Landed at Jandakot today. Not that unusual, as I've done it many times before in various Cessna's. However this was the first time in the RV-12. I'm based at Serpentine, and given the rarity of this aircraft on this side of the country, I'm pretty sure that it's the first time that Jandakot ATC has ever heard: "Jandakot tower, Vans RV-12 light sport, six south, one thousand five hundred, received Foxtrot, inbound". Winds were 20/25 kts with max 15kts crosswind, but fortunately the landing was fine. Parked on the grass in front of the RACWA building where I started my training 6 years ago, and enjoyed a cup of coffee in the upstairs lounge. Took off again for YSEN. I've been looking forward to making this flight for the last 4 1/2 years, so it was a good day!

Mike:Yes, getting some nice flights done, but also some short stuff. Took a friendly local flying instructor up the other day; he's looking for a replacement for an aging Tecnam. In doing that, I discovered how my landings have slipped into long GA type powered approaches instead of the nice glide approaches that I was taught. So yesterday I did some circuits and started getting my landings back in shape. We did a good flight up to Double Island Point a few weeks back too. The Legend is now due for its first 25hr service.

We're planning a trip out through the centre of Oz in April/May next year. Out to Ayers Rock then down south and back up the coast. I'm not sure whether we'll make The Old Station, but if we do, we'll catch up there.

Nice flying weather this morning and set off for a nav cross country with my local instructor, enjoyed and learnt more things. May have the XC finished after next solo. (1 or 2 will do it.)

Straddie Christmas Breakie, was another big hit with 50 plus aircraft arriving, plus a birthday party for Douglas Mc Cullough.

Thanks again Pat and your team for another Top Event.

Apart from a very short trip 2 weeks ago I hadn't flown for about 4 weeks. Many reasons for that. Work, weather, Ross's accident, my own mindset. On the few times that I ventured to the airfield with the thought of maybe going up the weather was unkind. Well on Friday the forecast was good and work was quiet so I told my daughter not to ring me and if it got busy find another Subbie and I ran away to go for a fly. Well I had a ball. Out over Moreton Island with the plan to head down to Q1 for a quick loop of the Gold Coast and then home. There was a rain squall over Straddie so I decided to just circumnavigate Moreton and Bribie Islands then a quick loop of the Glass House Mountains and home. All up about 2 hours.

Well after enjoying myself so much on Friday I decided to repeat the dose on Sat with another attempt on the Gold Coast and Q1. Well the weather again smiled on me. So off I went. As I left Caboolture I noticed a huge number of aircraft about for that time of morning. It soon became apparent that Dunwich had their monthly flyin breakfast on. Well I had to fly straight over Dunwich to get to Q1 didn't I and a man has to eat after all so I stopped in for a very yummy breakfast before completing my trip to Q1 and back. As I gave my 10 mile call into Dunwich, there were 5 other aircraft that I was aware of inside the 10 miles plus another 4 or 5 in the circuit. There were 3 or 4 more gave 10 mile calls within minutes of mine, so it was not surprising to learn that there where in excess of 40 aircraft arrived for Breakky.

Then yesterday afternoon at the local flying school Christmas party one of the guys mentioned a breakfast at Chinchilla today. Well as I already said a man has to eat doesn't he. So off I went out into the wide blue to support our country cousins with a donation to the food tin. Another lovely day with its own set of challenges. It is the first time I had been out that way and Oakey had been deactive so I decided to come back via overflying Oakey for a look then onto Toowoomba and home.

So all in all 3 days flying for a shade under 10 hours on the clock. It was an enjoyable few days doing something I love and overcoming what appears now to have been a temporary block on my own confidence. Next time I go up I will concentrate more on emergency procedures and less on just fun even though I must admit I do enjoy practicing all aspects of flying including the emergency drills. The only shadow on a great 3 days was taking off from Dunwich on 15 with the heavily wooded hill climbing away as steeply as I was climbing. An engine out there would take serious concentration to land straight ahead, I had taken that into account on landing and mentally briefed myself before taking off on procedures more so than I may have a month ago.

I am giving serious consideration to maybe looking into doing some unusual attitude recovery training in the near future, although I am not sure how I will handle that. I do not go on ride the turn me upside down so my attitude may become short lived once I get into the aircraft.

I would never go on the Big Dipper at Lunar Park.

Nice flying weather this morning and set off for a nav cross country with my local instructor, enjoyed and learnt more things. May have the XC finished after next solo. (1 or 2 will do it.)

Yesterday (Sunday) I completed my solo nav to Bowen in the Nynja, 92 n/mls each way and set the cruise IAS speed at 80 kts up and 88 back with the head wind effect. (1.1 hrs up and 1.3 return) Had a pleasant flight to Bowen and a good run home with cloud building all the time. Some images attached to show the area.

Cheers Mike and have a merry Xmas at the end of the week.

What's the lever with the blue golf ball for?080_plane.gif.36548049f8f1bc4c332462aa4f981ffb.gifNice photos BTW.

Its the throttle lever, one each side. Had the choice of lever or push pull and choose the lever type as every one is happy with then and very easy to adjust the friction.

Cheers

Hi Geoff, here is a good school at Redcliffe to do your unusual attitude training with, they specialise in this subject.

You could also get your tail wheel endorsement while you are at it.

Will drop there card under your hangar door today.

Yesterday I had an enjoyable paragliding flight at Fairhaven, at the start of the Great Ocean Road. After getting a bit bored hanging around the takeoff hill I started exploring to the west. Managed to climb to relatively low cloudbase (orographic coastal cloud) and continue on to Lorne.

Don't have any pretty pictures of my last two flights, so you'll have to put up with a description. Talk about chalk and cheese. First one was supposed to be on Boxing Day from Cessnock to Mt Beauty. Sydney weather beautiful, southern weather not so (wife was driving down the same day and said the rain was so heavy she couldn't see the traffic in front of her on the highway and the lightning was spectacular). Following day, southern weather lovely, Cessnock weather crap.

I had two choices; out west and then turn left, or down through Sydney and across past Canberra. Area forecast had high winds and turbulence down the coast, and clear weather out west, so I took the western route. Area had cloud bottoms at 1000', so that should have been OK for the half hour to get out from underneath. Unfortunately, someone forgot to tell the clouds, and I'd barely got to Singleton before they were down to 500. Damn. Back to YCNK. Re-re-check the weather. Area had just done a new update indicating that things would clear in a few hours, so by watching the rain radars and checking with my son back home, I was able to leave and take the Sydney route only an hour and a half later. What a ride. Bumpy as hell under the cloud, but even when I cleared Sydney airspace, it was still too solid to climb through. Just as it was breaking up, I had the Canberra steps coming up, so I still couldn't climb...

Finally (finally!), I cleared Canberra and started to climb to clean air, only to find that the cloud bottoms were at 6,500, and the tops were at 8,500. As I was on an 'evens' track, I had to suck it up and go back under the clouds again until I got a clear run for the last 30 miles into Tumut, and thence to YMBT. Stopped at Tumut for a splash of fuel, and demolished a couple of sandwiches; it had been just too rough to eat and fly and it was now mid afternoon.

By comparison, I took a mate for a late afternoon mosey around the Victorian alps today and it was smooth and the views spectacular (albeit somewhat hazy) and we were in no hurry to be anywhere or do anything. Just magic, and wouldn't miss it for quids! :)
