1. Thx Pylon. If I do fly in there, I would naturally obtain permission, and I was thinking of contacting the local marina there to arrange a pick up and transport to the mainland.

At this stage it's all hypothetical.

No solid plans. I'm driving up there for Christmas Day and naturally I'm looking for aerodromes for the follow up visit to my brothers new place there

  2. Stick man,Yes Im hearing you, but sometimes you just have to back yourself, once you have made the decission you will find plenty of determination and drive.

Not sure if its still the case but you may be able to complete up to 70 hours on fixed wing then the last 35 on rotary to complete your CPL-H, that gives you some options re going through with the CPL fixed wing if you find there are openings ahead of you, and the training rate on fixed wing is less than doing the full 105 hours on chopper.

Your Rec flying hours may be counted in that , worth looking into.

Schools will tell you that doing the whole 105 rotary will increase your chances of finding a paying job, but its not always so.

One very good school is PHS (Ron Newman and son) in victoria, another is chopperline in QLD which turns out more students mainly aimed at the mustering jobs, if I were to start again it would be with the Newmans, who (may) offer you work at the Ayers Rock Resort flying their R44 and B206 straight out of school, they only employ their own students.

It will cost around $50K to do the whole 105 hours on rotary, but by the time you are half way (private licence@50 Hrs) you will know whether you are going to get a start if you talk to prospective employers and are pro active with your self promotion, your instructor will aim you at who to speak to as its not to early to start talking yourself up while at the flying school.

Whatever you decide the first step (and it should be done first) is a full Com medical.

    Cheers John.

    Thanks again John.

I checked out PHS online and they do sound the way to go. However being in Melb rules it out for me as I have to keep working to be able to afford the training in the first place, so Sydney is really the best option for me.

I,m looking for a school that does their Flight Theory in house and nearly all of them send you up to QLD Advanced Flight Theory. Or there,s a new one in Sydney called Heli Theory Australia. http://www.helitheory.com.au/

I can travel to there in under 2 hrs from home so its probably my only option.

RE my Rec Pilot Cert adding to my hrs is pretty much a definite NO.

Even though the syllabus is the same with out the instrument training or Controlled Airspace they wont look at it.

Anyway I have to wait until after June before I can even do a TIF as we have a long overdue holiday booked (a year ago) to Cairns and my wife has an operation coming up in June so once all of this has settled down I can start moving on some actual lessons.

  3. Hi John, thanks for that great reply. I definitely need some inspiration. I,ve not had the best response around the traps in regards to my age. (the flying schools say "no worries")

I,ve even been considering doing a Fixed Wing CPL. But my real ambition is Heli. But the fixed wing will be a bit cheaper if it all falls over like it did for you.

My wife,s getting a bit nervous too about the whole thing and I have to keep her on the boil or I,m stuffed. lol.

She has every right to be concerned if I cant get a return on out investment promptly.:stupid:

I might be better off investing in a B-Double license, at least I will start earning good money immediately.drive.gif.1181dd90fe7c8032bdf2550324f37d56.gif

  4. G'day everyone. I'm a low 100 hr RAAus Pilot (turning 50 in 2013) looking to make a career in choppers.

I'm currently doing my Homework on the likely hood of being able to secure a job at the end of the course. Any help and advice would be most welcome

  5. Hi again, thanks for posting back. Love old airplanes. I am new to this site... and I've only ever been on 1 other forum - once. So this is new. Would you be the person to ask about certain college courses in Aviation here?

Post your question on the "General Discussions" page as a new thread and you,ll get plenty of answers I,m sure.

And welcome to the forum 098_welcome.gif.81ff07d492568199326e4f64f78d7bc6.gif

  6. An update as to the new aerodrome at Clare in the mid north of South Australia. The strip has been built by a group of local pilots and supporters with minimal help from council, state and federal governments. Our local MLC procurred $153,000 from the Rann govenment our local council has given $50,000 to put towards the infrastructure. We appreciate these donations and the support from the community which has enabled the Clare Valley Flying Group to form and shape the strip for drainage and construction of an earthen sand based strip which is as smooth as the proverbial babies bottom. We have rubbled an area for a hard stand which we hope to bitumise soon and we have sown grasses and clovers along side the strip and in front of the proposed terminal building for parking and tie downs. At the moment the aerodrome looks magnificent with the grasses deep lush green contrasting with the canola's yellow flower.

Visitors are discovering Clare , "The Garden of the North", via the air and enjoying all we have to offer. We still lack infrastructure but Rome wasn't built in a day, burnt in one though, we would love to see you. Details are

1200 meters long by 18 meters wide

    Elevation 1120 feet

    Runway 17-35

Deer and Kangaroos in the area

Ag planes work intermittently from and close by the strip

Dry weather strip ,can be sloppy when wet, however dries within an hour Please ring

Dave this great news for flyers in the region, do you have any photos you can post and how about a street address so that we could have a look with Google Earth (albeit we may not see any aerodrome on it as the GE images can be a bit old, but it gives us a chance to observe the terrain)

Its always good to be able to check out these places as future destinations.

Good luck with everything there, we look forward to hearing a lot more about the progress of the aerodrome. 011_clap.gif.c796ec930025ef6b94efb6b089d30b16.gif

  7. How refreshing is this to hear.Normally we only get to hear of justified whinges because airstrips are being closed by money-grabbing developers and councils with no forward vision.

Congratulations to all concerned who managed to achive this outcome.

Pity they don't have the same success in the Sydney basin.

    Kind Rgds Planey

There is a group (SWAG -Sydney West Airfield Group) working on this situation Driver. Sorry I dont have any contact details available at the moment.Perhaps someone else here can provide such.

  8. Guys just wanted to bump this up, still not doing a lot of flying but what is the status at YKAT now?

Hi Diamond, everything is still in limbo, with the change of State Government this has been deemed a low priority.

Which is hard to make any sort of investment plans for the place.

Rod is still on site but has no aeroplane at the moment for training. His Jab was ground looped and pretty badly damaged and is in the process of being repaired.

The airfield is open for busy as usual. (always phone for an update on the strip conditions and permission before flying in.) 012_thumb_up.gif.cb3bc51429685855e5e23c55d661406e.gif

  9. Looking at the site on Google Earth and looking at the photos of the accident, it would appear that the ferris wheel has been set up about 200 mtrs to the south of the runway in line "with" the the runway! Can see a bum kicking coming on for the organiser of the event. Hope they,re insured.

Just very lucky that no one was killed.

Our best wishes to the pilot and his pax. Also to the peeps on the ferris wheel.

  10. Dug up a bit more background on this one - I had thought, watching the video that he was dropping pretty fast on downwind, putting him in a position of not much airspeed, very little height and possibly not too many options either right where he began his turn onto runway heading.I now read that he had been doing rolls behind the tug and had ended up with slack in the tow rope and deployed the airbrakes right before he released. They remained extended for most of the downwind run, hence the steeper glidepath, not sure if that was intentional but whatever, the nett result was insufficient surplus energy at the base turn and the inevitable bang, much like the classic stall-spin in a botched forced landing. I wonder whether the unusually high ground speed on downwind caught him out?

Good work Spin. Yes he looked to be trying to preserve what little inertia he had left to get himself into the wind and ran out of it.

We had a Supa Cat end up the same way at YKAT a few years ago with very much the same result. The classic turn back to the runway with insufficient height with EFATO.

Actually the tug looks very much like a Super Cat in the vid.

ANY LANDING YOU CAN WALK AWAY FROM IS A GOOD LANDING!

IF THE AIRCRAFT WAS REUSABLE IT WOULD HAVE BEEN AN EXCEPTIONAL LANDING! Is this what they call impact absorbing structure?

  12. Well Guys, Have purchased my second shadow! It was built by Ross Leach from Nerangbah, in Qld and is a beautiful machine. He claimed it was the best appointed in Australia, and I agree wholeheartedly. it was built around 1994, and now has a Jabaroo 2200 motor. i will be uploading both photo's and details to youtube in the near future. Thanks for your time, and Safe Flying, Dave.

Looking forward to seeing those vids Dave.
