I asked him about doing a turbo for a big bore kitted 912 ULS which is a base power of 114hp  turbo would bring it up another 15 or 20hp. He hasnt done one like that.

What I can gather he has done 30 to 40 of the 140hp upgrades

if you want to apply a turbo , the an old  80hp rotax is what you want (9:1) , not a 912ULS (100hp) because the compession is  too high to be useful for the 100hp. (in my opinion)

Yes, 100hp can be turboed but  it involves either  spacers for the cylinders to reduce the compression, or different piston/bore kits.   I mean sure you can turbo with 10.8, but I think I'll leave that one to when I have a full house in the hand and a joker.

what I dont know is if the gearbox is uprated for the 100hp , or is it the same identical gearbox in the 80hp, that might have a bearing.  From what I read in forums is  that essentially, the TBO of the gearbox goes down as you push the friendship with it up.

Looking in the rotax illustrated parts catalog, I could find no difference between 912UL, ULS and the 914 in the propellor gearbox , nor the clutch except there is a different casing for the 914 I think.  certainly recently there was an SI for 914 exhaust valves which of course take a canning with the turbo. https://legacy.rotaxowner.com/si_tb_info/serviceinfo/si-914-030.pdf

Thanks RF I realise I would have to change the compression ratio👍

  3. I have the d/c 10-13.4s and I’ll keep them for pax as they still do the job. Worked well in the Lightwing I had but the Hornet Cub I have now the mic is activating the intercom from engine/ airframe noise when over 5000 rpm ( 912(uls). The intercom which is built into the Icom a220 vhf and I’ve tried all the different settings (mic gain/squelch ect) to no avail and tried the Bose A20 also and same result and that’s why I’m looking at the Zulu 3 with the different mic set up as I still need another headset. I know jack $h/t about avionics so hoping one you tech gurus maybe able to help.

  5. Thanks guys. Oil draining is a painful task. Crawl into the foot well space and balance a shallow basin on the rudder pedals.... Refilling is done through the dipstick tube in the engine bay. It's a 55- registered factory built flying machine, so modifications are not allowed (without CAR 35 certification). Maybe I can drill a hole for the extra outlet, and fit a brass hose fitting secured by a nut on the inside of the new tank. That way it complies with the Rotax directive without modifying the aircraft (or welding anything)

Doug Evans (on this forum)has a 55-GA912 so he maybe able to help. As for draining the oil have you tried releasing the rudder pedal springs and laying the pedals flat on the floor.Clayt

  6. G'day Peter, I got one hose from Repco and the other from a Mackay rubber catalogue (360 pages to find the right one). I wrote the numbers down in the maintenance log but the aircraft has been sold. I just took the hoses with me to town and got the right bends ect and cut them to length. I have not seen one Lightwing Rotax installation the exactly the same so it is not as easy as just ordering one off the shelf. Regards Clayt.

  7. Years ago while driving in the bush, I stopped my van as my passenger and I were convinced we'd seen a UFO in the night sky. We even stopped and took photographs hoping to make a fortune from the press. As it turned out, we got got further down the road and found the local scout group had a bonfire and sheets of newspaper in flames were being carried into the night sky with the heat from the fire.Sometimes things are not always what they seem, and "bugger", we never got a cent for the photo's.

. I can relate to that one Planedriver, about 27 years ago I was in a mustering (cattle) camp 150 km NW of Camooweal and while lying in my swag at about 8.30pm (NT time) looking into the west I could see this light dancing around on the horizon and my first thought was its a minmin light but I kept it to myself (in case I had a touch of the sun) but the same time the next night there it was again. This went on for about 3 nights until I pointed it out to the mustering pilot and he studied it for a bit and advised me it was the evenings star (I felt a fool). It's amazing the optical illusion it gives on the Barkley Tableland horizon at nighttime with a slight breeze blowing. I didn't get a cent either. CV.
