  1. Aviation incident, Whitsunday Island

    QPS Media on Jan 28, 2016 @ 7:13pm

A 25-year-old woman has been airlifted to Mackay Hospital with neck injuries following the heavy landing of a sea plane off Whitsunday Island.

Preliminary investigations suggest around 3.30pm, a sea plane was conducting a routine landing into Chance Bay when it struck rough water.

The plane bounced before landing heavily, coming to a stop on the beach and colliding with some vegetation.

There were seven women and four men on board the plane as passengers – all aged in their twenties and thirties.

Apart from the woman airlifted to Mackay, no one else on board was injured and they have now returned to Hamilton Island.

The Whitsunday Water Police attended the scene to render assistance.

The plane poses no navigational or environmental hazard and it is expected to be retrieved tomorrow.

At this stage, it appears likely that no further investigation by the Queensland Police Service will be necessary

  2. My understanding of the new manufacturing techniques in both pre-preg glass and carbon filament winding makes me think it is possible to make it structurally sound, and priced competitively, however it cannot be pursued further without market interest making it worthwhile. At this point, approx 400 people have responded. It needs a lot more feedback. So please share with all your friends here and overseas, so we can get an accurate result. Thank you everyone for the discussion, it has been extremely helpful and hopefully we can get another Australian manufactured aircraft back in the air.

  3. Hi David,

Currently the Sapphire is classed as LSA. It would be easier to get it back in the air using it's existing COA.

The Ultrabat distributorship was actually up for sale a while ago. I am not sure if it still is. I think the market for a pure aerobatic aircraft would be smaller, although if promoted perhaps a one make competition could be created.. I would assume all current Ultrabats are VH registered as RA-Aus doesn't allow aerobatics.

Columnist Ben Visser always finds the most interesting things online. He sent us these photos of a holiday display which features Santa, Rudolph and a US Air Force jet, which is in St. Michaels in Maryland. Internet buzz is that the folks who own the property always have eye-catching displays celebrating various holidays through the year… this year they have certainly outdone themselves! Notice the pilot’s name below the window…
