About Me

  1. I'm sure someone here can enlighten me on this, and apologies if it is a really dumb question, but I have not spent any flying time in the RAA world (yet). I am somewhat bemused by the information on the Jabiru website regarding the MTOWs of their J230/J430. If I were to buy a factory-built J230, it appears the MTOW is 600kg, which I assume is because they want it to fit into RAA parameters. If I buy a J230 kit, same deal. But if I buy a J430 kit, the MTOW is suddenly 760kg. Hang on - is this not the EXACT same airframe as the J230?? Does this mean that a J430 has to be VH registered?
  2. Hi everyone, Been a while since I've posted on here so hopefully putting this in the right place. I'm in the process of looking to purchase an aeroplane (GA). Said aeroplane has a Lycoming O-235-C1 (115hp) and this would be its 3rd installation with the engine TT being 2500ish hours. There is a record of major repair/overhaul occurring at this point. The engine logbook now states it has 2000hrs remaining. This overhaul took place ~20 years ago so the 12 year calendar life has expired and the engine is now "on condition". To my actual question, the cylinder pressures range from 60psi t
  3. I always thought that the carburettors fitted to the Rotax 900 range were altitude compensating (auto adjust) to at least 8,000 ft - perhaps not as precisely/accurately as one might like but a fair compromise never the less. I recently read a comment, by Ivan Shaw, where he categorically states that the Bing carburettors, as fitted to Rotax 912 range, are not altitude compensating. Did a little additional reserch, only to find the exact opposite statement from other authoritative figures. So whats it to be:: Are they altitude compensating? To some degree? If so to what altitude
  4. Hi folks Just dropped off my IPad today for its hunderd hourly and oil change. Bloke told me there was insufficient available memory to do necessary updates... and that he needed to kill some programs to create space. He looked and found that OzRunways was the app using the most space ( all those maps loaded I guess). My subscription has expired and I need to renew. So I told him he could go ahead and wipe the app and associated files. Did I do wrong? If I resubscribe to OzRunways i download everything again, right? Please tell me I haven't stuffed up... Alan
  5. Hey all, So I have never really noticed this until I started doing my own maintenance, and one step is to measure how much force it takes to pull the prop through, and noticed recently that if the bird has sat for a month or so, the prop pulls through really easy. What I am saying is... when I turn up at the hangar and pull the prop through 5 or 6 times to burp the oil, she is really easy to pull through. If I do the same thing after i go flying, she is a lot firmer. Is this normal? My LAME seems to thing it's OK. She runs fine. Burns no oil, and is smooth. She is a 912 ULS 2008
  6. Hi Folks, As Bert Floods are no longer selling NGK B8ES Spark Plugs, can someone please tell me where to buy them from? NOTE they need to have un-screwable tips, the ones at car shops only sell solid posts which are too big to connect to high tension lead cap. Thanks.
  7. Hi Everyone I'm new to this forum. I have a Question for everyone and anyone who will help answer this, How may hours did it take you to finish your RPL and what was the sticking point, or the tricky part for you? Thanks in advance Adrian.
  8. I am thinking about bringing back the Never Ending Story to Recreational Flying. For those that don't know what it is, it is a single thread with users adding posts that add to the previous post but leaves the end of their post open to someone else to reply to thus creating a never ending story. If you would like to have a look at it, it is at: https://www.whatsupaustralia.com.au/threads/the-never-ending-story.510/ It sort of died down when I moved the Off Topic funnies over to the Off Topic site Whats Up Australia. It is a real laugh as almost anything goes and most often it is a funny
  9. Hi all. I’m very much a newbie and am only now beginning to stretch my wings and fly further and further from home. I fly an RV7A. In my planning, I don’t yet have the experience to know the airfield names or acronyms that are the most suitable to use when heading to large centres - eg if I was heading to Melbourne, where would I go to to find that it was either Essendon (YMEN) or Moorabbin (YMMB)? Is there a GA aircraft Airfield reference point somewhere or is it simply learn through experience/asking? Thanks in advance, Geoff (YBSS)
  10. Hi I have about 500 hrs on my Rotax 912 and recently on startup it one of the magnetos is dead for about one minute and then comes good. Has anyone heard of this or had this issue? Any pointers would be appreciated! Thanks Friarpuk
  11. Was wake turbulence a factor in ? What do you think? ASHEVILLE, North Carolina - On Saturday, December 28, 2019, a Piper PA-32RT crashed approximately one-quarter mile east of the airport as it was taking off from Runway 17, and was partially consumed by fire adjacent to the Asheville Regional Airport, Asheville, North Carolina. Thankfully, all five people on board were able to exit the plane and were not seriously injured, according to an Emergency Services spokesman. The Piper took off immediately following American Airlines flight 5319. The Air Traffic Control Tower warned the Piper
