Afghan Air Force A-29 Super Tucanos and MD 530F Cayuse Warrior Helicopters in action. U.S. Service members from the Train, Advise, Assist, Command-Air (TAAC-Air) fly Afghan Air Force A-29 Super Tucanos & MD 530F Cayuse Warrior Helicopters to a range in Afghanistan to demonstrate the aircraft's close air support ability in support of Operation Resolute Support.

The A-29 Super Tucano is a turboprop aircraft designed for light attack, counter insurgency, close air support, aerial reconnaissance missions in low threat environments, as well as providing pilot training. Designed to operate in high temperature and humidity conditions in extremely rugged terrain, the Super Tucano is highly maneuverable, has a low heat signature, incorporates fourth generation avionics and weapons system to deliver precision guided munitions.

The MD 530F Cayuse Warrior is an armed variant of the OH-6 Cayuse light observation helicopter built by MD Helicopters. The multipurpose armed helicopter enhances scout attack, armed escort and close air attack capabilities of the Afghan Air Force.

The Afghan Air Force deployed MD 530F helicopters in the Rotary Wing Flight Training Programme since 2011. The programme was conducted by the US Army Security Assistance Training Management Organization in Shindand.

I was talking to an RAAF guy early last year & he told me there is a push for Australia to aquire a small number of Super Tucano's for use in the Forward Air Controller role. Much more sense than using a mega $$$ F-35 if we ever get them operational.

They (Super Tucano's) wouldn't replace the F35 but might replace the PC9. I sure as hell would not want to go into battle with a single engine fighter, let alone fly it half way round the world.

Apparently as the F-35 is supposed to be so multi purpose there was some thinking it would be used as an FAC. The guys carrying out the FAC role would much prefer the Super Tucano.
