  1. 2010 Savannah VGW builder I completed a Savannah VGW in June 2010. My max true airspeed in level flight (100hp Rotax at 5400 RPM) is: 100 MPH - 87 Knots per hr - 160 Km per hr. This was verified by GPS in a four leg course. My single person (beginner) built time was about 800 hrs. I question the number of flying XL/VGW - 175. I have never met or talk to or heard about any other flying XL/VGW's - other than distributor demo's.
  2. T87 I am ready to start painting my Savannah XL. I am using your recommendation of washing with Alumiprep and coating with Alodine. I used one part Alumiprep to three parts water, applied with a brush and scrubbed with a sponge; wait three minutes then wash with clean water for five minutes; apply non-diluted Alodine with a brush; wait three minutes then power wash with clean water for five minutes then dry with a cotton cloth. The result is a mottled/streaked golden finish. Is it supposed to look good at this point (it do not)? It will be covered with primer and paint. I will try to add photos of the result to the photo gallery. Is this procedure acceptable? Should I make the Alumiprep more concentrated? Thanks Coolair
  3. T87 One more question. Is it OK to get Alumiprep and Alodine on the black plastic parts? Thanks, Tony
  4. Thurster87 Thank you, thank you for the information. I did not want to sand anyway. Aircraft Spruce prefers Metalprep 79 over Alumiprep 33. What's your preference? They both are the same price for me. So you do not have to clean and degrease if you use Alumiprep? Do folks ever leave the Alodine coating as the finished coat? Tony
  5. Thurster87 Thanks for your reply. What does "stress risers" mean? Why not use an etching primer? Thanks Tony
  6. I am preparing to paint my Savannah XL. The EAA recommends wet sanding the skin with 320 grit sand paper prior to priming. Opinions? If I do sand, how do I sand the area close to the rivets. In regular sanding the space around the rivets does not get sanded. Don't even mention individually sanding each rivet. Tony Denver, CO
  7. I am a new Member, I am a retired electrical engineer living in Golden, Colorado. I have many flying hours but never flown an owner built airplane. I expect delivery of a Savannah VG-wide kit in January 2009. I plan to optimized it for short-rough fields. Cruise speed will not be important. I have a Cessna T210 for speedy trips. I would like to hear suggestions to improve short field performance. I already know about using long propellers. The kit comes with a Rotax 912 100 hp engine and a three bladed Kiev prop. I do not plan to use a different engine. I do not plan to get a Rotax 914. Happy New Year, Tony Welcome Tony, A fellow by the call sign of Redair on this forum is building a Savannah he may have some ideas, he is in South Australia. What does the 210 cruise at and I figure T means it is Turbo? is it pressurized as well ? Hope to get over to Oshkosh this year! See what happens, don't even have a passport yet ! Cheers Guy Guy Thanks for the response. Yes, the "T" means turbo. I live at 2225 m elevation (7300 ft), thus the turbo. The T210 cruises around 175 kts. Mine is not pressurized. I will be happy with my Savannah if it cruises at only 50 kts as long as it can take off in 100 m (300 feet) at 2500 m (8000 feet) on a rough field. Good luck on your trip to Oshkosh. Tony
