  1. Hi

Quick question, can an RA 19 registered plane be converted over to VH?

This would be a plane using factory plans, approved engine such as Rotax 912 or Jabiru?

The reason why I ask is that there are a number of very capable 19 registered planes that I like but my requirement is to fly into controlled airspace etc.

  2. I only came to know John a few weeks ago when arranging a BFR in Weightshift. We had a lovely conversation when we found we had a common denominator in that I used to fly a Mainair Flash II Alpha and John flew this same aircraft years ago across the English Channel on several occasions. I was so looking forward to meeting John in January to hear more of his adventures.

Rest in Peace and my sincere condolences to his family.

  3. Depending on which certificate you hold (HGFA or RAAus) ha ve you checked the websites for trainign schools?RAAus:

    QLD - RAAus

From this it looks like Rockhampton is the closest

Or if you are HGFA then:

    HGFA Schools

and your closest looks to be Cairns or Mareeba

Ah thanks. I'm looking for RA-Aus. I'm set to go to Caboolture but was wondering if there is anyone closer. It's a shame Oak Valley is no more in terms of training.

  4. Wing Washing & Protection

    Hi

I'm wondering what trike pilots use to wash down their microlight wings. It seems the manufacturers warn of anything other than water.

Any ideas would be very appreciated.

    Ammendment......

I forgot to ask... is there any solution that you can use to act as a UV protectant too?

Also, what strength napisan do you use? Thanks

  5. Changing Wings

    Hi

This is getting similar to a thread which I started a few months ago http://www.recreationalflying.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1620

You would probably have to re-register your trike as a single seater only as it is no longer standard manufacturer design if you change a wing.

I think the Streak wing has a greater surface area and needs a lot more grunt to keep it in level flight.

Can't believe how slow the Wizard wing is... 39kt. I have a Flash 2a wing and it cruises along at 45kt hands off and with easy bar-in it can do 53kt or more. This is with a rotax 462 at 8 litres per hour!

  6. Electrical probs

    Thanks MicGrace,

The water temp gauge flickering was solely due to a very poor magneto to engine earthing point.

I had a look at the electrical carb heat and the wiring is a *** mess under all the plastic heat shielding. I'm going to rip it out and restore it back to standard wiring without battery.

Just one question, with the 2 phase (4 wires) coming out from the magneto, are both coils joined together in parallel which then feed the rectifier/regulator?

And one very last question, how on earth does the water temp gauge get a reading from the AC side of the magneto? The tacho I can understand but I thought water temp gauges need probes like the EGT and CGT does.

    Regards,

  7. Power to Radio

    Hi,

I just use a 12v DC battery purchased from any hobby shop for $20 and a charger for it @ $10 from the same type of shop.

Then go to Dick Smiths and buy some red and black cable, a power plug that goes into the side of your radio, a 1 amp fuse and fuse holder and a on/off switch plus some electrical conector terminals with crimper (unless you know someone with these already) - they aren't expensive.

Then just wire red cable from +ve terminal of battery to fuse holder, then from fuse to switch, then from switch to power plug (for radio) and with black cable from power plug back to -ve terminal of battery. Also it would be good to add an earth from -ve terminal of battery to airframe.

This way you shouldn't experience any dangers of spikes etc as the battery is completely isolated from the main charging circuit of the magneto.

It would also lessen the chances of interference also.

These solid black hand size batteries last hours and hours per charge running my radio, intercom and headsets etc.

  8. Hi,

I found that Repco can get gearbox oil for you. My Rotax 462 gearbox needs EPX85W/140 and you can get this in Castrol 4 litres @$40 or Valvolene in a 1 litre bottle @$11.

  9. Hi,

Don't know if anyone can help.

A new aircraft to me has problems with water temp and tacho guages. The tacho sometimes works accurately but mostly won't go above 4000 revs even with foot to floor (Engine absolutely fine). Usually on take-off the water temp guage flickers wildly and settles at cruise speed.

Maybe after a landing, the tacho would read the true revs and on go around read past 4000 revs.

The previous owner said an auto-electrician wired a battery to a 12v supply cable coming out of the rectifier but the prev. owner disconnected the lot as it kept burning out the battery. He also said that he had also experienced problems with flickering water guage etc but if he switched on carb heat, it all corrected and both guages read true. He also flew all the time with carb heat switched on.

My findings today with a voltmeter are as follows with engine running:

With carb heat off: water & tacho guages read a little low and tacho wouldn't read above 4000 revs. Also the 12v supply lead read about 12.9volts.

With carb heat on: water and tacho guages both increase slightly and interestingly that 12v lead jumps from 12.x to way past 20 volts! This explains the burned out battery scenario!

So I think it could be a duff magneto, regulator/rectifier unit or both.

    Could this be so?

  10. Time to be SHOCKED!!!

    Hi

Earlier in this thread I was asking about placing a local wing on a European trike to save considerable money without affecting safety or performance etc.

The answer was most definitely not!

    But wait.....

Look what some chap has done to his Airborne Edge....

Now this is radical. I don't think RAAus would want to know this aircraft for sure!

  11. 'Topless Wings'

    Hi Paul,

Just curious as to what these so called 'topless wings' are.

It looks like my hands are tied up here with changing to different manufacturer's wing etc. Shame, but that's progress I guess!

  12. BMAA

    Hi Pete,

Hmm, I might see what the UK BMAA says about this. But then I doubt so much that UK microlight owners would have such similar problems unless they fly non European microlights.

If I get any news, I'll post it in this thread.

  13. Re Skyranger

    Hi,

So you like the Skyranger - did you build it yourself? Was it difficult? Would you say it was a trully trailerable aircraft (I.e quick and easy to fold/remove wings and put back together again). What kind of cruise speed do you get/engine?

    Thanks,

    Azhar

    Sorryyou did specify trike undercart

both the Aeropup and the Superpup have their taxi wheel on the back
