I'm a PhD student in the city and would love to learn to fly. Any suggestions for places in the area accessible by public transport?

As there are only 2 places in Sydney - Bankstown and Camden (Wgong is too far away) - you have no choice. Bankstown is accessible by bus from railway station, but it is extremely unreliable and slow, you have to plan 45 mins to get to airport from station, and may be not in time because the bus did not appear at all. But I do know one bloke who does ride there by train from city.

Buy a cheap motorbike and be happy. You definitely do not need to go there if there is rain, hurricane etc, and in good whether the cheapest scooter will do the job. Anyway learning to fly will cost you much more.
