  1. Gidday! I had a heart transplant in 2001 and regained my class 2 medical here in Australia a few years later. As you're probably aware your transplanted kidney is likely to be in tip top condition due to close monitoring by the Drs. Aviation risk comes from side effects of anti rejection drugs which cause increased cholesterol, increased blood pressure and long term hardening of artery walls. Being toxic the drugs also impact kidney and lever function. The CASA here are concerned about sudden incapacitation so as long as all the above factors are monitored and controlled a class 2 is achievable with mandatory review every year.

  2. In my opinion, I think that under the Part 149 arrangements CASA will require that the register becomes a public document. End of story.

Chapter 7 of the Manual of Standards for Part 149 which has already been published and adopted by Parliament requires the Raaus and all other self administered aviation organisations aircraft register to be published.

  3. Hi Matty. I really can't advise you as to which way you should go with this as it hasn't been tested as of yet. But if you are so minded not to renew your medical then your GA licence will endure as there would be no grounds under the Reg 269 (b) for CASA to cancel your licence. If you don't want to fly GA then there is no need for a medical and that is not a case of you not having satisfied a requirement.

Bear in mind that the medical requirements will change in due course for both GA and Sport aviation in order to bring into existence a level playing field as opposed to the very unfair system that is in place at the moment.

Trust me it will happen and CASA will be powerless to stop the changes because it will be the Government of the day decision not those that think they can make policy from within a government apointed authority only.

    I hope this helps.

Hi Rick - I don't really want or need to fly GA but Raaus is not a clear winner either.  Polo Flat is 1.2hrs away (Canberra based) and closed.  Goulburn is 1.2hrs away but unfriendly to Raaus (anyone really). At 2.4hrs drive return, a simple flit around Goulburn for 1hr pretty much makes it a full day commitment once you allow time for dragging the plane out, preflight,  paperwork, (lunch somewhere in this mix) fly, land, refuel and put the plane to bed. Maintaining VH gives access to Canberra and a few 150''s or warriors which can be slotted in after work on the way home. Tough decision. An Raaus suitable field near Canberra would be awesome but has been discussed infinitum on this forum so I'm not going any further on that one!!!

  4. Sorry but you are wrong if you don't satisfy the medical CASA can cancel your licence. See CAR 269 (b) in brief, if unable to satisfy a requirement then CASA can cancel licence.

Being unable to satisfy the medical because of a chronic condition which excludes one from exercising fly privledges in my view is sufficient ground for CASA to act and cancel their licence.

OK I see your point.  This is starting to ring alarm bells for me. Do I (as the only heart transplant recipient in aus to hold a full ppl) continue to push for the ppl on an annual basis, risking a medical refusal and potential cancellation of licence, or do I simply not renew so I can be guaranteed to retain the certificate  (currently have both). I'm starting to lean towards the latter.....

  5. If your licence was cancelled, suspended or varied is the wording. I interpret that as being something to do with the licence. The medical is not part of the licence, it is something you have to have to be able to make use of your licence.

No doubt CASA will say it means what they say it means, but as It stands I would say it is a separate issue.

CASA rule writing is hard to understand, mainly where it has "and" in the rule, where it may mean what I think or equally it may mean something else.

I'd agree. It sounds like if you do something stupid in a VH aircraft (low flying etc ) and you loose your licence you must advise any sport aviation organisation you have any other certificate with so they can decide what to do with you. Sounds reasonable to me.

  6. Last Sunday afternoon was a glorious day to go flying at Goulburn but there was no one around. Normally I'd see a half dozen aircraft based at Goulburn airport flying. It could be coincidental but the sign/pole is a likely contributor.

Next to the sign is a pole. On top of the pole is a camera to record the movements so the airport owner can charge aircraft owners using taxiway delta.

The owner of the hangar I rent from did some measurements during the week. I'm not sure that it is much consolation but the claim is the sign/pole is illegal. The sign/pole are within 22 meters from the taxiway center line. I'm told that at a licenced airfield it should be 32 meters.

I left on Sunday, after my flight, thinking about other airport options.

Sorry folks. Pole location as described above appears to comply with aerodrome standards for taxiway clearances.
