  1. I was working through some practice exams for my rapidly approaching cross-country exam tonight, and I noticed that it said "Reference Material - None" on the front, and then proceeded to ask questions that couldn't be answered without extra material. For example, how are you going to work out EOD & LMT questions without the AIP tables, and planning questions without maps?

What reference material are you allowed to use, or is everything necessary provided?

p.s. are there any other sources of practice exams apart from those that come with text books?

  2. Hi. Here's a simple question that should be answered easily (but not by me 049_sad.gif.af5e5c0993af131d9c5bfe880fbbc2a0.gif).

I heard an Air Services safety bloke say "A lot of pilots say 'Cancel SARWATCH' when they mean 'Cancel SARTIME', and they are completely different things". Unfortunately, I didn't ask him at the time what the difference was. I've looked though AIP and ERSA, both of which describe HOW to ask for the two different things, but neither of which say what the different effects are. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks.

  3. One other thing that worked for me is to make sure that, whenever presented with an acronym or code word, I pronounced the word/phrase in full in my mind. Hence, AoA is never read as Ay-Oh-Ay, but as Angle of Attack. There's sooooo many buzz words that I found it really easy to get lost unless I worked that way. That may help.

p.s. Even the best text book writers forget that us newbies are, umm, new, occasionally. I found this little beauty in my cross country text last night. After explaining the first part of a SIGMET in detail, he concludes with "From there, the message is straightforward." The 'straightforward' part of the message was:

HVY DS OBS AND FCST WI YBHI-TOOM-YLEC BLW A050 MOV SE 20KT NC

I'd hate to see an obfuscated version... 031_loopy.gif.e6c12871a67563904dadc7a0d20945bf.gif

  4. What a day! I think I'm grinning more than when I got my cert. Nothing big really, just an exercise Nav I planned inside my 25nm radius, but so much fun!

Warnervale, up to my sisters house in Newcastle, Catherine Hill Bay, Barrenjoey, over a mate's place at Bar Point and back home. When I was planning, I used Google Earth to find the Lat and Lon of her & my mate's houses and used that to work out the headings. No GPS, just good old map and compass the whole way. I couldn't recognise her suburb so I just turned when my watch said I should be over her place. Looked at the GPS trace on Google Earth tonight and I turned 800m from her place. Barrenjoey and Broken Bay looked fantastic. Talk about stoked! 011_clap.gif.c796ec930025ef6b94efb6b089d30b16.gif

  5. Alternatively you can borrow, for no reward to the owner, any aircraft & fly it with the owner probably only suggesting you'd better put the fuel in the tank.Cheers

Ah, but the trick is to find such a kind individual, isn't it? :) I guess that's the nub of the problem. Is there a directory somewhere (sorted by location) of a/c that may be accessible for periods longer than a day, or is it just a case of who you know? (I will be discussing this with my CFI, but as the school is a single a/c operation, I'm sure that it's not an option).

  6. Apologies if this is a dumb question or if it's been discussed before, but is it possible to hire for the purposes of touring, or is touring limited to those who own their own plane? I mean, I can understand that the schools need to keep their plans available for lessons, but are there any less utilised planes that can be hired?

  7. Thanks Darky & Slarti.

Could I have three - "Frequent Flyer", "Defy Gravity - Fly" and "Look down on your friends - Go Flying", all with user name.

I expect that the last one is too long to fit on one line without squashing up too much, but maybe the "Go Flying" could be on a second line, right justified. If it looks like it isn't going to work well then just tell me and we'll find something else. Thanks again.

  8. A few more suggestions

Had a bit of a brainstorm with my smarter half. How about

    • Rise above it all... Fly

    • Look down on your friends - Fly (I like that one 006_laugh.gif.0f7b82c13a0ec29502c5fb56c616f069.gif)

    • Rise to the challenge - Fly

She also suggested that Jet propelled or Wind Assisted would be appropriate for me, but that's just being cruel 051_crying.gif.fe5d15edcc60afab3cc76b2638e7acf3.gif

I haven't made my mind up yet, but there'll be a couple to add to the order some time soon.

  9. Hi. I've been lurking for a while, but the thought of getting a bumper sticker has brought me out in the open.

I got my certificate at the beginning of December, and have been working towards the cross country & passenger endos since then. What started as a birthday present is rapidly taking over my life. I keep thinking that if I cleaned out the garage then perhaps there's enough room for a little building project??
