No but quality stainless, and you should be able to get a lot of use out of it if you set it up right..... and........you'll be able to actually see any cracks if and when they happen................................................................024_cool.gif.7a88a3168ebd868f5549631161e2b369.gif

    The stainless way is the wrong way to go on a trike.

    I have that T shirt. Exhaust cracked in under 60 hours and had to replace,

     

    Airborne had many come backs on the stainless exhausts cracking, fortunately mine was replaced under warranty.

     

    The original exhaust was a stainless one and ceramic coated.

     

     

  2. HelloDoes any body know of a product for removing the brown waxy deposits from the inside of plastic trike fuel tank? I have the tank off and was considering steam cleaning if i cant find any thing more suitable?

    Hi Gary,

    Polypropolene or Polyetheline, both are solvent resistant so MEK or Acetone can be used to degrease it.

     

    The problem is with both that the plastic yellows with age and there is nothing you can do about that

  3. Ray that report was well worth posting here. Tragic accident. The thought put in to procedures for saving the situation has been well put together.Killing the engine may not be thought of soon enough to avoid a catastrophe, like that brand new airbus that was written off before its delivery flight.

    In a reply to that report it states that a pilot was almost killed in South Africa.

    In fact a pilot in another incident was killed in SA a few years ago.

     

    He was a low hour pilot and had landed with other pilots at a car show on a race track(if I remember correctly).

     

    Members of the public had fiddled with the trike and had pulled the friction throttle back.

     

    After numerous attempts to start, the pilot eventually had someone pull start the trike, the engine roared into life with the trike rotating and collided with the first floor of a hostel building. The pilot did not survive.

     

    It was due to this happening that my students are taught to always release the bungy on the control bar before starting.

     

     

  4. Well how do all the council,CALM,Station strips get away with it.White crosses, hmm, what if you damage your aeroplane at your own strip, your in hospital, the assesor see's white crosses that would = no payout I would imagine.

  5. You are probably approaching this from the wrong end of the stick. You would set up your strip and publish it in AOPA or similar on web but make it abundantly clear that Prior Permission is Required (PPR). When intending users call you for permission, you ensure that they fill out the appropriate disclaimer that also confirms that they are also appropriately insured. They would then fax the permission form to you for approval.I know of half a dozen strips with this set-up, such as Wineries and other privately owned strips.

    What about a permanent white X at either end of the runway. Your expected guests would then know about it and any one else landing would be doing so at their own risk at an un serviceable airfield?

     

     

  6. Hi Tomo,

     

    That only applies if you have the runway insight. Obviously if you are 3 miles out you would not know the situation at the airfield.Think back to your training days, on very short finals, the instructor is talking you through your landing or talking you out of a pear shaped situation, someone transmits and you cannot hear your instructor. Could be critical. If at a training airfield you have them in sight and broadcast, I would then look at it as poor airmanship (please don't shoot me down! :-) )

  8. I was fortunate in being able to participate in the Airshow at Nelson Bay yesterday.

     

    I flew into Williamstown Airport in my XT:thumb_up: @ 09:30 for a briefing and then at 12:00 onto the Air Show.

     

    Unfortunately the weather was a shocker and the rotor coming off the hills at 13:00

     

    caused me to shorten my display sequence.

     

    I was scheduled for a 10 minute display but after 5 minutes called it off and flew back to Somersby.

     

    Lots of interest was generated with our static display at the D'Aborra Marina and many people attending had never seen a trike.

    Thanks for your remarks on the pannier bags.

     

    We flew to Tumut from Somersby last Thursday (2 x 912XT with Streak wings) and compared temps all the way because of the panniers.We had identical readings. It was a tough trip with headwinds of 30 & 40 Kts after Goulburn. A 3.5 hour trip took 5.5 hours:sad: We had an excellent weekend;)

We have had two trike accidents/incidents in 24 hours, one at Albion Park and one float Trike at Rose Bay.The purpose of these threads is for pilots to learn from these incidents/accidents and yet there are no comments or suggestions as to the causes of these unfortunate happenings. The purpose is certainly, not to lay blame on any person, or to gloat over the happenings.We are trying by discussion to minimise and eliminate any further incidents that could happen to other pilots in similar incidents.

     

     

  11. It is always good to buy new. If buying second hand you need to make very sure of history etc.

     

    Trikes are registered for 5 years in Australia with no need for an "approved person" to inspect until renewal. (In South Africa they had to be inspected every 100 hours or annualy which ever came first and a school trike every 25 hours)

     

    I hope I am allowed to say that my XT912 is advertised for sale in the for sale forum.

     

    I would however strongly recomend that you do some training first with an instructor before commiting your self to purchasing any trike.

  12. Suprisingly I've not yet seen or had anyone puke in a trike, despite the many dozens of times I've taken up relatives and friends. When asked, I have advised them to puke to the left when flying the 582 as I'd rather have steaming puke on the exhaust rather than cold puke clogging up the airfilter. Now with the 912 perhaps I'd better tell them to puke to the right to avoid contaminating the oil reserviour.Puking straight ahead will result in a near aerobatic landing on the nearest postage stamp followed by immediate evacuation by the pilot.

    The answer is to get them to puke into their flight suit:yuk: especially if they are a student in the front seat with you instructing from the rear seat:yuk: (have not had it happen yet thank goodness)

     

     

  13. We also have a Fuel-Mizer flow meter on an Edge-X 582 trike and have found that it always indicates about 10% greater fuel flow than reality. This is probably a good thing as the low fuel alarm goes off earlier and gives you more warning. Other than that it's been a great gadget to have on board.We've also recently taken delivery of an XT-912 which has a fuel flow meter built into the glass dash, though it does not appear to be nearly as accurate as the Fuel Mizer. I've read a report from another XT-912 Cruze pilot that a reading of 5.5 L/hr is really 9 L/hr and in my XT-912 with the Streak-III wing I get 6.5 L/hr reading is really 11L/hr.

    I've already mentioned to the co-owner that I would not go planning any flights to East Timor based on the XT's flow meter readings.

    Hi Glen,

     

    I have the same problem on my XT912

     

    I posted the problem on the microlighters.co.za egroup and the reply was : check that the jet on the inlet side of the fuel flow meter is all the way home.

     

    To do this disconect the inlet pipe to the meter and use the back of a drill bit to press the jet in.

     

    I tried this today, did not feel any movement in the jet,but it could have moved fractionally.

     

    Will try checking accumulated fuel used tomorrow or Saturday to see if there is an improvement:blush:

     

     

  14. Brent - just contacted the distributor and he advises that the 220 is the same as the 710 - not certified for use in Australia as yet.They also have to be approved for use in Australia by the Australian Communications and Media Authority and also CASA.

     

    So I rang them today and found out some more interesting info.

     

    Firstly, when you get your radio endorsement this only allows you to use a radio that is fitted in your aircraft and that you are NOT allowed to transmit on a hand held transceiver that is not attached to an aircraft - hmmm, very interesting. This means that I am not allowed to use my Vertex 210 (even though it is an approved transceiver) at the airport talking to the pilot in an aircraft in the air.

     

    Every thing that transmits is required to be approved by the ACMA and if it is capable of transmitting on an aviation frequency then the unit has to also be approved by CASA.

     

    The standard fine is $10,000 and they the ACMA are very active out there with their receiving vans tracking down illegal broadcasters - so they informed me.

     

    Talk about government bureaucracy :confused:

    So if you have a student doing his first solo or solo consolidation, you must sit in an aircraft and talk him through the landings etc. if neccesary .
