Hey Mark....gliding sounds really cool.. will have to do it one day. Quick question though, how do you land and keep the nose straight without using rudder ('nosedragger' and crosswind)?

Videoing my flights and watching them. Sometimes getting an instructor to comment on it.

Depends on the plane but typically I use medium FOV. Narrow is sometimes preferable but the video is very grainy.Hi Rich, what setting do you have on the Gopro lens view?1080 wide seems to cover too much Cockpit so just asking what you use in your videos, thanks -
I recorded a short video answering that question you might find helpful:

Your right. Sorry...I was referring to the Friday.G'day Rich, according to the website, air display times are 1030 to 1700 both days and any aircraft arriving after 0945 may be turned away . -
I'm pretty sure it's closed for practice sessions between 1200 and 1600, so only 4 hours.

Do what the locals do and what is recommended on the website. Park a suburb or two away and catch the train in. The station is about 100m from the entrance. For those thinking about driving to WOI ... Good luck. After going to the Canberra airport open day last year I don't think I will be attending any air show unless I get there by going over the fence at 50 feet AGL.I spent more time in traffic than actually at the airport and I live quite close by -
Only two weeks until Wings over Illawarra: Wings Over Illawarra 2017 - TICKETS ON SALE NOW

Thanks Kununurra. Glad to hear you enjoyed the videos. Plenty more coming. Will be releasing a video soon on my first lesson in a tail-dragger flying out of Camden with a new instructor who is certainly a character! Subscribe if you want to check it out.
I'm actually doing a few endorsements all at once (i try and go flying once a week so its a slow process). I got my RPC a while ago - just took me awhile to make the video so its a little outdated. Ive already done my first cross-country lesson with Bruce, and have started my aerobatics/ tail dragger lessons as well. On top of this, Bruce has moved the Jabiru 170 up to the mother school at the OAKS, which means I'm getting a few lessons from him getting checked out in his main training aircraft - the pipistrel alpha. I've also got to clock up a couple more hours solo time so I can get my passenger endorsement.
As for aerobatics, I did an aerobatic joyflight a few months ago in the Citabria and loved it. Mainly doing it for fun, but no doubt it is making me a better and more confident pilot. First time I did stalls, 2G steep turns and unusual attitudes I was a little scared to be honest...haha. Now, its just second nature and really enjoyable. An introduction to basic aerobatics should be part of the training curriculum in my opinion.

Thanks guys! Really glad you found the videos worthwhile. I initially made them just for myself, to help with my training. I found them really useful that I thought others may benefit from them also. I never set out to be a video maker - but I must say I really enjoy the video-making process these days and connecting with the fantastic flying community.

What an incredible adventure. Looking forward to watching the film.

Good to know other people go through the same process Scotsman. Did my first aerobatic lesson yesterday..... had that doubt again and wasn't sure how I'd go, but it turned out to be heaps fun!

Glad you like the videos Piet. Your not the first person to tell me you use the videos as an instructor resource. I will pass on your thanks to Bruce.Rich, thanks for doing the videos.... I used them in a slightly different way to what I assume you originally intended... I used them as a resource whilst doing my RAAus instructors rating... I found them invaluable for listening to Bruce's sequences, patter and explanations whilst instructing the various elements of the competencies ... It was extremely helpful. Many thanks to you (and Bruce) for the video helpCongrats on the Pilot Certificate.
Stay safe and keep enjoying the privileges and the challenge of flight

One of the reasons I love aviation and flying is that you never stop learning, there is no end game. BTW Nev, thanks for all your comments and feedback along the way! Some of the points you have raised (and others here) have led to some interesting discussions between Bruce and myself. Is I've said previously your Instructor does it nicely and thoroughly. Interesting posts. Calling oneself a pilot? Well you are now legal to fly certain aeroplanes . Whether it's a certificate or a licence doesn't really matter. How you fly is an ongoing thing, depending on a lot of factors. I believe you should never stop learning, and I try to apply it to myself as well. Your attitude as well as your plane's is important. Thanks David. I will be doing my Navs with Bruce and recording them. I don't want to keep 'spamming' the forums here with my videos so best to subscribe to the youtube channel.Well done Rich and congrats...but you haven't finished yet mate...onto your navs now, the final step in your training...I have enjoyed watching your videos and also well done to Bruce...he is a very good instructor from what I have seen in your videos and very patient which goes very well for instructors...anyway good luck on for the rest of your training and I hope you can continue to post some videos of your cross country training aventures once you get started...David.. -
Glad you like the videos mate. Ill pass on your thanks to Bruce :)

Haha... I love the Jabiru too! Fancy it is not though!

Well, as you probably guessed from the title of this post I passed my flight test and can now finally call myself a Pilot!!!
I was really hoping to be able to film the flight test but for various reasons I wasn't able to. Instead, I thought I'd make a brief video sharing my thoughts on the whole student pilot journey:

Hey guys, well this is the 2nd part of my flight review so this is potentially my last lesson before my final flight test! No doubt my instructor will pull a few surprises on me!!

I'm halfway through the 2nd series and it's pretty good. I'd like to watch an extended version... It all jumps from one subject to the next pretty quickly

Hey guys,
I know what a VFR approach point is, but can someone tell me what the use and difference is between a tracking point, check point, and enroute reporting point? Maybe these symbols are for IFR flights? Haven't come across the meaning of these in my training and study.

Glad you like the videos mate. If your flying down to Wollongong then let me know. Might be able to meet up for a chat. As you probably know I fly at Dave's sister school with Bruce.Hi Romeo Juliet Whiskey, I had been watching your youtube videos over the last week and think they are really wonderful and very educational. They are in high quality HD with an excellent sound system. I love watching them in my free time and intend to watch the full series. I was pleasantly surprised and feel privileged having received your response. I just want a cheap set up, hence was looking into using my existing action camera from China along with a Chinese audio recorder, which is similar to the Sony one you have but very basic and generic. I was hoping to catch the cabin sound via the existing headset mic into which we speak, which feeds into the radio anyways. If I do not get the cabin sounds using the radio attachment as expected, then alternately I might just add a 3.5mm splitter to the mic input on the audio device and feed 1 socket of the splitter into the radio and the other socket into the stand alone mic, and see if I can capture both (radio + cabin) sounds onto the audio recorder simultaneously if required. It might save me from having 2 different audio files to synchronize, if this arrangement works! Besides, my action camera has no input for an external microphone.I have not flown for 9 months as I was too busy with work, but will be flying soon once my RAA membership is reactivated. I usually fly out from The Oaks, using the school aircraft from John. It is Dave's flying school, and they have a sister school at Wollongong. Cheers :) -
Hey mate, I made a short video on video and audio recording in the Jabiru:
Do you fly out of Wollongong?

Hey guys, almost at the end of the road with my initial training. I've asked my instructor if I can review everything I have learn't over a couple of lessons before the final flight test. This is the first part of this flight review. If all goes well, I'm one step away from getting me pilots licence!

I love this one. One of the best IMHO. Apologies if it's already been shared:
