- Mike Arnold was instrumental in NASA's 1996 Pegasus Hypersonic Experiment (PHYSX) which at that time was estimated to fly up to Mach 12. The purpose was to explore the boundary between laminar flow and turbulent flow at higher Mach numbers. I got to go with him for a couple of days. I'm a 70 year old guitarist and interested in aircraft my whole life. My best friend was Mike Arnold (who died in 2015) who set a world speed record in an airplane he designed and built (the AR-5). It has the lowest measured drag of any man carrying airplane and currently resides at the Hiller Air Museum in Redwood City, California. He also designed and made the forms for a champion Formula1 air racer (the AR-6) and we posted videos about them on Youtube. Hope you enjoy my videos!
