  1. Just my advice mate. You will also be more inclined to finish said aircraft if you can fly it as soon as you finish it.

Other thing is, where are you going to hanger this plane?? Coz will be hard getting guys to come out your way to help. Best keeping it at Bindoon or similar strip close to help and other aircraft owners.

Had Skydart for a while. Havent finished it yet :( Need to get it flying.

  2. Dave,

Theres a few drifters around mate. Theres two at bindoon (my Austflight WB503 and another blokes Maxair WB582) and another Austflight (I think) WB503 at Calingiri. Both owned by good mates and fellow drifter nuts. I dont fly mine as much as I used to. Try juggling work away, shooting anf flying :( Not easy.

Personally mate, I'd look at buying one that needs a lil work but is airworthy so you can start flying. The cost involved with rebuilding aircraft can be costly and if you do buy a drifter for around 5k, you will probs spend 10k at least rebuilding, engine cost, skins, airframe, etc. That and it will take you along time too mate. My Skydart III has been in my shed for around 7 years and havent done much too it due to having other stuff to fly and alike. Come to bindoon and have a look around as theres a bunch of knowledge and help and I'll take you to calingiri for a look see as those guys have a bunch of really interesting aircraft and I love just going over there and having a catch up with those guys. Also, Id get your licence first too. So that you can keep current and flying too.

Also, an advantage of buying in flying condition is that you could get a certified 25 series like my one as it will hold its value better if you ever do sell it. I was told by the previous owner that mine was Wayne Fishers training machine and the other drifter guys at my club did his initial flying training in my plane many moons ago.

Btw, I never commendeered the plane, I am paying it off same with my hanger :)

  3. I find that as I fly a WB503 Drifter, my circut size is very small, as there is no point in doing larger ones. So in that case, I find my self doing tight circuts and often 'undertaking' as my circut is within the larger A/C's one. Before I do 'undertake' I will get on the radio and see if thats fine with the other A/C. Usually it is.

  4. Once you fly a taildragger, you wont want a nose wheel again. Thats for certain. And flying tail draggers makes you a better nose wheel pilot. Of course, some will disagree with me. Both have merits, but I'm biased, Ive been flying taildraggers for the last 4 years since I got my licence and kinda since I was 12 when I first learnt in our old Skyfox.

  5. HH,

Ive flown in ELA's, RAF 2000's and watched some nice lil homebuilts fly around and if you want a nice basic single seater tahts a proven machine, go and have a look at a Ross Symes Machine. Very nice and basic. And they are the mainstay of the mustering communitee.

  6. Ohhh So thats sseeker, I started andrew on his flying up at bindoon. I still have yet to take him up in a REAL plane and teach him the finer things in life. Open cockpit, taildragging fun!!!!

  7. Hey Guys, I have a Certified WB503, where is all the extra weight, that seems to be a big increase. A mate has a WB582 but not certified and its flys much nicer but I think thats mainly the engine. He said the tubes and alike are all really beefed up but that increase of 70kg is a darn lot.

  8. Ive got a mount for a 532/582 which is right way up. I was concerned that the thrust line would be impacted severly but with the mount we have its only two inches higher. Im going to do it when I can.

  9. I havent got any tail shake that I can remember. I have a WB503. I'll have a closer feel when im next up flying her. I think mine is pretty much perfect. I love it.

  10. Im about 98 - 102 and my 503 Drifter flys darn well. But I am going to try and get a 582 or 532 w/ E Box and get a lil more power. Two up she doesnt like it much when you have someone that is over 80kgs in the back. I dont need much trim though, only about 1/3. It used to be Wayne Fishers so I wonder how he went training in it.
