  1. I was somewhat surprised as I reread the PA28 report that they said the wires were only 133' AWL. I guess that is measured when the lake is full

    Nope. They're much closer when the lake is full, you ought to see them from boat level (esp. from the top deck of a houseboat!). I read the report as saying as much, 133 ft above water on that day, and the lake was 72.5 feet below full (288.9m-266.5m), which leaves around 60ft of clearance when the lake is full - which looks about right (I'm not game enough to try and measure it with a stick or anything). The wires were resagged (tightened) over 15 years ago (ie before the PA28 crash - I won't call it an accident) to get that sort of clearance as houseboats had been permitted to increase in height.

    Hmmm. "Altimeter ...reading...500 ft" The lake when full is 192.0 mAHD, and is currently reading 189.19 metresAHD (which is a tad over 610 ft above AHD, which approximates the old 'sea level')

  3. Just saw on the WIN TV news that the incident was witnessed by two off-duty police and one on-duty water policeman and they are providing witness statements. The pilot has two days to provide a written report to RAAus who will then advise CASA.

     

    Pilot was breath tested at the scene, but police aren't saying anything (as usual). Pilot had blood samples taken at hospital for alcohol and drug testing. The delay on those is running at abt 1 month.

     

     

  4. Nunans, In answer to your prev question. I would guess slowed right down with full flap you'd probabily get the bantam pulled up with brakes, in around 100-125 mts (solo). Possibly shorter if your really on the numbers. I've only done the one landing and I didn't pace out the distance of course, but the aircraft felt real good on short final and I'm sure with a few landings it would be landed real short..................................................Maj...024_cool.gif.7a88a3168ebd868f5549631161e2b369.gif

    I'm assuming that the quoted fuel capacity is in US gallons, hence 43g = 163 litres, or approx. 120kg ?

     

    The quoted max useful of 974lbs = 442 kg

     

    Less 120 for fuel, leaves 322kg. The example posted above says "100kg baggage", ie leaving 222 kg for POB.

    PS. As a non-flyer, I quite enjoy Tony's posts. I actually consider them fairly well written, always topical and thought provoking. But then I suppose, to you aviators it might seem like teaching grannie to suck eggs.

     

    PPS I was actually thinking of seeking permission from Tony to use his guidelines in another forum I frequent which gets absolutely feral at times (I hasten to add, it's nothing to do with aviation).

     

     

  8. To avoid another snafu like the saleyard fiasco, is it possible to have Council place a caveat on the title ensuring it's future as an airport?

     

    Later removal of the caveat (to allow some use of the land) would then presumably necessitate a hearing in which the original owners/ lodger of the caveat (and that being a Council, it should also then include interested parties) would have to give a statement either supporting the removal of the caveat, or a rebuttal (which might or might not be accepted by the hearing)?

    Note at 100km/h (a bit below 50 knots) it's burning only 3.5 litres/hr! (ie. 100km/h / 30km/l). Not bad for what is basically either an helo- or a gyro-copter at 550kgs! But also note it's just an "estimated fuel economy", but is that land cruising or flying?

     

    Believe it when I see it!

  11. A Jab 430 without the two rear seats is just a Jab 230!!!! That's the only difference that I can see from the Jab website. Specifically it states that they have the same fuse and wing, but the 230 has extra luggage space whereas the 430 has the extra seats.

     

    The 430 kit has a (GA) rating of 700kg, the 230 kit has the RAAus rating of 544kg, and the 230C (certified, factory built) apparently has the LSA rating of 600kg! (Well that's what the website seems to say.)

     

     

  12. Off thread I know, but I always thought that Cabramurra had the highest airstrip in Australia? Cabra was touted as being the highest town in Aust, and I seem to recollect that the airstrip was a bit higher again. I can remember being a passenger in the Snowy Mtns Authority's Pilatus Porter when we dropped in there (they used to do round trips Cooma, Khancoban, Cabra, Talbingo, Cooma once or twice every day, many years ago albeit). Not sure how it lines up against Mt Hotham/ Dinner Plain nowadays though!

    Somebody bust the APEC exclusion zone????

     

    Just witnessed two FA18's escort what looked to be a C337 to a position for final approach to Bankstown Runway 11. Anyone know what the story is? These two things had the noses high and very slowly on either side of the 337. They then buggered off to the west at high speed as soon as I noticed the 337 disappear behind the trees.
