The tacho on a 582 works from a single independent coil on the stator. Two wires from that coil go to the tach, no 12 volts involved.
That type supplied with the 582 requires a minimum load of 1 amp to regulate correctly. The voltage will go high with no load.
That’s why I’m suspicious of the regulator because the current was 7 amps to the battery so in essence more than 1 amp and I think the tacho has just had its day maybe and thanks to Brendan for his advice and offering of a spare one I do appreciate it a whole lot .

I only have a PC. If I'm away I'm essentially out of contact on line. Sometimes Microsoft mucks things up for a while also. For ME life used to be a BEACH. Nev

Thought it had a clear plastic casing. Sulphated is when a lead acid Battery sits discharged for too long. White stuff builds up on the Plates. Nev
Oh ok not he battery is fine nev no build up it’s just as the increased rpm the voltage to the battery and then in turn to the instruments also increases to a point where it’s sometimes around 18 volts now in my limited understanding I’d believe that the voltage regulator should limit to about 14.5 v max and increase the current for an increase in rpm while holding a steady voltage to a point where the battery is charged and then floats the current?

Could be sulphated up and have a high resistance. When charged the Plate colour should be dark brown and grey. Nev
Sorry, I’m not understanding what your saying nev

Damien - There is a huge range of voltage regulator and opinions on what is best/most cost effective. Do a google search - Everything from ride on mower & motorcycle units, to Rotax OM (the most costly by far).
Everyone swears by their particular choice, so very hard to get an unbiased recommendation. Much will depend on your budget and willingness to try something other than OM.
The following, non Rotax, alternatives have some enthusiastic users and detractors:
- Silent Hektik
- Ducati
- John Deere
- AVC1
- Carr 5115
- Advanced Power
Whatever you get, make sure it is mounted in a well vented area - VR's have cooling fins to dissipate heat, so need some airflow for long service life.
RFGuy or one of the other electronics experts, on this Forum, are possibly your best bet for advice.
Thankyou for you advice I’ll have a look at a few listed and see if they will suit

That's going to wreck any kind of battery. WHAT type is in there at the moment? Nev
It’s the original I think nev square type with an epoxy cover

Having worked with Ducati.....
this is the last regulator I would recommend.
they are notorious for overcharging and overheating.
we would often replace with aftermarket alternatives and relocation kits to put them in the airflow
Thankyou for the advice

I hadn’t thought of that thanks

First thing I'd do is replace it I think, but you'll have to check the voltages and charge rate straight away. Nev
Thanks the current was about 7 amps but voltage was high 14-17 volts

i wouldn't bother helping this bloke. something dodgy here. i gave him a replacement tacho and mailed it at my own cost and he has given me the cold shoulder since.

I just checked my voltage 14 volts at 3000 at around 5000 RPM getting 17 Volts at my battery up to around 21 Volts at around 6000 I believe I need to replace it. Any ideas?

I check the bore of this engine it still has cross hatched in the cylinders and looks like new piston rings as the previous owners son who advised that the engine was rebuilt but only ran up for testing purposes
one step closer any other information that you guys with experience think I need to check or advise to work on ??

Alan of Wingtech retired October last year and sold off all his factory machinery and managed to use up the last of his sail materials inventory. I was fortunate to get the last full set he made, cost me $3970 delivered to Rockhampton. He also included repair swatches of material for me. I have heard nothing since of anyone advertising Thruster skins since.
Bugger that’s not what I wanted to hear glad you got some though.. and that price is good for piece of mind .
oh well I’ll keep looking cheers guys
