About Me

  1. Anybody here own or fly a Pelican PL or know where I can get some main landing gear legs for one? They were a Canadian kit years back and since been taken over by Ballard Sport Aircraft in Quebec - have had no luck e-mailing or calling them Home
  2. Good Morning, I am posting to invite pilots who are interested in furthering the current research and focus on Human Factors to take part in a survey. Pilots of any category (Military, GA, Civil, Recreational, Student, Commercial) and any flight hours are invited to take part in this short (10-15min) survey looking into Emotional Intelligence and Decision Making in high-consequence situations. If there is interest, I would be happy to post a results document after the research has concluded. Link to Survey: https://rmit.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eKCI7qGo6yJDuDP I am happy to chat a
  3. Any ideas please on the most suitable lubricant to help fit bungee rings. I'm replacing mine again, and want to make them slide easier around the mounts as they are stretched - no easy task as each ring has a test load of 1160 lbs (527 Kg) and they are doubled up around the mounting pegs. Current thinking is tyre bead mounting paste, but am not sure about its long-term effects on the rubber strands and cotton covering of the rings.
  4. Considering purchase of the Aera 660, have read many reviews etc which are mainly overseas ones. The vendors here simply publish the Garmin blurb and nothing relative to Australia. I am interested in subscription costs etc which I believe is Jepessen? ADSB in is available as a Garmin accessory but I was wondering IF the new Skyecho unit would connect to the 660? I know people use iPads etc to do a similar job with Avplan etc etc, but I want a stand alone dedicated solution. Any help appreciated.
  5. Can anyone suggest where can I get this hose from? it has an internal diameter of 25mm and joins the oil cooler to radiator on a Rotax 912ULS engine. This is a non-Rotax part. I've tried the OEM and Samco Sport but there is a 5 week wait for freight from UK. Thanks in advance!
  6. Which way to you bend a fixed rudder trim tab to counter excessive right rudder? Meaning right rudder is required (right foot down) to maintain stable straight flight. I guess it could be viewed that there is excessive left rudder and right rudder is required to correct it? A bit confused.....
  7. Is it just me, or does it appear that Bestoff Aircraft (as a result Skyranger aircraft) web site no longer exists in Australia?
  8. Does anyone know of a business capable of repairing a hand held radio? I have a Vertex VXA-150, which wouldn't turn on one day. Battery good, but screen blank and no noise. The couple of firms I have contacted only want to sell me a new radio and I already have two handhelds, the other one works but not well.
  9. Is it too late to be flying in the Kimberleys this time of year? Looking at heading up to Kununurra next week, so late September. I know it's hot but mainly worried about turbulence. I will probably do some local early morning flights and drive around but getting there will be two full days flying. I don't mind flying high (9500) but I've still been smashed by thermal at that height before.
  10. Did anybody see the recent article going around about the 3D printed aircraft. parts of my designed aircraft will have printed parts in load bearing areas. Has anybody on this site made load bearing parts for aircraft? If so what experiences have you had?
  11. I have created a proposed Home Page for the site and have a few concerns about it so I would very much value your opinion on it before I turn it on. You can see it at https://www.recreationalflying.com/index.html/ Does it load fast enough? Is it too cluttered? Is it missing something? Each section has too many entries or not enough entries? Is the layout right and the different sections in the right order? Is there enough importance placed on the right sections like centre or side column? etc etc etc Please post your comments and also remember there are still several more components t
  12. Just wondering what value the "brains trust" put on factory built aircraft - compared with the same unit, kit built ? So this is a question about perceived value, ability to train & hire - it is not about build quality etc etc
  13. Looking at the site statistics today and I am alarmed at an obvious downward trend. The number of "registered" users coming to the site every day seems to be maintained at an average of around 250 to 275 per day however years ago we were averaging 600 registered users per day peaking at up to 1,000 (the graph peaks are a result of the weekly email that goes out). I believe this drop is caused purely by Facebook. But what is concerning is the huge downward trend in the number of posts per day. This could be caused by Covid-19 but I would have thought that the numbers would increase given that e

This happens when the plastic separator fails and lets the anode and cathode touch. ... In some models, when the battery expanded a little as it charged, th
  15. Hi All I am putting it out there to see if anyone has a aileron rigging jig for the CA25 Skyfox gazelle? Physical one i can borrow, a set of drawings to make one or a lead on more info? Cheers
  16. Here's a red herring for people who want to discuss the development of electric motors as power plants for aircraft. We normally think of electric motors for aircraft as being basically the same as electric motors we use everywhere. The fundamental purpose of the vast majority of the world's electric motors is to electromagnetically induce relative movement in an air gap between a stator and rotor to produce useful torque or linear force. The moving part is the rotor, which turns the shaft to deliver the mechanical power. The rotor has conductors laid into it that carry current
  17. I'm considering buying an aircraft with 100HP, 912 UL engine. The Rotax airbox has been removed & replaced with two separate air cleaner type fittings. I've read that the Rotax needs its specifically designed airbox, without it, the engine won't develop full HP. Can anyone either confirm or rubbish this theory? Thanks
  18. I'm studying for my RPL exam and I have had conflicting information regarding the law for unlicensed passengers to manipulate the control in any way during the flight. Although in the VFRG it says that non part 61 compliant personnel shall not touch the controls of the aircraft. However, I've also heard pilots say that if you're the PIC, you are allowed to authorize passengers to fly the aircraft but responsibility lies with the PIC. Could someone confirm this?
  19. Hi All, Does anyone know any places to land that are pleasant enough to land at and have a bite to eat? Especially if there's some shade, and a safe place for the kids to have a run around to stretch their legs. I'm in Central West NSW, so suggestions vaguely near to me appreciated but I'm sure others would be interested Australia wide. Crookwell is scenic, but it's BYO shade and no loo. Narromine has a fenced area near apron with a covered picnic table. Khancoban has some lovely big trees and a toilet Thanks, Tom
  20. Online entry ticket buyers to Airventure 19 were entered into a raffle. The prize was the Bushcat that the students built at the show. Does anyone know where the winner of the raffle was announced?
  21. I'm interested in long range tip tanks for my rv7 project after seeing some 25L per side ones in an rv6. I live pretty remote and envisage missions like flying out a thousand km for clearing sales and back again. Saving me finding fuel in the wheat belt. The ones I can find are from hotel whiskey aviation. About $2k aud plus freight. I'm told there may be someone making them in Australia. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  22. We buy bulk 98 fuel , usually 600lts , pumped into a 1200 lt fuel tank that l use compressed air to fill bikes , mowers and my plane, just found out the supplier doesn’t use a dedicated petrol tank on the truck but supposedly drains any previous diesel out and then fills with my 98 , wondering how much diesel would end up in my fuel , been using this fuel for 10 years so l guess it’s okay
  23. Let’s hear from the most informed amongst us. Does a 3 blade prop perform better than a 2 blade , I am looking for a little better climb rate and yes I can loose weight and that will help. Let’s hear some facts that would encourage a poor and struggling pilot spend the hard earned to the purchase a Performance improver. I am happy with all facets of the planes performance except take off performance. Which I think is asthmatic to say the least.
  24. Hi, I'm a new pilot and have acquired an aircraft with a Jab 2200A engine. It has done 316hrs so far and the log books look very thorough. Just after people's thoughts, experiences, and possible things I may need to be aware of with this engine.
  25. Just looking at the MSN photos of thecrashed and burnt Citation that had the retired race driver and family on board and the fuselage seems to have some sort of mesh left after it has burnt. I just wonder what sort of structure the fuselage has, is it a carbo fibre composite? Apparently something flammable.
