Someone gave me several volumes "Aircraft of the Fighting Powers"  1944 1945 and 1946. Incredible pictures of some not so well known aircraft. The Westland Whirlwind was a beauty hampered by engine development.

This aircraft however was listed as the fastest prop aircraft of the war at 485mph. Single seat I've rarely seen such a lovely design. The high aspect ratio wings also a feature. westland.thumb.jpg.e3fccc60a6543ce5cccfe85bcdef0d1a.jpg

GWH, where did you get that Max speed figure from?, it was nowhere near as fast as that

P.S. Are you perhaps confusing it with the vaguely similar looking De havilland Hornet that they reckoned could do 475mph

That was published in the book. The Hornet was not mentioned!  "1945 Aircraft of the fighting powers"

I know Wikipedia is often wrong in detail, but the profiles in the Aircraft/Warbirds section, based on Wiki, list maximum speeds as

Welkin           385 mph (620 km/h, 335 kn) at 26000 ft (7900 m)

Whirlwind      360 mph (580 km/h, 310 kn) at 15,000 ft (4,600 m)

Yes you are quite right. THe number I had read I confused with the Hornet.  It was the similarity to the Hornet and the beautiful design that caught my attention
