read thru, if you are a Flight Examiner, Flight Engineer or Part 141,142 organisation, there are new fees headed your way. And the majority of them seem to be the $/hour type. Everything else seem to be a no-change arrangement. Interesting that CASA fee amounts/rates haven't been increased since 2007. Being new to this space, i would have thought they'd be upping that stuff every year linked to CPI or inflation or something.
  5. When i was much much younger, the bug might have started when i was introduced briefly to a remote control aircraft. It then was well and truly hooked by Microsoft Flight Simulator number 1. over numurous decades, a joy flight here and there, a "you're too tall to fly in the air force", mortgage, family and finally having 2 cents to rub together has brought me to this point. RPL down, Nav just starting, and when i'm up there you can't knock the smile off my face.
  6. Are u sure the driver wasn't a former crash test dummy at Euro NCAP, and just simply forget where they were working.
  7. i'm looking at the BBC website which has got a satellite map showing the airport and the crash site. looks like the pilot might have been aiming for the beginning of a straight stretch of river.
  8. yes, i can see your point on double quoting there. i should have clarified with while paying off your new toy at say $10K/ year, it may be depreciating in value faster than that. at some rate that exceeds your repayments. i had someone say to me once that if you went and bought a 30 year old piper/cessna, and kept it for 5 years you might be able to sell it for what you paid for it. But if you went and bought a brand new ultralight type aircraft, in 5 years you'd be lucky if it was worth half what you paid.

When i briefly toyed with the idea of Buy vs Rent while learning, these are some of the numbers i crunched for 100 hours of flying out of Canberra Park a plane at Canberra airport, outside, was either $3000 or $6000 per year...i forget now....i think it was the $6k one....as i think park in a hangar was $12k odd. 100 hourly maintenance - $2000 ish Insurance for low hour pilot - more than $1000 Fuel/oil $5000 Repayments on purchase of aircraft, say brand new $100K toy.....somewhere round $10,000 /year Depreciation....being generous at 5% / year.......$5000 Flying school charges $90/hour to teach u in your plane.....so while learning that would be another $5000 -ish all versus just hiring a plane with instructor at $150 or so per hour. one day i will buy a plane, but between now and then i will rent a variety of aircraft..... and have some affordable fun
  10. Fly as close to everyday as you can. Last year when I did my RPL, my first 20 hours were spread over nearly 5 months. Weather, availability and the like slowed it down. My next 20 hours were over 5 weeks. You really notice the difference. You forget less. You can really hone those landing skills and when it came to my RPL flying test, I'd flown 4 times that week already, including a full dry run test. Needless to say I passed. I should add I was fortunate enough to be able to do those final 20 hours while on holidays from work, and I don't have small kids either.
  11. There's no requirement to have an RPL before getting a PPL. In fact, CASA website says all you need is an ARN to go all the way up to PPL. Will you be progressing to PPL with the same flying school you've done your RAAus with ? .........if not, you might end up having to redo a written test or something.
  12. I've done my training with Canberra aviation in a piper warrior flying out of Canberra. My next batch of training should be completing the Nav endorsement in the warrior and then converting over to RA in Goulburn, maybe in the Evektor or the jabiru.
  13. Hi all, i'm Mark and I can't believe I haven't found this forum before. And I thought Google knew everything about me too. I've not long achieved my RPL (40 hours in GA) and am starting to look at the next batch of training. This one will be RA Aus and Nav certificate. Cheers.
