  1. Correct mate. Soloman, did you not know this? I think it's time you start a complete rethink on your plane/plan. Read the following extract from RA.Aus.     I took another look it at the 95.10 regulations again, and I realised I missed something earlier, it says to include a 90kg pilot! Does this mean it must have a weight allowance for a 90 kg pilot? I got a set of the requirements for the 95.10 regulations printed out, and it did not have that on it.

     

     

  2. it's still funny to see how many noses get turned up when you mention RA. Even from guys with a 5th of the hours I've got.

    some people are just unbelievable, through all my years I’ve watched air crash investigation I’ve learnt that good pilots that save passenger are ones who go out flying in recreational aircraft during their weekends to brush up their skills, like the pilot who ditched the plane in the Hudson river, he would of not ditched the aircraft successfully if he hadn't been flying gliders. When they train commercial pilot for emergencies, they don’t usually include a training in ‘how to glide an A320 if all power is loss’, this is where experience in light aircraft comes in, we’ve all at least had training in how to handle a forced landings. Also another well-known pilot in America glided a B737 to safety using a well-known technique the side slip he had picked up during his experience with recreational flying. I say having done recreational hours should be a bonus to a pilots career, i really don’t understand why it gets frowned upon in the GA community.

     

     

  3. I don't know if many of you people have seen this, but this to me is one of the most unbelievable and completely avoidable plane crash I’ve ever seen. I am really disappointed in what the pilot did, just watching this video alone I knew there was something wrong with the take-off to begin with, it's quite obvious that it was over weight as it struggle to climb at take-off. What's worse is not the fact the pilot persisted on the taking off, but the fact he flew aircraft over a bunch of trees knowing how low the plane is flying and that it's struggling to climb. He had a clear grass field right in front of him! After he took off he had more than enough room to abort take off. It really makes me wonder what was going through his head when he was flying that plane, it's a shame when an experienced pilot makes such a big mistake that even I with little experience could of avoided. I feel sorry for the pilot though, and I’m glad they’re all alive!

This is a 1/10 scale drawing of my aircraft i haven't added much measurement in it because i didn't want to make it look too complicated, the other one with three different views in one page is just a rough sketch before i made my scaled drawing. It's not very clear on the photos but the small red dots you see are the CG symbols and the tubing thickness you see are exact scale. And thanks M61A1! that would be quite useful!

  5. As in when fuel burns off? In a short coupled design Like Solomon's I would be very concerned about the CofG indeed shifting with fuel burn aswel as the pilots weight shifting around. Simply leaning forward could change the cofg by a considerable amount when you consider that say 25% of MAC could well be 10% of the total moment of the aircraft.In a design such as this, the CofG does and will indeed shift.;)

    I haven't installed the fuel tank yet, but it's going to be very close to the CG, in fact it's probably just behind, so if fuel burns off it will be just a tad nose heavy.

     

     

  6. Here are some photos of the fuselage structure, it's made from galvanized steal and the skin I'm going to be using is fiberglass. The other picture of a silver plane is just a 1/10 scale of what the finished product would look like, note that I wasn't able to get the desired curves i wanted because of the material i was using in the models fuselage. So the actual one I'm building should be slightly more streamlined i also didn't add the engines and landing gear on the model. So far from the fuselage structure you see weighs 120kg including the engines.

  7. There are some excellent texts which are useful for budding designers, are you familiar with Daniel Raymer? He has a book for homebuilders but it is quite elementary. I

    Thanks Alan! Yes i have both Raymer's Books a member of this website 'sain' has sent it to me a while ago and they are very useful! and I've finished reading the 'Simple Aircraft Design For Homebuilders' and got allot from it, I've also picked up that formula i posted from somewhere in that book. I've also gone through some pages of the 'Concept Approach' and it's quite large book so it might take a while to get through it thoroughly.

     

    If your intention is to apply this knowledge to your homebuilt then you need a better understanding of it than a "pilots level'.

    Hey Andrew! I'm great thanks, and yes I'm trying to build on my knowledge as much as possible so i can apply it to my homebuilt, i know two people around my area building an aircraft and one of them is fully experienced and I'll be sure to get them to come and have a look before i call a proper aircraft inspector.

  8. I've been wanting to use this formula to calculate CG:

     

    CG= MAC/6+(3 x Tail Area x Tail Moment Arm/ 8 x Wing Area)

     

    But i'm not sure what value im suppose to use for the MAC. Could the MAC value be the distance from the root chord to the MAC?

     

    Also does any one have any other diffrent methods of working out the CG, my technique i've been using so far was to hoist my aircrft from the spar and see which direction the nose was leaning towards and how much it's leaning. I would then be ok with the weight and balance if it's leaning only slightly forwards about (5 degrees). This also worked well with the scaled model i've made of my aircraft.

     

     

  9. Hey guys, this is something that always get me thinking, I've seen articles that i read about weight and balance, and it said that plane pivots along their central gravity during flight... I thought the central pressure (CP) would act like a falcon on a leaver which is the pivoting point because that's where most of the lift is generated and so the aircraft pretty much get's lifted up from the CP. Anyone care to explain?

    Yea, i'm aware of all the regulation and restrictions for that category my gross weight is 300kg with a 10kg allowance for a recovery chute and my wing loading is 28.3kg/m^2

     

     

  11. Hey Soloman, nice to see you posting again. I think your question has been answered sufficiently so I'll ask you, are you still flying? How's it going? What's happened to your first aircraft build? Are you thinking of building something else?

    Hi Doug, sadly i haven't flown in a while because i cant afford to build an aircraft and take anymore flying lessons, but my scholarship that i had allowed me to get up to my passenger endorsement stage and i have completed that awhile ago and i was about to start my cross country endorsement, but i had to leave it there. Maybe i'll apply for another scholar ship when i'll be able to and complete my full licences. Above from that i had such a great time flying different aircrafts! As for my own plane project i have started rebuilding it a while ago and it's going to look allot different to the old deign, i made lots of improvements on it! It's now going to have a fiberglass body, i got two new engine with a combined power of 26hp and when tuned they can produce up to 60hp! together, my gross weight has doubled to 310kg now compared to the old 150kg gross weight but that doesn't matter because i got over 6 times the amount of power i had, and i also got larger props, and really strong wheels that can support 600kg each, and I've got brakes on all 3 tires including 2 hydrolic brakes on the back tires. So yea things are beginning to get quite exciting for me. I also found and bought a recovery chute that fits my design and hasn't been deployed yet for $375! of ebay but then the Australian post lost it somewhere and i never received it so i got my refund back from the seller who is also building a plane, that's the only disappointment i had. I'm just have to keep my eyes open for another golden opportunity like that again!

  12. Hey guys! Just wondering do the really simple fabric ultralights have a weight balance to stop the flight surfaces such as the elevator from fluttering? or are they spring balance or use tabs to lift up the flight surfaces during flight? Because in plane like Lazair don't really have much on them from what i can see except small tabs, is that what they use to balance the elevators?

  13. Hey guys i sent an inquiry letter to the RAAF and I don't comply with any of their citizen ship requirement for New Zealand citizens. So I've no option but to apply for it when im 18 and wait couple of years if i even get accepted. So i'm not going to waste my time doing that, so i'm reconsidering my choice of joining the air force sadly. I'm now thinking of joining commercial flying through Rex Aviation. Moving back to New Zealand and joining their air force is going to take me away from friends and family for a long period of time with a 12 year service contract, and very little payed leave a year. Not something i'm will to do. So i guess i might join RAAF one day when it all works out. And thank you Everyone for your comments and advice's, i really appreciate it, and it was really helpful!
