  1. This is my best app on my iPad and also have a backup on the phone.

Before I used it in the plane I experimented with it in the car and on the bus on the way to work. Works a treat!!!!

The developers for this App have done a great job... I quite often sit and go through some of the many different tools to get the best suit for me. Better to do it in the lounge chair than when flying and there is a lot happening.

Now can submit flight plan direct from the application..so easy.

  2. Good decision

    Tigerfish,

Good decision that you have heeded the advice of people on this site regarding Cyclones.

Cyclone season is just starting and as mentioned inland the temperatures are excessive creating thermals.

I flew locally last week, temp was 38 degrees and thermals were throwing me up 400 ft in a few moments, That was in a Piper warrior. Very hard to maintain altitude.

Dest Devills or Willy Willys a problem that day, not very pleasant to fly through one of them. Gave me quite a scare. :ah_oh:

Did not see it as it had not picked up any dust. i was performing climbing turn at 500ft in the circuit, so you can imagine how I felt.040_nerd.gif.a6a4f823734c8b20ed33654968aaa347.gif

Just returned from a vacation in Adelaide...very nice country to drive around, next time it will be in the air.

What ever you do, take care.

  3. Hope you guys may be able to help me.

I have a friend who is colour blind and is desperate to get up in the air. Medically he is fit and fine but has trouble discerning Green and Red. 040_nerd.gif.a6a4f823734c8b20ed33654968aaa347.gif 031_loopy.gif.e6c12871a67563904dadc7a0d20945bf.gif

Is he able to obtain a recreational licence. What are the medical requirements.

I understood that if you were able to hold a driving licence then medically you were fine for recreational flying... I do know that PPL and CPL are out of the question for him.

He is based in Canberra and so what would be the best option for him???

  4. Congrats

    Horsefeathers

Well done on your first SOLO it is quite an experience. Something you will not forget for a very long time, may be never forget it....

    Enjoy the feeling.

It is a funny feeling when you realise you are alone and it is all up to you.

Your Instructer know you competencies and skill or she would never have let you attempt it.

It is also a good feeling for the Instructer to see one of their students acheive this milestone..

    Well done...011_clap.gif.c796ec930025ef6b94efb6b089d30b16.gif011_clap.gif.8adfe837b4189ee6622bf4917d6a88c0.gif011_clap.gif.c796ec930025ef6b94efb6b089d30b16.gif

  5. Comms

    Great video..

Only comments are that I found the location in all the calls very muffled...listened many times. I know it is Bindoon but can not make out the rest...sounds like 'Bindoon abandoned'...May be that you are saying very fast, perhaps need to slow down a touch.

You also tend to favour the left corner of the runway rather than the centre, or is there a reason for that.

    Other wise a good job...well done..

PS.. These are not critisims but my observations..:black_eye:

  6. Could I get some clarity with regards to RA aircraft and their limitations with regards to airspace.

Are recreational aircraft allowed to fly in controlled airspace at all, or are they restricted to Class G airspace?

Are RA allowed to land at GAAP (Soon to change) airports.

What if the RA plane was being piloted by a PPL and had a transponder and all the legal equipment.

Where would they be able to fly then?

  7. Mio Navigation

    Ross,

have been running around with this in my car for some time.

Was on a (Solo) navigation yesterday and turned the unit on twice to see if it was working OK...It was great...just confirmed my calculations...awesome.

Many thanks for your help, it makes me feel a little bit safer...for the confirmation aspect.

Also used it on the ground for distance and heading information...of the route I flew yesterday.

    Keith..

  8. Ready to go.

I have got the Vio 300 (very good for $99) and it works well in the car for normal driving better than the old original Tom Tom..

What I have done so far is to load the files to unlock onto the SD card. But I do not think I have unlocked it yet.

Can you guys shed some light onto this for me. How do I know it is unlocked now?i_dunno

Have ordered OziExplorer and maps from Maptrax - ready for the next stage.

    Regards

    Keith

  9. Taking the plunge

I have been watching this thread for a while now...Slarti you must be so busy helping all your fellow aviators out. I can tell they all appreciate it.. 011_clap.gif.c796ec930025ef6b94efb6b089d30b16.gif018_hug.gif.8f44196246785568c4ba31412287795a.gif

Today I have taken the plunge and ordered a Mio Moov 300 and will see if I can get this all configured..

Will keep you posted of my progress.

Have a good easter guys..safe flying...too many mistakes being made recently.

    Regards

    Keith

  10. Actual exchanges between pilots and control towers

Tower: "Delta 351, you have traffic at 10 o'clock, 6 miles!"

Delta 351: "Give us another hint! We have digital watches!"

Tower: "TWA 2341, for noise abatement turn right 45 Degrees."

TWA 2341: "Center, we are at 35,000 feet. How much noise can we make up here?"

Tower: "Sir, have you ever heard the noise a 747 makes when it hits a 727?"

From an unknown aircraft waiting in a very long takeoff queue: "I'm f....ing bored!"

Ground Traffic Control: "Last aircraft transmitting, identify yourself immediately!"

Unknown aircraft: "I said I was f...ing bored, not f....ing stupid!"

O'Hare Approach Control to a 747: "United 329 heavy, your traffic is a Fokker, one o'clock, three miles, Eastbound."

United 329: "Approach, I've always wanted to say this...I've got the little Fokker in sight."

A student became lost during a solo cross-country flight. While attempting to locate the aircraft on radar, ATC asked, "What was your last known position?"

Student: "When I was number one for takeoff."

A DC-10 had come in a little hot and thus had an exceedingly long roll out after touching down.San Jose TowerNoted:

"American 751, make a hard right turn at the end of the runway, if you are able. If you are not able, take the Guadeloupe exit off Highway 101, make a right at the lights and return to the airport."

    My favorite.

A Pan Am 727 flight, waiting for start clearance in Munich, overheard the following:

Lufthansa (in German): "Ground, what is our start clearance time?"

Ground (in English): "If you want an answer you must speak in English."

Lufthansa (in English): "I am a German, flying a German airplane, in Germany . Why must I speak English?"

Unknown voice from another plane (in a beautiful British accent): "Because you lost the bloody war!"

Tower: "Eastern 702, cleared for takeoff, contact Departure on frequency 124.7"

Eastern 702: "Tower, Eastern 702 switching to Departure. By the way, after we lifted off we saw some kind of dead animal on the far end of the runway."

Tower: "Continental 635, cleared for takeoff behind Eastern 702, contact Departure on frequency 124.7. Did you copy that report from Eastern 702?"

Continental 635: "Continental 635, cleared for takeoff, roger; and yes, we copied Eastern... we've already notified our caterers."

One day the pilot of a Cherokee 180 was told by the tower to hold short of the active runway while a DC-8 landed. The DC-8 landed, rolled out, turned around, and taxied back past the Cherokee. Some quick-witted comedian in the DC-8 crew got on the radio and said,"What a cute little plane. Did you make it all by yourself?"

The Cherokee pilot, not about to let the insult go by, came back with a real zinger: "I made it out of DC-8 parts. Another landing like yours and I'll have enough parts for another one."

The German air controllers at Frankfurt Airport are renowned as a short-tempered lot. They not only expect one to know one's gate parking location, but how to get there without any assistance from them. So it was with some amusement that we (a Pan Am 747) listened to the following exchange between Frankfurtground control and a British Airways 747, call sign Speedbird 206.

Speedbird 206: " Frankfurt , Speedbird 206! clear of active runway."

Ground: "Speedbird 206. Taxi to gate Alpha One-Seven."

The BA 747 pulled onto the main taxiway and slowed to a stop.

Ground: "Speedbird, do you not know where you are going?"

Speedbird 206: "Stand by, Ground, I'm looking up our gate location now."

Ground (with quite arrogant impatience): "Speedbird 206, have you not been to Frankfurt before?"

Speedbird 206 (coolly): "Yes, twice in 1944, but it was dark, -- And I didn't land."

While taxiing at London's Airport, the crew of a USAir flight departing for Ft. Lauderdalemade a wrong turn and came nose to nose with a United 727..

An irate female ground controller lashed out at the USAir crew, screaming: "US Air 2771, where the hell are you going? I told you to turn right onto Charlie taxiway! You turned right on Delta! Stop right there. I know it's difficult for you to tell the difference between C and D, but get it right!"

Continuing her rage to the embarrassed crew, she was now shouting hysterically: "God! Now you've screwed everything up! It'll take forever to sort this out! You stay right there and don't move till I tell you to! You can expect progressive taxi instructions in about half an hour, and I want you to go exactly where I tell you, when I tell you, and how I tell you! You got that, US Air 2771?"

    "Yes, ma'am,"the humbled crew responded.

Naturally, the ground control communications frequency fell terribly silent after the verbal bashing of US Air 2771. Nobody wanted to chance engaging the irate ground controller in her current state of mind.. Tension in every cockpit out around Gatwick was definitely running high. Just then an unknown pilot broke the silence and keyed his microphone, asking: "Wasn't I married to you once?"

  11. May help...

SARWATCH is a generic term covering SAR alerting based on either full-position procedures, scheduled reporting times, or SARTIME. Full-position procedures and scheduled reporting times are only applicable to IFR flights in all airspace classes and most monitored VFR flights operating in controlled airspace. SARTIME is a time nominated by a pilot for the initiation of a SAR action if a report has not been received from the pilot by the nominated Airservices Australia unit.

A VFR pilot operating in Class G airspace may nominate a SARTIME to ATS but the progress of the flight is not monitored, though SAR action will be initiated if there is no communication from the pilot cancelling the SARTIME. Rather than nominating a SARTIME with ATS a flight note lodged with a responsible person, who will raise the alarm should the pilot not report in as scheduled, is preferred for VFR Class G operations.
