  1. So we are planning a trip to NZ over Easter. Planned itinerary is hopefully YBSK - YSCB (clear customs) - YMCO (technical refuelling stop) - NZNV (enter NZ customs) - NZGM - NZNS - NZHS - NZRO - NZCX - NZKK (exit NZ customs) - YLHI (re-enter AUS) - YPMQ - YBSK.

Alternate is fly YBSK to YMHB then NZNV.

I'm managing to figure out much of the logistics of flying in NZ, but the big question is clearing customs outbound. There is just no info available about required paperwork etc, and we keep on getting pointed to FBO which we fear are going to be costly.

Does anyone have any advice about how to DIY customs/immigration by yourself?

    Thanks all.

  2. Oh, so many to add! My Faves

Gulgong (Near Mudgee NSW) - We flew into Gulgong Aero club last year and not only found out they had two beautiful self-contained huts, but the guy who ran the place was super lovely and helpful. Even lent us his ute for us to head into town.  http://gulgongaeropark.com.au/about-us/background/

Milawa - the airstrip is right next to the Brown Brothers vinyard. Excellent day trip for some wine tasting and unbelievable restraunt. There is a fancy place to stay just across the road.

Mudgee - we went a fee weekends ago, write up here - https://flyaboutaustralia.wordpress.com/2019/02/23/mudgee-weekender/

The rest - There were plenty during our flyabout in 2016, but a stand out fave was Dunk Island. https://flyaboutaustralia.wordpress.com/2016/08/28/island-hopping-part-1/

  3. Would also like to ask a few questions about this one! We are planning a trip this Easter and going to NZ anti-clockwise - out of hobart, into Invercargill, up NZ and, out via KerriKeri, then home via Lord howe and Port Macquarie.

Has anyone flown out of Hobart before? Do we need a ground handler or can we make arrangements directly with Customs?

Thanks to anyone who knows the answer. I'm going to pull together all the logistics and share as a resource once done.

    Cheers.

    Sophie

  4. Don't forget Dubbo for an overnight and visit to Western Plains Zoo. Or you could fly into Narromine for a look around, then see if you can hire a car to go to the Zoo at Dubbo.

Any flight down the coast to Moruya on a nice day is great. See if Jaspers Brush has the strip length for your plane.

A visit to Temora is also on the Must Do list.

OLd man - Yes, someone actually gave us a Dubbo visit as a wedding gift - must lock that in! We'll also look into Jaspers Brush. Has anyone flown in there before or know where the most up to date info is?

  5. What you got Sophie?? Unfortunately you didn't purchase an ATEC aircraft from me but I wont hold that against you.

    Back to your Q;

All depends on how long you want to fly for - I can recommend day trips down the south coast Mermimbula - Moruya both have great little airfield, very welcoming and terrific surrounding areas to explore. The NSW & Vic High Country has a host of beut airfields that you will be welcomed at. Then there is Scone , Cessnock, etc in the Hunter Valley. Rylstone to the NW  is a lovely private/open to fly in, airfield. I also like Mudgee & Cowra. Bit further west Parkes is very well apointed for GA visits. The list is endless. Have fun stay safe.

We fly a cirrus SR22 and have IFR so we have a lot of flexibility. Merimbula is certainly on the list - i think may be our first trip next weekend (either that or Mudgee). We LOVED flying into Milawa and visiting the brown brother vin-yard - any other highland destinations you would recommend.

Thanks also for the Rylstone recomendation - its added to the hit list and their fly-in in May has been added to our "Ultimate Flying Calendar',
