Queensland Music Festival partners with Opera Queensland for this festival favourite, Opera at Jimbour.

Now one of Queensland’s truly iconic musical performances, Opera at Jimbour attracts audiences in their thousands to the fantastic location of Jimbour Station. Where else can you picnic with a magnificent sandstone mansion in the background, listening to opera!

In 2017, Opera at Jimbour will be a semi-staged presentation of Franz Lehár’s bubbly operetta The Merry Widow (Die Lustige Witwe) featuringthe irrepressible Emily Burke in the title role, and Australia’s favourite leading man David Hobson as Count Danilo.

They will be joined by Hayley Sugars and Virgilio Marino as secret lovers Camille and Valencienne, and some of Queensland’s leading opera performers, with the Queensland Conservatorium Orchestra and Opera Queensland’s Toowoomba Community Chorus.

The Merry Widow is the fabulously wealthy Hannah Glawari, a former commoner who has been left a huge fortune by her aristocratic, recently deceased husband. Now back in her impoverished home country, she finds herself the center of attention for dozens of suitors (but not the one she truly desires, her bad-boy ex, Count Danilo). Eventually Hannah makes Danilo bury his pride and admit he’s still in love with her, and on a magical night in Paris, the two fall into each other’s arms…

The Merry Widow is full of romance and wonderful popular melodies including “Vilia”, “You’ll Find Me at Maxim’s”, and the haunting “Merry Widow Waltz”.

And this year we want you all to sing! Be there for a pre – show rehearsal, learn the words and music, and join in the “Vilia” chorus. And following the success of Fledermaus in 2015, there’ll be another chance to waltz the afternoon away in the world’s biggest ballroom!

Pack your picnic basket, warm up your vocal chords, put on your dancing shoes and enjoy your trip to the picturesque Western Downs. There’s no event quite like Opera at Jimbour.

MARKET STALLS

Gates open from 10am showcasing a huge array of local and visiting stallholders offering locally produced foods, wines and other beverages, handcrafted items and artisan wares. Please note this is a licensed event, so no BYO alcohol is permitted, but visitors may bring their own picnics.

Roving performers will be entertaining the crowd throughout the day, and event-goers are free to take in the sights of the majestic Jimbour Homestead and surrounding gardens before the show.

Great day was had by all 2,000 plus people who attended this bi annual event at this superb venue and airstrip. 15 planes full of people arrived to enjoy the ambience and the performance, and were welcomed by the local mayor Paul M'c Veigh at the proceedings.

We flew to Dalby tonight before we head to Warwick tomorrow fo attend the Aero club breakfast and Jumpers and Jazz Festival.

As usual the photos say it all.
