  1. Thanks for all the thoughts.

I've had to perform a few go-arounds due to Kangaroos and Cattle on the strip. It has taken up to 3 low passes to get the blighters to clear off.

If a noisy Aircraft going a few feet over their heads doesn't motivate them, perhaps a horn might not either. I guess it depends on how deaf/dopey/Darwin(award) the creature is.

It's still worth a try though, and I do like the idea of a simple lightweight whistle deployed into the airstream.

Perhaps something like a spring loaded 'Shoo-roo' with several lower (audible) pitches?

I wonder what the engineers among us could come up with?

    Cheers.

  2. Most terribly sorry for any misinformation.

I was merely adding to the story of the recovered practice bombs with my (obviously limited) memory.

I questioned Temora? as the final base. It was in fact Narromine.

My mentioning the book was to encourage further (more accurate) research into a fascinating chapter in OUR history.

As for the Coral Sea, the 618 certainly missed the boat (pun intended). :-)

  3. The 618 Squadron was based in Australia, (Temora?) until the end of the war.

As the above article said, the Highball bomb was designed for large ships. The Japanese Navy had been terrorising the Pacific and the 618 (with their highly modified Mosquitoes) were dispatched here to help.

The battle of the Coral Sea took place before they were able to engage the Japanese Carrier Fleet.

I think the book was called "a most secret Squadron".

  4. Hi Lizzard.

Er... Could be a good reason not to buy oil from a back alley in an industrial area. Never mind. :-)

I suppose we could then think about how long ANY oil sits around before it starts to separate or just 'go stale'. This could be in a shop or a warehouse.

An old friend advised me to store oil and fuel on a wooden shelf where possible. This may be an old wives tale. However, I have noticed that you don't get the same condensation as you do on metal shelving.

    Cheers.

  5. Congratulations John.

In my case, I bought my dream motorcycle near new. As a young man I rode it lots until I found a girl. Time was reallocated and a couple of serious problems developed. One rendered the resale value of said cycle to near zero and the other made me a dad. So my bike went into a farm shed (which later collapsed on it) with the hope that some day.....

I had been squirelling parts away for over ten years until my youngest turned 21. Then, six weeks ago, it started for the first time in 26 years. The bike has been registered for a month and I have travelled over 3000 Km.

People have told me that " it's a long way round to get a classic motorcycle". You know, I think it was worth the wait.

    Happy days.

    Paul.

  6. The dilemma is:- do you vote informal for a clear conscience?

    - or do you vote with information that might(??) be biased?

They say you get the government that you deserve. However I do wonder if we all deserve a little better than opposing arguments.

  7. I was taught that (with my particular aircraft), I should always 'short field take-off'.

Particular attention being paid to air conditions ( wind speed, direction, turbulence, moisture e.t.c.), surface condition (resistance) and Bar position (centred and full-out). As soon as separation between front wheel and terrain occurs to 'nose down' and increase safety speed.

My teacher was aware that I would be almost exclusively using grass strips and warned me heavily about the dangers of moisture. He was aware of a fatality that occured due to the friction between 3 wheels, wet grass and a fence. I am unsure if there was a damp wing involved.

I intend to continue this practice as I am still here, but would love to hear any comments.

  8. I am unsure whether I should comment on this tragedy, however it seems coincidental that this finite event occured at an icon of the Australian Bush.

I can only wonder ( with a certain amount of respect) at the final moments of these heroic aviators lives.

"I'll be home for tea after another fantastic day of flight, but look at the splendour of what we are witnessing".

Although I never met you, Rest In Peace my friends.

  9. Whenever my kids point out that I'm losing hair I deny it.

I claim that I am not losing anything - it is merely subjected to gravity.

Therefore my hair will slowly side down and appear naturally out my ears, nose e.t.c. until ( if I live long enough ) I will look like a Draught Horse.
