About Me

  1. I think it is time to revisit the site, its function, its capability, its service to all recreational aviators. Time to perhaps look at a Wish List of what the site could perhaps deliver/provide you all...so how about it, what would you like to put on the Wish List? I will start although derived from a specific user's request: Aviation Book List - details about the many different books written about aviation Aviation Movie List - details about the many different movies concerning aviation Plain English Weather Converter After all, I am stuck here in Melbourne in lock down so it will g
  2. After some control cable (for a homebuilt project) what are the recommendations.
  3. How to put SOLD on a classified?? AND How come I must login when answering a classified enquiry (problem when lost password)??
  4. Hi All: There is a Rotax 912 ULS for sale in the Classifieds it has (to my eye/experience) two unusual features that some of you may be able to explain; Cooling, oil & fuel hoses that look like flexible metal ?? Muffler that looks to be about 1/4 the size of a standard Rotax and flat on the bottom??
  5. Ref: Rotax 912 ULS - As per Rotax recommendation, I have been using Castrol Radicool Concentrate (& its direct predecessor) for 10 years & 900+ hours - no problems everything as you would want. In the interim I have a acquired a 2013 Ford Ranger PX, 3.2L - It has a very long life coolant installed by Ford. Recommend replacement coolant is Castrol Radicool SF-O. Because I am an obsessive personality it has always "bugged" me that I am not changing the coolant in my Ranger when I do a major service. The irritation has finally overwhelmed the advice from Ford (from memory 10 years serv
  6. Hi All, Can someone please tell me where can I buy this exhuast spring? it is fitted to a Rotax 912ULS engine - It is not a Rotax original part however came with the new engine. They are starting to look a little sad and wanted to replace. I refuse to use the Rotax springs as they frequently snap. Thanks in advance, Andrew
  7. Attention Brains Trust: Seeking comments on Europa XS LOVE? UNDECIDED ? HATE ? Constructive observation from experienced persons?
  8. I can not respond to messages through the Forum because I have forgotten my password. I go into "forgotten password" fill out the application. System asks for words from "AVATAR" big PROBLEMO no avatar !! Can go no further (Hope Rosco is reading this - sorry mate did try to help.
  9. Hi all, I'm doing my 5 yearly Rotax rubber replacement and could anyone please tell me where can I get a replacement hose to this black ribbed style coolant hose? (pictures attached) it has an internal diameter of 1 inch and wall is 4mm wide. It looks like straight heater hose but it needs to handle 130' Celcius (unlike car radiator hoses which are only good for 80-90'C). I am thinking that silicone type hoses are the way to go due their high temperature tolerance and excellent ageing characteristics. Unfortunately I am unable to get this hose from Bert Floods as it is a non-Rotax part. Th
  10. We are interested to know the best and the least helpful experiences you've had with your aircraft manufacturer. This is a very short survey. If you are the 24th or the 100th person to complete the form, we'll send you $100. Manufacturer Survey Thanks Stuart
  11. Gday all. I did my first flight today. It was in a FK9 MkIV. Typic 2 seater trainer from Germany. Just wondering if anyone else is training in one? And what do you think of it as you go further down the training path. It was my first flight in it, but seemd to be nice enough to fly. Cheers Craig
  12. Hey all, So, I am not a conspiracy junky by any stretch, but can someone explain why the Cape Preston airport has been rubbed out of google maps? (YCPR) I went to show a mate today, and it's gone! And you can clearly see where Google has patched the map. FYI - This is the AD that Clive Palmer was banging on about. Hmm... Very strange indeed!!!
  13. Has anyone had experience using Loctite style locking of aircraft bolts? What type of locking did the Loctite style glues replace? Nylon, metal crimp, wire, split pin?
  14. Looking for advice I noticed a Cherokee for sale with about 300 hours remaining before hitting TBO hours. However it recently had a full "Bulk Strip" incluing new bearings, gaskets, camshaft, internal bore etc at a cost of $10k (which was roughly half labour). The comment from the seller was "The engine can go past the TBO for all ops other than Charter which I doubt you will need. Especially as it has had a recent extensive overhaul. We can't understand why it was not zero timed at the overhaul." For the purposes of comparing other aircraft for sale, how much life in hours woul
  15. Just wondering if anyone has an old 912 fuel pump laying around. I don't want the pump, but am after the screw in inlet fitting with the hose tail on it. Happy to pay reasonable price and shipping. PM if you've got anything you want to part with.
  16. Does anyone in the experience trust know where to buy the rubber donuts that are inside the front gear leg of a Skyfox Gazelle? Front strut leg is a bit clunky. I don't have a picture. Thanks in advance
  17. Would love to see your instrument panel set ups! Post some pics, and maybe list what instruments if its hard to make out. I'm interested in steam gauge type setups. Not too interested (and cant afford!) glass cockpit setups. Also, what are peoples thoughts on the essentials. For instance, I virtually never look at the VSI. I was thinking I would be naughty for not fitting one, but on another thread somewhere someone pointed out that on an RA-AUS plane its not really needed. In which case I wouldn't feel bad leaving it out, AND my wallet would feel ok about it too ?
  18. I've recently been thinking about storage and interior design in my aircraft. It got me to thinking about stuff I routinely carry when I fly, some of which is quite odd. We all fly for different purposes, in different regions, and in different aircraft and so the stuff we prioritise to carry will reflect these differences. For example, I always carry a 1m step ladder in the back of my aircraft. I selected it for its light weight. Obviously, I use this for refuelling. Im a tall bloke, but the Rebel's wings are still over my head. I once met an old timer who swore he never flew any
  19. Next month we have the RAA Board Elections. The candidate profiles are in the current Sports Pilot magazine and there are contact numbers and email addresses. I am emailing questions to the candidates and deciding for whom I am going to vote. Overall I think the current management have done a good job of furthering the RAA and member interests, but there could be more cooperation and engagement with the rest of the aviation community's interests. Also the small but annoying distractions like the "freedom to fly" registration were not welcome and a sign of either management judgment error or hu
  20. I am currentlt visiting the US and was wondering whether my RAAUS qualifications are recognized here. Also was wondering what qualification rec pilots have here. Is it like we have in Oz, a "pilot certificate" or do rec pilots here just have PPLs? Would any Americans on the forum care to have a stab at this?
  21. Just curious about those of you who have built their Nynja. What was your experience with the kit? Did you enjoy building it? Were there many parts missing/ wrong size etc? How was the manual? Easy to follow or did you have to contact the factory a lot? How was the customer service when you contacted them? Asking for a 'friend' ?
  22. Is any one with a 914 interested in a set of Sodium Valves to suit their engine? Rotax is recommending that the valves be changed at overhaul but I am sure non one could afford them - try and get a price. I have made contact with a manufacturer engine valves that has Rotax blanks for sodium valves and based on a quote about 18 months ago a order for 24 would be $1K for four. Standard Rotax exhaust vales are about $US300 each so the price in good. I will fun the purchase with a deposit of 30% non refundable if order is cancelled. Would need 3 buyers outside myself Credits card is
  23. In a country of 25 million people who tend to live a 24/7 lifestyle, does Australia really need to be operating on three time zones? Would it be more convenient for the economic life of such a relatively small population for everyone to operate on the same time? It might have been important in the past when life tended to follow a "rise with the Sun" regime, but with lighting at one's fingertips and instantaneous communication, does the position of the Sun in the sky matter any more? Our present time zones do make conducting business inconvenient. Workers on the east coast can't contact the
  24. So.... Here's a question... How many of us out there use the circuit correctly. As in, when you arrive at an AD, you go through the motions of joining the circuit properly? I ask because I live near an AD where lots of aircraft blast in from anywhere and just land. Circuits are to the left, but even today, 2 aircraft flew what I would consider a weird angle from the right and just landed. Add to that - not many use the radio around here LOL! So it got me thinking... how many of us do the same thing? I personally like to fly over the AD, spot the windsock, and make sure I am g
  25. I’ve read the Rotax manual and know the max temps and so on but I’m chasing actual in field CHT temps. At what point would you start to think the engine is getting on the warm side? I’ve just installed a 912 and only have 2.1 flight hours on the (second hand) engine. I’ve only ever flown Rotax’s before mainly in Tecnam’s where they run nice and cool. What temps do people usually see in flight and climb? Thanks ?
