Is there an idiots guide available on the internet that details maintenance tasks to be carried out on the Jabiru at 25/50/100 hour intervals? PM me your email address and I will send you a copy of what I now use for my SP6T Jab. I suggest that you check that the correct consumables are listed as the ones on the charts are for the 6 cyl. The nearest thing I found was an inspection chart that is not fit for use as a regular guide/checklist for maintenance, it is an inspection chart as it says on the top. I took the inspection chart and modified it drastically. I now have three lists one each for 50, 100 & 200 hrs, with additional notes on the 200 hr list for things like u/c bolts at 500 hrs. My lists also include items such as "Change oil" giving oil type and volume, "change filter" giving filter type, etc and these are on the correct interval list. What I now do is simply grab a copy of the list approriate to the interval and work through it step by step. I don't think any such list is on the Jab site. Derby Posted September 1, 2009 Share Posted September 1, 2009 Hi,Qwerty. You forgot the 25 hour maintenance on the engine, my j400 has to have the valve lash checked every 25 hours and oil. It is high praise indeed, not in the relm of Lightwing but praise nevertheless. As to service intervals the Jab manual is quoted below: "6.2 Periodic Checks After the initial 25 hours, check in accordance with para. 6.3. After 50 hours of operation, check in accordance with para. 6.4 & thereafter after each 50 hours of operation. After 100 hours of operation, check in accordance with para. 6.5 and thereafter after each 100 hours of operation. At TBO, overhaul in accordance with para. 6.7. 6.3 Check After Initial 25 Hours Details of specific operations are shown in Chapter 7 "Maintenance". • Remove engine cowlings, check engine mounts. • Thoroughly check engine for missing or loose bolts, nuts, pins, etc., & for abrasions. • Check induction and exhaust flange for loose bolts. • Check safety wires, cooling air ducts & baffles, ignition wiring & hose connections. • Oil Change 3.5 litres (normal aviation oil) • Change oil filter. • Prop check bolt torque. • Prop check – bolt tension • Inspect old filter. • Retorque cylinder head bolts (20 ft lbs) in diagonal pattern • Check tappet clearance and adjust as necessary (refer Para 7.8). So... at 25 hrs you do Para 6.3 work then at 50 hrs you "check in accordance with para. 6.4 & thereafter after each 50 hours of operation" Now para 6.4 says do the work in para 6.3 PLUS do the oil filter. The key words here are "& thereafter after each 50 hours of operation". There is no 25 hourly service. Bugger this, I'm calling Jamie. I'll get back to you. Here it is again more susinctly from the Hyd lifter engine manual. 5.2 Periodic Checks • After the initial 10 hours, check in accordance with section 5.3. • After the initial 25 hours, check in accordance with section 5.4. • After 50 hours of operation, check in accordance with section 5.5 & thereafter after each 50 hours of operation. • After 100 hours of operation, check in accordance with section 5.6 and thereafter after It it clear that maintenance is carried out "thereafter after each 50 hours of operation".... ie 50 hourly. If radial clearance exceeds 0.5mm (0.020"), repair carburettor. The overhaul work must be carried out to Jabiru specifications at an approved aeronautical service facility or by an approved Jabiru Service Centre. If necessary, changes to the TBO Limit due to operational experience, will be announced. 6.1 Lubrication System Oil Change, Oil Filter Change, Visual Check for Leaks. * Drain the oil while engine is still warm. * Change the oil filter at 100 hour inspection. * Fill with oil. Capacity is 3.5 litres (3.69 US Quarts), check oil level with dipstick screwed right in before removing to check. * Check oil level. The MAX mark must not be exceeded. * Use only registered brand oils meeting the specification detailed in Para. 2.5. This is for a solid lifter engine. The manual that came with my J400 kit. On my reading of the manual is is clear and unambiguous that the interval is 50 hrs for oil and filter. There was a comment that it should be 25 hrs.I am trying to clear this matter up. It seems plain to me: 1. do the listed work at the INITIAL 25 hr point. 2. at 50 hrs and at every 50 hrs thereafter do the listed work (as for the INITIAL 25 rh service) plus a filter. What have I missed?? I am an engineer, I have extensive experience dealing with specifications, the Jab manual seems clear to me. If I have misinterpreted the manual I would like to know how and where. I will take a lot of convinceing to change the oil at 50 hrs. What I am interested in is the actual recommendation from Jabiru, the apparent ambiguity in the manual and practice.
