  1. Hi Blueadventures - I have some concerns about, what I consider, to be your Jab/parochial view.

Don't get me wrong I am an admirer of the Jab fleet BUT your view of what is possible at both ends of the flight envelope is just incorrect.

There are RAA aircraft that can demonstrate a stall of 28 knots and a cruise of 135 knots (75% power/18L/h), same day, same engine, same load conditions,

    Out curiosity - aircraft model?

  2. Gull wing doors

Gull wing still may not be able to be opened either. That said, the Liberty XL2 which has gull wing doors, also has a small hammer that comes free .... provided you buy a plane.

I also noted that you can access the hinges (quick release pins) from inside the aircraft with the aid of a Phillips head screw driver To remove a cover, so I suspect it may be possible to eject the whole door in some circumstances and avoid the need to hack your way out with the emergency hammer.

the only negative is that the fuel tank is inside the fuselage aka a Europa so i don’t think you want to spend too much time in there inverted

  3. Clear tape you can write on and which does not damage the map when it comes off? Where do you get that?

I like to use ozrunways as well as a map. most of the time, you just have to keep the blue plane near the pink line on the display... and I reckon a smart guy could set it up so that you got a reminder when a radio call was required. Since I'm not smart, I like the idea of marking the map.

AvPlan and I assume OzRunways allows you to ‘draw’ on your map (annotate) so you can combine “old skool“ with your EFB.

I draw on things like radio calls and L / R hand ccts. Under settings, select annotate and then you can draw, erase etc.

  4. Latest update states that you can take off and land within regional VIC (as opposed to just Mitchell Shire), but its still a bit ambiguous as recreation does not meet the 4 reasons to leave home? Like most, I'll just read the part that I like, Yes I can fly in regional VIC...just need to work out my route to the airport :-)

    https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/travel-regional-victoria-covid-19#can-i-fly-a-plane-for-recreation-or-take-a-flying-lesson

From 11:59pm, 5 August 2020 if you live in regional Victoria, Stage 3 Stay at Home restrictions apply.

Under the new restrictions there are only four reasons that you can leave home:

    • to shop for food and essential goods or services
    • to provide care, for compassionate reasons or to seek medical treatment
    • to exercise
    • for work or study, if you can’t do it from home
Can I fly a plane for recreation or take a flying lesson?
Yes. Flying for recreation is allowed but only with one other person, or members of your household. If flying with someone who is not from your household, you must be able to maintain a physical distance of 1.5 metres from that other person and you and your passenger or instructor must wear a face covering. You should only depart or land at airports within regional Victoria. Recreational flying and flying lessons are not permitted within metropolitan Melbourne.
You can also fly for practice, with a flying instructor or a member of your household.

  5. Monduran Aero Club Insurance Scheme - you have to join the club but it will save you heaps!

    [email protected]

The broker was really helpful and honest. Appears that my current insurance probably compares quite well to the local deal for Monduran club members anyway, although I was not able to take advantage of it regardless as you need to hangar within 100Nm unfortunately.

if I was local, I suspect I would have insured via them.

  6. I looked at the Wang Acft, but at 6’2” and 105kg found it a bit cramped. Never flew it.

I purchased a Liberty XL2` for not much more and it is better with respect to ergonomics and avionics and I think flies beautifully.

still interested in the glider version of the Europa but as said, I’m a bit tall and bit wide :-)

  7. The stupid thing about these conspiracy theories is that these ppl look for all these little ‘potential‘ discrepancies but fail to acknowledge the elephant in the room, that there were literally thousands of ppl all watching it unfold real time, and not just on TV. There is NOTHING REMOTELY SENSIBLE about the conspiracy theories.

Has anyone ever tried to accomplish something even remotely complex? It never works as planned. In the Army we would say the strategic plan only gets you to the point of crossing the line of departure. After that you will be reacting to what ever was thrown at you and playing it by ear all the way to the objective.

if the planes that EVERYONE saw hit the building did not bring it down, then what did? Explosives rigged in the basement? ...oh hang on, anyone watching this saw that the top floors imploded and then the weight of that collapse cascade down the building. I was watching a news anchor talk about blah blah, and on the screen behind them you got to see the building start to implode. It was amazing and crazy knowing there were still people inside.

the most amazing thing is that the somewhat basic plan by the terrorist actually worked on any level, from taking control of the aircraft, to actually hitting the building to having it collapse.

  8. If in doubt ……..pay with PayPal !

You have a guarantee that you will get your money back if the goods aren't delivered or are not what they are advertised.

Most shifty sites don't have PayPal...…..there's your answer!

Same same. If a site does not offer PayPal, I won’t use the site. They know that PayPal will refund the money so I suspect they avoid letting the user pay via PayPal

  9. Hopefully it's only temporary, so not a long term battery issue. the app will only activate BlueTooth when it pairs with someone in close proximity, which will only be when you go into town and stand next to someone or the Shell tanker guy arrives and you offer him morning tea, or the Elders guy shows up and wants you to sign something etc. it only activates when you've contacted an infected person.

While the west of the State is quiet, you can't see the asymptomatic cases, which could be a nurse coming home to Penshurst exhausted after a month's emergency work. Also SA had a scare a month ago when a single group of tourists infected Mount Gamber, Tantanoola, Penola Coonawarra and Bordertown. Fortunately all those people survived hospital and the South East seems clear.

You can't see asymptomatic; one nurse had worked several shifts in a nursing home asymptomatic, and 12 people have died so far with potentially more to come. The Covidsafe app, if available and downloaded at the time may have triggered before any of the inmates were infected.

For the BT to pickup another phone, it has to be searching ALL OF THE TIME. If BT is off, it will never pickup proximity. So the App would need to be running with BT searching and then pairing with a phone within 1.5m for x minutes. Hence I expect this will impact battery life. If it doesn't, then they should sell that code because it will be worth a small fortune.

  10. I prefer AvPlan, but OzRWYS not bad either.

I have used it portrait and landscape, but tend to prefer landscape. I'm not flying at 250kts so plenty of time to see far enough ahead to be useful and I prefer the data ribbon orientation across the top. Plus it just fits the available real estate better in landscape.

I also use a RAM mount. They are fantastic. I use one in my truck with a suction cup, but the one in the plane is bolted to the panel.

  11. That's a good visualisation. Australia's 2019 cancer deaths added up to 49,640, so if you visualise the cancer deaths among your friends and relative, Corona virus is predicted to be about the same.

Statistics record you dying of what caused you to die, so even if you have been given just six months to live and die in a car crash in seven months the cause of death is a car crash.

I ran some figures based on 80,000 deaths (which was based on the Deputy CHO 50,000 < 100,000 plus comments by the Victorian CMO this weekend, plus the fact that we are not on lockdown to produce this very approximate visualisation.

There are still huge variables: to come, so this is just based on the situation now.

....Although, the 50,000 cancer deaths are spread across a population of 24M odd, not across your nearest and dearest. I personally have no direct relationship (friend or family) with anyone that has died from cancer (that I am aware of), in recent times. Had plenty of friends and family die, but cancer was not identified as the culprit although most certainly could have been there, ready to take them had they not crashed their bike (as an example). I had 1 mate die of cancer at age 32 thereabouts.

I am somewhat pragmatic and don’t believe we need to save everyone at any cost.

I also think the current result could have been achieved with far less economic pain than has been done had government reacted swiftly and targeted the actual problem, ie the imported virus. As an island, we had a perfect opportunity to close borders and ENFORCE quarantine. Instead of using precision guided munitions, we chose to allow ppl to ‘self isolate’ and we carpet bombed the entire country with draconian restrictions which in the most part did very little, apart from cause significant collateral damage to our economy. This is not with the benefit of hindsight either, I was saying that when this was first identified as a threat and I am sure plenty of others saw the same opportunity squandered.

  12. Now is not the time for playing politics.

As it happens, I have the numbers because I'm working onsomething else.

    National Cabinet

    Prime Minister: LNP

    Qld Premier: Labor

    NSW Premier: LNP

    Victorian Premier: Labor

    Tasmanian Premier: LNP

    South Australian Premier: LNP

    Western Australian Premier: Labor

    ACT Chief Minister: Labor

    NT Chief Minister: Labor

    Labor - 5

    LNP - 4

It's working well because there's a good bipartisan balance.

There's not much chance of any Right Wing agendas coming out of that, or Left.

The Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Paul Kelly has announced they are expecting a best case of 50,000 deaths and worst case of 150,000 deaths

In two or three weeks time when the parents and grandparents start to go, the mood of the Australian people will be such that I wouldn't want to be any Australian politician who strays from the path of doing everything he/she can to save lives, support people out of work, and bring the financial recovery as forward as fast as possible.

50,000 deaths. That suggests more ppl will die from cancer. Mind you, if you were dying from cancer but catch COVID19, they will count you as a virus death rather than the cancer that was going to get you anyway.

  13. You point out the problems , fine, but how is VFR , IFR ? .100% on instruments is not VFR. No horizon means you need a substitute for the horizon for determination of aircraft attitude.. The Artificial Horizon was introduced with the concept of ATTITUDE Instrument flying skjlls being taught. Most of them toppled when pitch and bank limits were exceeded. IF you did Aeros you CAGED the gyro instruments before doing them so they would not damage themselves. Nev

Instrument FLIGHT RULES - IFR really doesn’t have anything to do with having a visible horizon. It’s all about the rules. NVFR is visual FLIGHT RULES despite you being 100% on instruments for various portions of the flight such as take off and when in cruise without a visible horizon. In the circuit you are visible for the turn to final, but can be on instruments for other portions of the circuit when you might not be able to see the RWY lights. You fly a heading, altitude and attitude. That’s when VFR may be incorrectly referred to as IFR as opposed to being VFR on instruments.

  14. the premise being both are lifting surfaces (tail/wing) ... isn’t that what is behind canards, specifically the Quickie or Dragonfly. Both surfaces lift and as a consequence you have less drag and imo, a much smoother flight in turbulent air (through thermals).

so we already do this...and it works

  15. Funny how in the USA you get your Private and it allows you to fly day and night. Doesn't seem to be much of a problem.

I am NVFR, and have flown country NVFR - it’s different and training should be mandatory as is the case. You literally are flying in the Abyss and are 100% on instruments with no horizon and minimal if any artificial light. Flying near cities or large towns is akin to VFR, but Australia has lots of nothingness- trg is good as is the biennial reqt

  16. Very busy airspace around Mangalore, especially to the east. Grim outcome. Always very sad.. Nev

I’m based at Club Mang and it really is only busy at times. Quite often (mostly) I find myself as the only acft in the circuit.

the school seems to fly in waves so there is often a flurry of activity as they take off or return, then nada again.

generally most (students) seem pretty good at ensuring separation.

tragic event possibly made worse if they were both IFR and unaware of their proximity to one another. Normally I hear ATC (FIA) advising IFR of other IFR and general info re VFR above the CCT. These two may have been on different freq at this point. I operate both freq in the CCT, but IFR seem pretty good on calling on both freq

  17. Don’t know the figures, but having flown a Bristell, I would say I’m not surprised if a student broke the occasional plane.  They look great and fly pretty good, but they are sensitive and I think a student might struggle at times.  I fly a Liberty XL2 and can draw a similar comparison.

I’m always perplexed by the number of incidents as the plane is really easy to fly, warns you well ahead of time if you are trying to kill yourself via a stall, yet ppl stall and crash them on landing.  I suspect because they are also quite light on the controls.

  18. Hypothetical and potentially stupid question, however, should the MTOW be lift to say 750kg.(or higher), does that mean that aircraft that are presently certified and require a LAME to complete the 100hrly will be able to be serviced by the pilot, should they feel confident to do so?

In order to meet registration criteria, I am also assuming that other aspects such as stall speeds etc are still met.

it just seems counter intuitive that an aircraft that cannot for instance be transferred to the Experimental Register ATM will suddenly be allowed to be transferred to the RAA register and thus introduce more freedoms (and maybe some more restrictions on where it can fly etc).  I assume that the owner will still need to comply with any SB or AD that are issued for the aircraft, it’s just how they are complied with that will effectively change (ie LAME, L2, pilot?). Is that a correct assumption?

so an aircraft like a Cessna C150 with SIDS requirements etc can be owned, maintained and flown by the pilot with an RAA rego? Sounds neat and a wee bit more affordable.

  19. You can do your own maintenance and 100 hourly with GA experimental. You have to have built the aircraft and do a maintenance procedures course. The fact you bought it from someone else and that I t is already mostly built doesn’t completely remove possibility of getting approval to do your own maintenance. I have heard of cases where people have got the aircraft and essentially pulled it completely apart again and inspected all the parts and then rebuilt it. They did this under guidance of their AP (right from the start) so they knew what they were doing wasn’t a waste of time. Not saying it’s an absolute it will be ok but might be worth persuing with your AP.

Interesting. I once looked into rebuilding part of an aircraft (its wings in my case) to achieve that outcome but even that was considered iffy at the time so i did not proceed, but I would be surprised if a dissasembly would truly qualify under the rules, although if possible I'd be keen! May need to have a chat with an AP :-)

  20. After holding both the RA-Aus Pilot certificate and a PPL and having the aircraft in RA, I have ended up having the aircraft in GA Experimental and dropping the RA Pilot certificate. I was not going to pay for a membership every year just to hold the certificate and complete a BFR when I do not fly RA aircraft. GA Experimental Registration have given me more feedoms and did open up airfields to which I had no access to in RA. I no-longer pay any registration fees for the aircraft and my Licence is not dependent on paying a yearly membership fee, like RA pilot certificate is.Just my 2 cents worth

Do you pay someone to do your 100hrly? That was the only negative of teh EXP rego that I could see
