Not-Kosh 2018 Proposal ...

So with all the mumblings about Oz Kosh I thought what would be a good thing it would be if there happened to be a non-event not happen.

 

Just a casual fly-in that happens to be mentioned around the traps, and vendors who just happened to be passing by at the time.

 

Some food vendors might just happen to be there, some toilets might just happen to be there, there could be a number of co-incidences happen.

 

What a nice time of the year March-April is too that is 6 months away from Oz Kosh.

 

Wagga/Griffith area is a good split for Syd/Melb and Adelaide. Armidale'ish might do for a North Coast/Brisbane.

 

Any other non-thoughts about an absolutely co-incidental meeting?

Great idea, just do not invite the general public or advertise the event to the general population!

 

Have a read of the new CASA handbook on air displays, in particular the definition / examples of what CASA define as an airshow. Your local Aero Club BBQ with a general "come and say hello" in the local paper, radio station or open social media site is now considered to be an Air Display and requires approval, read the definitions in this:

Hey guys, the Wagga Wagga Boy Scouts are having a fund raising sausage sizzle at the Wagga airport this weekend, drop in and buy a sausage for a good cause.

I too have worked well with the Authority, but having recently spent 6 hours compiling an application for 1 aircraft to do 2 wings level passes over a public gathering at 1000' AGL, I'm starting to rethink our relationship.

 

Maybe I'm taking the directions in the handbook too literally, but I find it difficult to read between the lines if that's the author's intention.

Great idea Bex!!! Some thoughts....

 

  1. Don't try to compete with the existing Ozkosh/Airventure event in spirit or in timing. There is enough space for both events to coexist. Have your one as a more relaxed get together of pilots and for pilots and let the other event be different.
     
     
  2. Keep the infrastructure requirements simple. Perhaps say to people who want to exhibit that they are just getting a bare space and they need to provide whatever power/shade displays that they want. Also consider not having things like seminars and workshops. People enjoy them but they do take a lot of effort to organise.
     
     
     
  3. Allow camping on site.
     
     
  4. Consider having the event over Easter. That does allow some of us that work to make the trip without using too much leave. I understand that some people want to spend easter so this one may be contentious.
     
     
  5. Dont give it a stupid name. It should have its own identity and not be a play on words or a copy of another event. It sets the event up to be compared to the other event. Ozkosh was a disappointment to me because Oskosh was so good....
     
     

 

 

The type of event you describe could be held at a different location each year, a traveling annual get together, especially if it was kept simple.

I did mention a 6 month spacing away from OzKosh. Easter is a good idea.

 

Not trying to compete, there is always room for a major social event. A casual non-pressure and no expectations other than what you make of it, was the approach I used to make my previous club successful.

Without knocking the idea at all, the location is a difficult one. Many people like camping whilst others prefer accommodation options.

 

Example 1

 

The Monto RAA event. Nothing wrong with the event as such but next to no accomodation. I like many camped in a tent but sub zero temp. which ment it was a once only trip for me.

 

Ex 2

 

Watts Bridge fly in. The weather was also cold but I stayed in a motel at Kingaroy 30minute flight away and considered it great. A comfortable bed and hot shower made a big difference.

 

But you can never satisfy everyone.

Another couple of location suggestions:

 

Moruya and Cootamundra.

 

  • Both of these are part way between Melbourne and Sydney, attempting to be reasonable for many people.
     
     
  • Have 2 runways so that there are no issues with crosswinds
     
     
  • For Moruya there is camping just across the fence and access to the beach for the non-flyers. Cootamundra could have camping in the grassed area at the south east corner as you enter the airport by road.
     
     
  • Morouya town is a little distance away but Cootamundra is a 15 minute walk.
     
     
  • Neither require an ASIC (I think but need to check to be sure)

Tocumwal, Deniliquin or similar in the region might not be a bad option - almost equidistant between Melb and Syd, and not much further for Adelaide, too.. These towns usually have good accommodation options (if camping isn't allowed on the airfield, there is usually something suitable close by). Although I haven't been to Deniliquin for decades, it seems to have a welcoming aeroclub as well.. And I would doubt either would require an ASIC.

REX flys into Moruya so that will be a 'secure' airport!

Better still, get the council to provide escorts for all visitors for the event. Maybe that's a way to sort out ASICs, descend en-mass at security controlled airports without ASICs.

Hey what about you all flying up here to Qld and getting a tan,,maybe Bowen airstrip with two runways and showers and toilets and camping maybe ,,,and only 20 minutes flying time from the Whitsunday islands and Airlie beach with the challenging airport of shute harbour for the adventurus ones,,or Townsville just a hr north or Collinsville to the west ,,heaps of things to see and do, and also great people up here with a great attitude and veriety of flying adventures to do , as in BBQ beach,a hidden private beach or camping beach another hidden treasure, etc etc would give all you southerners a good chance to top up on your navigation skills and long flight training etc Or Lakeside airstrip at Midge point.

Sounds good!.. I'll have a petite asian 18 to 22 and ....errr.... oh.....wait....

Incorporate something like Home for some real fun aviation.

 

Losers get early beer and a good show, winners get bragging rights.

 

Any parallel runways or dry lakes out there?

Come to Thangool in May. It should not be too cold, plus usually good weather.

 

The one thing I really like about Thangool and Callide Dawson club is that there will probably be good musical entertainment, rather than the noise at Old Station.

Sounds good, Yenn. I just checked that out. I could make it if I refuel at Warwick and Murgon or nearby.

What's noise? To me it's rap crap, mournful cowboy music and warbling sopranos. Pretty much everything else is great.

As JG3 points out (Narromine debarkle,,,,6ft fence !!!!!!!) who needs an Airshow? Seems that's what adds complexity and cost to any Fly-In.

 

The air display might bring in a few members of the general public; at venues closer to big population centres (like Rutherford near Maitland and Newcastle) you might get a large enough crowd to offset the extra cost of keeping the public safe. I'd be interested in a cost/benefit analysis of adding aerobatics, warbirds and the Roulettes. Seems like there's a demand for a few simple get-togethers.
