Plan/share your trips and waypoints on Google Earth and web maps

It's been almost 6 months since the first release of the planOfile trip sharing interface to Google Earth.

The updated version looks and works similar to the first version but I've made it easier to install, improved the server interaction, added permissions, improved trip planning, fixed some bugs (added some bugs).

The purpose of the system is to allow you to plan your flight/trip on Google Earth and optionally share it with others privately or publically.

By sharing trip information, trip collaboration, like event organisation/coordination can be done more easily.

I have made a number of flash tutorials to show how to use the program. These should make it easier to learn how to use the program.

I expect the release the new version shortly after Easter, when I get the tutorials finished.

Let me know if you have any problems/suggestions with the tutorials.

Cheers,

Peter

Put trips and maps on your own web site

I forgot to mention that you can embed the map on your own web site (or page) and show the trips there.

The two trips generated in the tutorials were

http://planofile.com/map.html?pOfId=d1c0c911-bcd1-d157-ab97-abe1c946fddf

and

http://planofile.com/map.html?pOfId=c11f0311-bcd1-f421-a71e-f82ed851828e

By default they go to the main planOfile.com site, but if you have the map on your own site, like we do at srfc.org.au, you can generate URLs to show the trips on your site.

At SRFC we have our expeditions page

http://srfc.org.au/web/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=18&Itemid=37

where, by default, we show a list of the club's trips. But on this same page I can show the two trips generated in the tutorial by generating the trip links as:

http://srfc.org.au/web/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=18&Itemid=37&pOfId=d1c0c911-bcd1-d157-ab97-abe1c946fddf

and

http://srfc.org.au/web/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=18&Itemid=37&pOfId=c11f0311-bcd1-f421-a71e-f82ed851828e

Cheers

New Release

I have now made the new release available. It can be downloaded from

http://planofile.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=14&Itemid=53

Tutorials are at

http://planofile.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=category&sectionid=5&id=29&Itemid=52

Last year's RedBull Sydney-Perth return trip in the Jab is installed as default data. You can use this to get some experience using the program. It's worth a look to see where (and when) we went.

The Avalon 2007 associated trip plans are on the server and the tutorial shows you how to download them so you can view them on Google Earth.

For the moment, just do the simple trip creation shown in the tutorials. It is quite easy to create a trip, save it to the server and then email the link to your friends (if you want to keep the trip private) or post to a web site (if you want to make your trip public).

I'll put up some more tutorials next week to show how to organize events, how to add your trip to someone else's event and other collaborative features.

Let me know if you have any problems.

Cheers,

Peter
