  1. Hi folks!

    A tough one here.

Recent events have placed climate change concerns front and centre of the political agenda. As somebody who lives on the land, my observation of recent weather and climatic conditions in the far north has been cause for concern...

Im no greenie, but I recognize the need to be more environmentally aware in our lives, if not for our sakes, then for future generations. And my wife and I have tried hard to translate intent into action. Im not going to list the things we do to try and reduce our environmental impacts, as am sure that most responsibly minded people do likewise...

I guess the most gratuitous emissions we produce are from aviation. This is an unresolved question in our minds. Ive got no idea how emissions from a light aero engine compare with other emissions sources (can somebody here tell me?), but I suspect that as time passes private flying is not only going to be perceived as an expensive luxury but also an environmentally selfish one. For now the focus of Flygskam angst is commercial jet travel which obviously account for the bulk of aviation emissions. But sooner or later somebody is going to pick up on all the little Cessna's, Pipers and Jabirus buzzing around, and the dirty two-strokes screaming behind ultralights. How does flying in a light aircraft compare with emissions per capita/mile in a commercial aircraft? Im assuming even higher.

Personally I'd love to have an electric aircraft. Since all my power is solar, it would be good and cheap to run although Im not sure how useful current models would be for bush flying... The range is a big concern.

But other than putting the plane on bricks, growing a beard, wearing sandals and eating mung beans, is there anything we can actually do to make our passion more environmentally responsible? Gliding?

Has anybody yet given this much thought? I guess its a personal accommodation we each need to make....

My 0360 burns.... let’s say 40 Litres an hour.

I have 9 grandchildren and I don’t feel that I’m destroying their future with the residues of that burnt fuel.

I do feel that if they choose, they may one day be able to enjoy and maybe understand why their grandfather chose to FLY!

  2. With todays turn key mentality and off the shelf aviators,an art to me, seems to be being lost. The days of sitting around a shed and dreaming and designing and BUILDING an aircraft.

"to increase interest and encourage particularly young people to get interested"Maybe that's the problem, shift away from chasing YOUNG & FEMALE prospects, and try to gain a following in the early retirement groups, that has all the money, no mortgage, kids, and some don't even have the ex-spouse to nag them. The first two groups are the opposite of, wealthy, unencumbered, They're without PATIENCE and short of ability too boot.

Of the 16 HummelBird builder's maybe One was below the OLD type, looking for the next challenge,

How many YOUNG or FEMALE go out & buy a "open top sports car" (Ferrari type), event the new millionaires (from the mobile contract area) don't bother chasing their "Bucket List", after all they have it now.

I think there’s probably a lot of activity out there, it’s just done quietly with not that much fanfare.I’m aware of quite a few projects atm around SE Qld.

I’m presently on my 4th and a half project after a long hiatus and all my aircraft have been plansbuilt.86A1BAB1-E819-40EF-B36D-62C0E1E12B7A.jpeg.46021194ebec5a63de150a435bf31172.jpeg

  3. I'm about to embark on a homebuilt low wing aircraft build. At the risk of starting a 'high wing/low wing is the best' debate I'd like to hear from people who fly low wing bubble canopy aircraft in Australia. My aircraft is a French design with a one piece, front hinged bubble canopy and I'd like to know how hot it gets in the cockpit and what are some of the solutions against this eg shades, lots of air etc. There are many bubble-canopied planes and gliders in Australia so I'm thinking it can't be that bad.Mark

Yes, all those solutions and sunscreen.

  4. Hi All,Just wanted to see if anyone knows anything about this project that was for sale recently, and anyones experiences with building a KR-2.

    https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/152829296152

    I built a Kr2s,started in 2003 first flight 2005 sold it 2008.

It was my third aircraft project.

Lovely flying plane. Fast,120 kts responsive and easy to fly.

    Now finishing a Thorp T18.

Go to YouTube and look for West Australian Kr 2s video by the guy who bought it from me.

    Cheers

  5. Hi new to this forum.

Am considering a return to recreational flying after a 9 year spell.

Previously I had built and flown 3.5 aircraft

    Evans Vp-2 (VH-XNX) -19-3742

    Teenie Too 19-3392

    Rand Kr2-s 19-4318

    Corby Starlet was the .5

Im keen to know of the whereabouts of my firstborn

Vp-2 last known position Childers Qld where I delivered it to its new owner on 4/10/2004.

The Teenie is still at YCAB.

And the Kr wound up in WA.

The aviation mistress is calling me again, and it's hard to fight. Kids are grown, and I still have a set of Minicab plans stowed away.

  6. Hi all new to this forum.

Considering a return to recreational flying after a spell of nine years.

In years past I had built and flown

    An Evans Vp-2 (VH-XNX) 19-3742

    A Teenie Too 19-3392

    A Rand Kr2s 19-4318

The lure of the aviation mistress seems to be calling me again now that I am in my 50's and children have grown.

I would love to know the whereabouts of my first born Evans Vp-2 first flight 18/4/96.YCAB.

Last flight by me 4/10/2004 YCAB-YCHI (Childers)

    Anyone knows of its status.

    Would love to hear.

Currently looking at my old Minicab plans
