Thanks Nunans, unfortunately 200mm is way too big for a Sonex.. and it has a tendancy for tail heaviness so I have to be a bit careful of what I hang off the back

Hey Old Koreelah, where did you source your wheelchair type wheel and what size is it? I have been looking online for a 120-125mm to no avail..

Loved that MEK as a cleaner, started using it when they stopped us from using trichloroethane to wash carparts.. er aircraft components

 

 

It is for aluminium, it has an acidic component to etch the material. That said I have left it in my aluminium pot spraygun for weeks, no real probelms with eating the pot out (looks a bit grainy though)

 

I believe the zinc oxide forms part of a sacrificial barrier in the presence of moisture.

 

Time will tell if it will do the job, certainly better than bare metal on bare metal with dust/crud in between.

 

Spare bare 6061 channel I have in the shed is suffering from filiform corrosion just from dust accumulation, whereas the dusty primed scrap parts have none.

 

My main reason for using it was that alodine and other hexavalent compounds are too hazardous to the body and environment, especially trying to dispose of it safely.

 

 

Super etch is Zinc Oxide based

 

Alodine is not inert, it pretty nasty stuff. mainly the Chromic acid, I understand it should not be just tipped on the ground as it can easily contaminate ground water. One of the disposal recommendations I read has it mixed in cement to lock it up

 

 

I used Wattyl super etch as well, but for cleaning and preparing I used Prekote applied with scotchbrite pads as per instructions.

 

Works great on 6061 (Sonex airframe) Non toxic but use gloves and eye protection.

 

I found out recently that I am allergic to Chromium compounds - via leather workboots of all things.. just as well I never used any of the more traditional metthods!

Re Sonex tank.. rotationally molded polyethelene

 

Its about 1/8 -3/16" thick, pretty tuff stuff... but one has to be careful with the moulded in tank fittings, if they are overtorqued they will leak (pulls the fitting out of the plastic)

From the Sonex website "Findbuilders" page ( http://builder.sonexaircraft.com/cgi-bin/search.pl )

 

There are 4 Sonex, 1 Xenos and 1 Onex under construction in WA. A fifth one isn't in the database belonging to Richard Ewing of Perth. Unfortunately there are no email address details for the builders.

 

The owner name and suburb/town are listed so you might be able to track them down. I don't recall there being any WA based projects on the Sonexaus site

Interesting but pricey! A bit of backyard engineering with a small esky, 12 v fan(s) and some flexible downpipe fittings.. one might be able to come up with a workable unit.

PS I understood a terminal fitting to different to a thimble fitting

 

 

Only affects fttings that scew into a turnbuckle barrel... not your thimble swages, might eliminate a lot of aircraft you are concerned about. However always pays to check any fitting before flight!

 

All other aircraft at the 100 hourly or annually, which should be done anyway if you're on top of your maintenance
