pmccarthy
Exceptional flying and luck brought these home. First is fighter damage, next two were bombs from friendly at higher level, last was an AA shell.

cooperplace
my father was in Darwin in WW2 and he saw a man's remains being hosed out of the rear turret of a Liberator: result of a cannon shell hit. He said that the poor tail gunner often copped it. Aircrew were brave men.
cscotthendry
In the European theater, aircrew had a higher mortality rate than infantry. Their war was cushy and clean (compared to the ground pounders) ... until it wasn't.
ClintonB
We worry about little things like a splutter or miss in an engine, iPad failure etc , these aircrew not only had chunks of the plane missing to contend with, but being shot at as well. Makes one appreciate their bravery and will to get the job done and get home.
