  1. My wife, who pays the bills around here, was expecting a paper invoice to turn up for my RAAus renewal. She says that they are legally bound to send one if you ask for it.

We are sure that nothing ever arrived by mail, but I did get an email notification that my membership had expired.

Does anybody know who is right here?

I have had a similar thing happen to me today. My 2019 remewal was due 7/8/19 and was paid 9/8/19. Today I received a notice that my 2020 renewal has expired. (9/6/20). By my calculations should not be due for another 2 months. I have not received any prior notice that is pending, just an SMS to say it has expired. I will be calling RAA in the morning to sort it.

  2. It beats me why the two Mikes want to transform RAA into something it was never meant to be. Supposedly we now have a membership of 13,000 - surely that is enough to be able to operate successfully without adding old spam can aircraft to our register. This will add a complexity to all aircraft on the RAA register beginning with all aircraft over 600 kgs having to be LAME maintained. Just watch - that will filter down given time, management’s mantra is that they do not care about increasing the cost of aviation to recreational aircraft (after all - we have to support maintenance engineers apparently) We have lost our identity and been screwed over from within on any number of fronts since the arrival of Monke and Co and the subsequent inception of the LTD liability Company we are burdened with now. It has been reported that Monke has just purchased a GA registered aircraft - what hope has RAA of maintaining its identity if the Chairman (and some board members) prefer to support GA flying.

  3. So why did Tony King suddenly resign?. Two months ago Michael Monke was asking in his column if it was time for him to go hinting at a group within the board wanted him gone due to his non consultative ways. Tony King fronted the Senate hearing representing RAA with Spencer Ferrier the architect of the “Ltd liability company” that we have have now. (Described as having a “fractured dynamic”.)

All of a sudden Tony King is out of favour and has resigned - there must be a story behind this - was he pushed?.

  4. Wasn’t there a reference in the Sport Pilot before last in Monke’s column about four directors in opposition to his actions and he asked the readers if it was time for him to GO, inviting readers to comment?. No reference to it in this month’s mag tho.

  5. ApenNameAndThatA.     I have been reading this thread with interest watching the various pieces of wisdom being passed on to you by long time pilots so you hopefully learn something, but you mentioned crossed controls decending on final and no one has picked up on this , so in the interest of your safety- listen up - to do this would to say the least very foolhardy to the point it could be catistrophic. There have been many aircraft stalled at low level or turning on final through not flying in a “balanced state”. The best thing you could do to reaquant yourself with your previously learned knowledge of flying would be to do some lessons in an actual aircraft with a competent instructor. Without practical demonstration of principals all the conjecture amounts to nothing. Good luck.

  6. Re the Jabiru - it is covered in the construction manual (available on the Jabiru web site), they recommend a slight amout of toe in as this will tend to straighten at max gross weight. A slight amount of toe in is better than toe out as has been already been pointed out. This is achieved by rotating a bevelled washer on the axle attach point. Cheers.

  7. Recreational Flying works for me. I liked the bias toward aircraft under 600 kg as that is where my interest lies, although I also enjoy the “antique” genre’.  Call the site what you like Ian but I do know my visits to it recently have waned since the rename to Aircraft Pilots as I don’t believe that the GA influence that has crept into RAA has bought anything of value to ultralighters, just financial pain and increased scrutiny.

I viewed this site as a voice for those with RAA interests and you clearly wish to expand your horizons which of course is your perogative. You would be aware PPrune has got GA covered.

  8. Turbo’s Safety Management System is why - every Flying School now has to have one. So whats proposed is a pyramid system where an over arching Flight Training organisation big enough to have the resources to afford the SMS, and Office manager (to keep up with all the BS paperwork and compliance issues) who sees to it that satelite schools preach to the ever increasing standards being imposed by those above. I’ts a system where flying schools do the work for RAA head office.

There are changes similar to this going on in the GA training regime as we speak, I know of two who have decided not to continue to operate because of it. We are being screwed in every direction and are expected to like it.

  9. Aus Airventure looks about the size of any number of Aero Club flyins held in the country throughout the year. The turnout must be a massive disappointment to RAA and the organisers. My take on it is that the attendance at Airventure is a byproduct of M & M turning the organisation upside down and allienating the rest of the recreational flying world recently in an effort to impose themselves wanting to take over all recreational flying. It just stinks!.

  10. Most of the video clips of this aircraft's flight are followed by inane comments relating to the engines, their heat output, and the effects of insect ingestion. What a lots of ignorant put downs!I see this as an example of experimental aviation at its best. The prototype flew with two 2-Stroke engines driving propellers, and most made since are prop-driven. The 2-stroke engines weigh about 17 kg each. The turbojets weigh 4.37 kg each. The ICE powered aircraft cruise around 90 - 100 kts. During the videoed flight the pilot claims a top speed of around 140 kts, so the cruise could easily be 120 kts. The fuel burn ranges from 4.25 oz/min to 22 oz/min at full power. Let's say that fuel burn is about 15 fl.oz/min in cruise. That's 0.44 litres per minute, or 26.4 litres/hr.

    Colomban Cri-cri - Wikipedia

PBS - Aerospace - TJ 20 Turbojet Engine

Notice that the aircraft in the video is Australian. The owner comes from Leeming in W.A. Can Any of you Sandgropers identify the airfield the video was recorded at?

OME - The pilot identifies the airfield as Serpentine in his radio call prior to taxiing to the runway.

  11. I agree. My understanding of what I heard and have read is that a condition for increase to 760kg is that lame's will not lose work opportunity and that is guaranteed with the rule that all above 600kg will still need to be maintained as they are now by lame and not by RAA L2, L4's etc. Cheers

The answer is simple - leave them on the VH register and give their pilots driver standard medicals (as is their wish) and leave RAA in charge of RAA registered aircraft up to 600kg. Providing work for LAME’s is not part of our charter or responsibility.

The idea that we should take over all recreational aircraft or perish is complete and utter B/S. M&M should lower their focus and look after the current members so called rights and privileges. Stop employing extra staff for B/S positions and IT upgrades to cater for a group of people who are not yet members (and may never wish to be).

It’s costing the present members dearely to continue on this path.

  12. As for maintaining the current L1, how is someone with limited training and aviation experience going to maintain his 6oo kg supercharged, intercooled, retractable, constant speed aircraft - omce these aircraft entered RAA's orbit it was going to change.

I don’t see why, 600 kg aircraft have been being maintained by their owners (perahps with help where required) for the last decade. All’s well a long as manufacturers recommendations are followed. No need for added regulations.

  13. You missed the endless posts and gripes, and the drop in attendances?

I think they have achieved much more than keeping the guilty away - attendance numbers (or lack thereof) would suggest that any flyin where RAA had influence has been declining for some years. Even including every other Sport Flying organisation hasn’t shielded them from their declining reputation amongst recreational fliers.

  14. And then a circus comes to town, you’re standing outside the bakery when around the corner comes the liw loader with the elephant on it. Old Mavis does what she always does; steps off the kerb and turns her head away from the traffic bluffing them to stop, the truck driver hits the air, and the elephant shoots across and squashes you. Random audits work very well, not the least for keeping the guilty away as they did for Natfly, but also for gauging the depth of the problem. Prior to RBT, 50% of deceased drivers had a large amount of alcohol in their blood. It would provide a foundation for flyers if the same results could be provided to them.

Turbs - please explain your statement “Random audits work very well, not the least for keeping the guilty away as they did for Natfly”.

  15. I’m interested in how many planes flew in for the event and what the make up of those present were ? Ie SAAA, GA, RAA, Other. RAA execs will exagerate the numbers so I would like an unbiased opinion from someone who was there to know if the money was well spent.

  16. An engine idling at 1000rpm with a three blade prop has 50 prop blades passing per second. A bit hard to avoid that. But if the plane was taxying at 10kts (5.1 m/s) and the person was walking toward it at 5 kilometres per hour (1.4 m/s) then at the combined 6.5 m/s they might be in the 200mm wide blade arc for only 0.03 seconds and the chance of being hit is then greatly reduced.

Won’t be trying this anytime soon.

  17. The chickens are coming home to roost, and as a result RAA would now have officially the worst reputation amongst all of Australia’s flying organisations. This blatant push by Monke will be seen by others for the power grab that it is.

AOPA can’t be blamed for wanting to maintain their members.

Shame on Monke for his push for “the new GA”.

RAA needs to revert back to just having a “point of difference” to attract people who want to fly aircraft up to 600 kgs and should leave the older GA type aircraft to VH registration and CASA licensing (medicals or not).

Having a board full of ex (and current) GA pilots is not in the best interests of the members who joined RAA to fly ultralight aircraft up to 600kgs in a more relaxed regime. 8000 members joined knowing what the rules were - not where we are heading now. We are all fools to continue putting up what is being perpetrated recently.

  18. Thank you GraemeK and KP. I tried copying the title of the email, but wasn't able to for some reason.

Couldn't agree more. I think Darren would enjoy not having to go to the Office, and would probably prefer to work from home and consult on a few things for RAAus.

Does any one know if Lea Vesic is the Safety guy who attended the PDPs? If so, he seemed pretty switched on. If not, what happened to him?

Darren worked from home anyway as I understand it.

  19. Was a number of them (board members - now ex board members) who extolled the virtues on here of a Limited Liability Company set up saying it was for “good governance”.

I wonder if they all think the same now given the “secret society approach”. The two M’s had an autocratic style of management in mind - nothing to do with good governance, just about being able to plough on through with the CASA wishlist agenda without any membership input or wise council from anybody. They really don’t care what the shareholders think. It’s obvious that the whole reason for the constitutional changes was to enable them to behave like this.

  20. August email released from Linke and STILL no information re the Tech Manager position. This is beyond belief, what is it they are trying to conceal - pretend nothing happened maybe??

It makes you wonder what the circumstances of his departure were etc. Did he depart on good terms?.
