  1. (now, all I need is the OziexplorerCE build for android to be released, and I will be one happy novice pilot

Grab OruxMaps from the market, it does EVERYTHING OziCE did/does (and is free).

I have used Ozi for years and I really missed it when my PDA died. This app certainly fills that void!!

I've converted all my ozfx3 files across just fine (instructions are on their website)

Des is apparently writing Ozi for Android but no release date is even hinted at, and given how much OziCE cost (as well as ozi for the Desktop) I'd have to imagine it's going to be more than a few dollars!!

Oruxmaps also is supported by some of the flying apps on thew android market too!

I discovered it the other day and I'm writing some tutorials that will be published here on how to convert files etc over the next few weeks.

  2. There one owned by a guy I know down her in Tassie at Georgetown.

He's had some mods done to the tail and apparently it handles a lot better than it did before.

He's also got a partially completed kit, might be worth contacting him if you are looking for one, message me and I'll pass on his details.

It's a tidy looking plane without a lot of vices when in the air!

EDIT: just realised the post above was replying to a 2006 post 025_blush.gif.9304aaf8465a2b6ab5171f41c5565775.gif025_blush.gif.8e2ecc192cc98853ac4370dddcd7cf74.gif025_blush.gif.9304aaf8465a2b6ab5171f41c5565775.gif025_blush.gif.8e2ecc192cc98853ac4370dddcd7cf74.gif025_blush.gif.9304aaf8465a2b6ab5171f41c5565775.gif025_blush.gif.8e2ecc192cc98853ac4370dddcd7cf74.gif

Still, what I said holds true 025_blush.gif.9304aaf8465a2b6ab5171f41c5565775.gif

  3. There's reportedly a lot of people have been caught with downloading and installing an app that purported to be a media player, but requested permission to make phone calls! It did... hundreds of them to premium pay phone numbers. Now you can't say that wasn't obviously fishy. Why would a media player need to make phone calls?

FYI: An audio based app requesting access to the phone state is perfectly normal in Android, as you need to grab the incoming/outgoing call events etc to mute the sound of your app when a call is being sent or recieved, nothing fishy at all about that in most instances. (A wallpaper app requiring it though should probably raise a few alarms!)

Something else to keep in mind is that every time someone tells me something "absolutely can't happen", I know they have insufficient understanding of the matter. I've been around ICT for too long to say that.

I've been working with the SDK's since the 1.1 APIs were released way back when... Got a bit of an idea about how it all works 040_nerd.gif.a6a4f823734c8b20ed33654968aaa347.gifSeriously though, the security model is probably one of the better I've seen in any OS. Nothing is 100% secure of course.

Having said that, even a good antivirus package cannot always save the person who does not practice safe computing.

Yep, agree 100%, Nothing will save some people!

Hmmm, this is veering O.T........sorry F.D!

  4. You don't need to bog your Desire (or any Android phone) down with anti-virus snakeoil.

You cannot run an application or service on the handset without you specifically granting the app permission, this is a built in security feature of the android OS.

AV programs they are selling do not do anything other than take money from your pocket.

As always, use common sense, keep away from the dodgy corners of the internet and you'll be sweet.

  5. Well, the other Galaxy products show that they have GPS AND A-GPS facilities, yet the tablet only shows A-GPS on the spec sheets I've seen.

I've made the (possibly incorrect) assumption that that is all they are using for geolocation features, there are a lot of mobile devices out there that do that (use the phone towers only for positioning)

If it does have a proper GPS in it I'll be certainly considering it myself!

  6. If you read and can believe the many reviews that are around Nokia seem to be dragging their heels badly. ????

Nokia's N8 comes out shortly, has more features than most phones (HDMI out, USB support, awesome camera) but now everyone wants apps and Symbian isn't that popular a platform for mobile devs to work on. MeeGo/Moblin/Whateveritscalledthisweek that runs on their N900 isn't getting the support it needs from within Nokia itself to become a serious player, which is a shame coz it's pretty good, and as a sort of developer I wouldn't mind writing stuff for it, but I don't see there is a strong enough userbase to bother right now.

Nokia will be stuck in the phone-phone category for a bit longer methinks, and that's a but of a pity as their stuff is so damn good and can survive a drop or two unlike most phones in the top end of town.

    (I'm such a nerd....)

  7. One last question, how difficult is it to remove the wings etc for trailering?

I'm not too sure I can afford hangar space, and need to suss out the alternatives.

Great feedback so far, looks like I'm going down the right track!

  8. As my instructor told me, the hardest part is the drive to your first lesson.

    EVERYONE starts out the same!

It took my wife to get me a voucher for my TIF to get me in the air, and my only regret is not doing it 10 years earlier!

Good luck with whatever path you choose.

  9. Goto find me an app for windows mobile/i900 now..

    EveryTrail - Windows Mobile Application

These doovers are great to keep an eye on consistency. I have noticed that my circuits this weekend were a lot more uniform that the last lot.

(Mind you, conditions were totally different...smooth as silk on Saturday for the most part)

It's also interesting to dump this stuff in to Google Earth and look at the altitude and all that on the track log.

What can I say, I loves me some gadgetry..... and this phone has taken my usual array of gadgets that I have on me (GPSr, Phone, MP3 player , Compass) and distilled it in to one chunk of awesome :-) ... It even makes phone calls!

I should point out that the GPS recivers in all these phones are NOT on par with a dedicated device... I've been testing against my Garmin GPSrs I have. (yes, multiple) and the quality is not in the same ballpark..... Good but not great...so my Oregon is still my primary GPSr for now when in the bush or whatnot.

  10. I'm still training, and due to current financial circumstances (back on one income because wife isn't working since the arrival of kid #3) i t means I can only afford to train once a fortnight, something I'm not too happy with, but I am keeping on top of things ok so far (apparently).

No point causing too much financial stress to the family! When the wife goers back to work next year I'll increase the frequency.

After I get my ticket I'm looking at buying an Xair or similar to keep myself up in the air that way without spending hideous amounts of cash.

  11. don't/can't expect anyone to do it all for me, but here is a somewhat larger sample.

I manipulate huge geodata sets all the time with the website I run, I can knock up something and spit it out in whatever format you want (wpt/gpx/kml)... wouldn't take long.

  12. You should not be adding a leading 0 to anything as it SHOULD be in decimal Degree format (ddd.dddddd) You need to set your map program up to use it (from that screenshot I can see Mapsource is using ddd mm.mmmm format)

Using this I have ASHF out in the Tasman Sea not sure if this is correct as google is returning nothing of substance for 'ASHF'

The 5434.500 on the end of the Longitude looks like it's a separate data value and there's a comma missing.

Is it possible for you to send me the file so I can have a better look?

If you can send it to [email protected] I can pull it apart better and get an understanding of what all thwe data SHOULD be doing and correct any obvious error

  13. Every Android user needs Android Travel App, Android GPS Tracking by EveryTrail This not only records your track and distance information it includes height (altitude) information as well. There is also an iPhone version if you are infected with that particular disease

Grabbed that App today, and took it up while doing circuits.

The result: Flying lesson 12 - Flying - Everytrail. Awesome.

(Did my first unassisted landing today too on the final one... a little bit on the hard side, but a good feeling none the less!!)
