  1. From the 'other halfs' point of view

Convincing your other half can't have been too hard Matt.

With the Sportstar it was the great paint scheme, the look of your aircraft can be a deciding factor in the 'other halfs' approval.

With the CT4 I stood my ground for 3 whole days Slarti! In the end it was the smell of an old aircraft that got me and I gave in. I'm still impressed I held out 3 days.

About the cost - figure out what it will cost for a year based on your estimated hours. I allow for 150 hrs a year so it includes 1 years insurance, 2 x 50 hrly and 1 x 100 hrly maitenance, 12 months hangerage, 150 hours worth of petrol at a worse case senario price ($1.90 for the 2009 year) and also include magazine subscriptions, registrations for RAA, Warbirds license fees, airways charges etc. Then you put aside X amount each week/month into a separate account and all the costs come out of that. This way your supportive 'other half' isn't always seeing cash going out of the account for aircraft realted items. It still costs the same but you don't notice it 006_laugh.gif.0f7b82c13a0ec29502c5fb56c616f069.gif

  2. Hey BigPete, how did LittlePete enjoy the weekend?? Had a chat to him on Saturday but didn't get a chance to talk to him again.

One thing the bad weather did achieve was to push us all into a warm cosy room full aviation atmosphere thumb_up.gif and good cheer big_grin.gif (and tall storys) - more like a 48 hour continous (nearly) party.

You're not wrong there Pete, what a great Aeroclub. We had an awesome time, even with the weather issues.

    Cheers,

    Kaz (the real one!)

  3. Hi everyone, we just got home from the weekend which started on Thursday for us - we knew the only way we'd make it was to leave on Thursday.

BigPete's post pretty much wrapped up the weekend - cold, wet and windy. A Couple of corrections to BigPete's post though...

Murray (didn't get a surname) (ex RAAF Instructor) did an magnificent job in his CT4 - you'd think it was a calm day, the way he flew that lil' ol' Victa.

Murray Wallace is his name and is a good friend of ours and mentor of Matt's....not an ex-RAAF instructor though, was an Army helicopter pilot then a long and distinguished airline career.

The spitfire came straight from Temora, - refuelled at Deniliquin (into wind runway) and did a bang up job in formation with Judy Pay's Trogen. (that gal can Fly!!!!)

Actually it was Alan Arthur's Kittyhawk which flew to Deni on Saturday for an ANZAC day flypast then stayed there overnight in a hangar there due to (as BigPete mentioned) having an in-to wind runway.

Beech 12 got into the air - beautiful sound and oh so shiny (I'm in love  (again)) did some very nice passes and departed for home. 002_wave.gif.62d5c7a07e46b2ae47f4cd2e61a0c301.gif

Actually a Lockeed 12...and yes she is a beautiful machine.

A big thanks to the Echuca Aero Club for helping us (the Antique Aeroplane Association) put on a fantastic weekend for our national fly-in.

Oh...it's actually Matt here, just figured out I'm logged in as Kaz....anyhow we'll get around to a full post of our own in the next couple of days.

    Cheers,

    Matt (masquerading as Kaz 006_laugh.gif.0f7b82c13a0ec29502c5fb56c616f069.gif)

  4. For info - Brisbane Centre run Pilots Nights, where GA (and RAA) pilots can come to the centre for a few hours and have Safety and ATC personnel give presentations on a range of topics. You also spend time in the Ops room and simulator to get an understanding of what the contollers do. If you live in the area talk to your flying club, get a group together and contact the Centre.

  5. This is more a “go see†than a “fly to†trip report… on Sunday we decided to go watch the A380 land at Melbourne Airport.

It was due about 12.40 so we got there a little early, checked ATIS, positioned ourselves nicely at the end of the RWY 16 and listed to the scanner waiting to hear it come in.

Change of runway, we’re now landing RWY 27. Damn. The A380 can land on 27 but it’s not preferred so while we’re waiting to see what it’ll do, the scanner battery dies. Maybe I should charge it more than once a year…

Big decision, wait at RWY 16, go to RWY 27 on the off chance or go around to RWY 34… a Virgin aircraft takes off over our heads and the decision is made. We get around to the end of RWY 34, there are plane spotting geeks armed with scanners and binoculars and we know we’re in the right place. At least someone came prepared.

A couple minutes later we see the beast on final!

    Bloody Huge!

The tail on this thing is enormous!

    Full Right Rudder

    About a 15 knot crosswind

    Full Left Rudder

    Nice one...

Note: Thanks Matt for pointing out my Left and Right rudder comments were back to front i_dunno

    • Queensland pilot, wife and child were fliers

AUTHORITIES have found wreckage that could be a light aircraft that went missing on a flight from New South Wales to Brisbane with three people on board.

A search helicopter sighted wreckage that could be a light plane around noon (AEST) today at Hanging Rock, about 85km southeast of Tamworth, in northern NSW.

"One of the search's helicopters has sighted wreckage that appears to be aircraft from the air and that helicopter is currently investigating whether this wreckage is an aircraft and whether or not it is the aircraft in question,'' Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) spokesman Michael Spinks said.

  7. Light plane carrying three missing

    Article from: AAP

CONCERNED family members have notified authorities after a Cessna aircraft carrying three people failed to arrive in Brisbane on a flight from Sydney.

The plane took off from Bankstown in Sydney yesterday morning and landed at Scone, north-west of Newcastle, to refuel before departing for Archerfield Airport in Brisbane.

    The plane never arrived.

There has since been no contact with the aircraft or people onboard.

The travellers did not lodge a flight plan with authorities, who were unaware of the missing plane until notified by worried family members.

Australian Search and Rescue (AusSAR) is calling for any members of the public who may have seen or heard the light aircraft in the Scone to Quirindi area yesterday to contact them on 1800 815 257.

AusSAR has also asked pilots of other planes who were flying through the area yesterday to make contact.

AusSAR started a search for the plane at about 5.30 (AEST) this morning in the area between Scone and Archerfield.

  8. Pilots wishing to fly to the show can do so on both Saturday and Sunday and are most welcome.

An AIP Supp will be issued in due course but pilots should note that you will be allocated "slot times" for arrivals and that the departure sequence will be based upon ready to taxi calls.

There will be about 30-40 arrival slot times each day.

Details will be in the AIP Supp, which will be issued in due course. Slot times will not be available until after issue of the AIP Supp.

Aircraft are likely be parked on a concrete hardstand and will not be able to be tied down.

Accordingly, all aircraft must bring secure chocking.

Matt and I flew into the RAAF Edinburgh Airshow in 2007. The notes (above) look the same as when we flew in. We got a time slot to fly in on the Saturday morning and got permission to leave the aircraft there overnight Saturday, then after the airshow finished on the Sunday we departed with everyone else. There was definately no camping but we were able to access the plane during the day. We found the RAAF to be extremely helpful and the whole process was easy and great fun. I think the arrival slots are due to parking restrictions, they don't have a lot of space left after all the RAAF planes!

The AIP will give you all the info you need to know.

Matt and I hoping to get there but it will be via the domestic airlines 049_sad.gif.af5e5c0993af131d9c5bfe880fbbc2a0.gif

  9. Congratulations Ben 011_clap.gif.c796ec930025ef6b94efb6b089d30b16.gif Looks like it was a great day!

We were very dissapointed we couldn't make it, the weather played up all weekend and although we prepared the plane on 3 different occasions we didn't get to fly once 049_sad.gif.af5e5c0993af131d9c5bfe880fbbc2a0.gif

Glad so many others could make it there and we hope we'll catch you all at the next event!

  10. You did an excellent job of landing it safely Ross! As much as the bent bits hurt you and your dad are far more important.

I looked at your pics and thought "It's no so bad, throw a new undercarriage and prop on"... then I got a lesson from Matt on the finer details of what happens when the undercarriage is ripped off and the prop hit the ground and now I feel... 051_crying.gif.fe5d15edcc60afab3cc76b2638e7acf3.gif

Knowing how much time and effort you spent building the Cheetah, it must make the feelings that bit worse. On an up side - now you know you built a damn tough little plane!

Good luck with the repairs, keep us all updated.
